Wednesday evening about six o'clock
James Beckley shot aud killed Henry
Leven?, the ball striking him in the
face or forehead, killing him instantly.
The encounter grew out of a quarrel
caused by the deceased corralling stock
belonging to Beckley. The deceased
used abusive language towards Beck
ley, and put his hand in his pocket as
if intending to draw a weapon, when
Beckley drew a derringer and fired.
The deceased was a young man, about
twenty-seven or twenty eight years old,
lately married. He was raised in this
county. lie leaves a wife, a number
of brother! and Ohe sister, besides a
large number of relatives residiug in
this county. Mr. Beckley is a young
man, near the age of the deceased, is a
brother of Hon. Henry Beckley of this
county, and )s married and has sever.il
small children. Mr. Beckley came U
Roseburg and surrendered hfmself to
Sheriff Purdom. A warrant has since
been issued from the justice's court at
Elkton, where a preliminary trial is
now in progress.

Professor E. B. McElroy, State Superin

us last Wednesday, lie was here particu
larly in the interest f the District institute,
which will be held at Eugene City on
Toesday, May st, ad continue until Fri
day, May 4th. The Institute promises to be
very interesting, as the attendance will be
large from Lane and Benton counties and
from the adjoining district. Our teachers
