The Democratic tidal vav whicL
swept orer the country last fall, con-
tinuea to grow in favor with th peo
pie, as ia manifested by their votes at
the recent-lcca! elections held in Ne
"VrtvV Ohim Illinois, where tbe
Democracy have again been victorious,
New York shews large Democratic
gains throughout, while in Ohio and
Illinois, in almost every city where a
contest was made on party issues, the
Democracy have gained complete victo
ries. I
a Chicago they elected a mayor
majority of the aldermen. In
and a maion
Cleveland the mayor and eighteen out
of twenty-one oi toe aiuermen.

"victories on tbe future of that doomed
party, endeavor by lengthy editorials,
in which .they pervert and mystify the
facts to1 create the lrnpressiod that
these signal victories are attributable
to local causes and have no political
significance. The fact, however, re.
mains that the people of these great
agricultural sections have become tired
of being robbed under the semblance of
law to enrich the few bloated aristo I
crats who know but little and care
nothing for their prosperity, further
than it serves to enrich their already I
overloaded coffers. Would it not be
just as well for the futura of their j
party and far more honorable to them-J
lelvei to onenlv admit the truth and
confess that the people have grown
tired of' waiting for the reforms which
they have promised but never fulfilled,
and thas their defeat is chai gable, di

the imbecility of a corrupt administra

vaults of the treasury the gold and
silver coin which belongs to the people
as their ciiculating medium.
Tpaiff for Eevanue.
The right of taxation is founded up
on tbe necessity of a revenue to main
tain the government and to be just
must be equal and uniform. Taxation
for any other purpose is antagonistic
to the spirit and genius of our govern
ment, and must, in the very nature of
things, operate uiiequally and unjustly.
When the advocates of a protective
tariff claim it to be a local question,
they admit the fallaciousness of the
theory upon which It is founded and
the danger to the peace and safety ef
the commonwealth in pursuing a policy
calculated to excite sectional strifes and
prejudices. When one section of a
vast country like ours, by legislative
enactment, is made to pay tribute to
another section, it in time become
burdensome and oppressive and the
people will sooner or later insist upon
their equal rights.
Taxation which has for its object
and practical workings the building up
of the few at the expense of the mny,
cannot longer exist without breediug
discontents which are dangerous to our
civil institutions and the peace and
safety ef the country itself.
The Democratic party is essentially
the party of the people and new, as it
ever has, looks with jealousy upon
any encroachments upon their rights.
Let tbe Republicans try as they will
to dodge this issue, the Democratic
National Convention will see to it that
a tariff for revenue only will be made
a prominent issue, and that no candi
date jiot in harmony with this princi
ple oi right and justice will receive a
place upon the ticket.

charge during the aession of the last
Legislature. It does look! as thoagh
ike Republicans have intentionally
iodged this issue by failing to have the
proposed ameadment properly entered
in the House journal. It will not do
for tnis party, which arrogates to itself
all the wisdom and intelligence in the
land, to claim that they did not know
aew to pass the amendment Most
arely they have proven themselves
fraud on the liquor question in Oregon.
Perhaps they , are trying te carry the
-wnisky on one shoulder and the wate
