Republican Governor defeated. Both
parties claim the State. Returns in

WISCONSIN.

make sure the election of five Repub
licans and four Democratic Congress

the 9th inst, says: "Victory is ours,
we have carried everything."
THE EESULT.
The result of the elections on last
Tuesday surprised even the most ardent
Democrat. The vote of New York
and Pennsylvania was expected of
course no one anticipated such an
overwhelming majority but when the
tidal wave swept the whole Union
from New Hampshire to California :t
demonstrated that the people at last
had determined to assert their rights.
The Republicans attribute their defeat
fo Stalwartism and confidently predict
that now the "bosses" have been de
feated the true Republican party will
regain its ascendancy and again con
trol the government. They also pre
dict that the Democrats, having the
control of congress, will make such
mistakes as to give a Republican vic
tory in 1884. They are welcome to
all the consolation that this view of
the question affords them. It may be
admitted that the victory in New York
and Pennsylvania may be due to the
divisions in the Republican parly, but
the general uprising of the people
throughout the whole , United States
indicates that the7 people have deter
mined to relegate the whole Republican
party to private life, that the corrup
tion, the oppression of the high tariff,
the overwhelming power of corpora
tions fostered by that party must be
put an end to, and to accomplish this
work the government must be placed
in the hacds of the Democratic par
ty. Let us thank God that our day
of deliverance has come.
THE EflD OF rim W0BLD.
Mr. Richard Proctor, the noted as
tronomer, though not an astrolegist,
predicts that the end of the world is at
hand.: He is confident the comet which
recently astonished the universe by its
untimely appearance, the one so loved
of lovers last year, is now rapidly ap
proaching the Bun, and will disappear
in that body next year. The conse
quence of such a catastrophe can only
be surmised, bus as Mr. Proctor has
been recently married the second time
he is inclined to take a gloomy view of
the situation, and predicts the. end of
the world.
It is not worth while worrying, says
the Courier-Journal, over this predic
tion; the comet is beyond the jurisdic
tion of the planet ea-th, and is no more
responsible than an independent voter
in Ohio. No one can by taking thought
prevent the occurrence, so it should be
treated philosophically. While most of
us would cousent to u postponement of
the matter, it will, after all, relieve us
of many perplexities, solve many doubts
and settle many vexed questions. If
assurance can be given that Mr. Proc
tor is correct in his prognostications,
the nation escapes any action on. the
report of the tariff commission; the
manufacturers need not prepare for a
reduction of subsidies and dividends;
the Presidential contest of 1884, the
preliminary canvass, the conventions,
the ratification meetings, the tamper
ing with the -returns allthi, to which
wo are now looking forward with more
or loss anxiety, is avoided, and we will
admit tLat it is a blessed dispensation
As to the one hundred thousand
officeholders, haunted by Jay Ilubbel
eD one side and the fear of Democratic
ascendancy on the other, they should
hail Proctor's edict as a new proclama
mation of emancipation. No more a
sessment circulars; no mora threats
from headquarters; no more warnings
from George William Curtis! It is a
veritable millennium, well worth any
thing it costs.
To the frightened anti-monopolists
it is a perfect godsend. In this way
the diabolical Jay Gould eanbs thwart.
ed and punished. He cannot buy up
any more railroads, he cannot consoli
date any more telegraph companies, he
will not be able to throttle tho press,
and his schemes to orm an alliance
witn V anderbilt, overthrow vhe govern

ment at Washington and enslave fifty
millions of human beings must come
to naught
This, too, is a happy solution of the
temperance questio it will matter lit
tle after next year whether liquor is
sold ou Sunday or not The crops will
not disturb speculators; individuals
hopelessly in debt see a short way out;
convict- sentenced for life complete
their sentence; insurance companies
will not be expected to pay any claims;
many of the hollow pretenses of socie
ty will avoid exposure, and the matri
monial aid associations may escape a
complete collapse if the comet moves
rapidly.
AYhile all this is cheerful enough
and makes one feel that, the year 18S3
is to be a real year of jubilee, the end
of tho world in 1883 must indefinitely
postpone the election of a Democratic
President. This is a view calculated
to depress the most cheerful optimist
Everything now points to a Democratic
triumph in 1884, tut, as usual, some
unforeseen accident occurs to dash the

tor must be in league, and the reckless
ness of Radical leaders during the lute
session of Congress indicates that they

event. A Democratic victory in" 1884
means a purification of Ihfs civil service,
a reconstruction of the American ship
ping, a reduction of all forms of taxa
tion, radical improvements in the pos
tal service, a return' to the practices of
thefathei-3 of the Republic, and he who
can contemplate the destruction of such
high hopes with any feelings than those
of deep distress must be devoid of all
feelings of patriotism. Besides, the outs
have been out so long, hope has so of
ten been postponed, that another dis.
appointment, caused not by natural,
but by supernatural, causes is apt to
shake the faith of the multitude in the
ultimate triumph of virtue.
Giving due weight to all such objec
tons, the good effects of the end of the
world overshadow all partisan consid
erations. The party must be sacrfiiced
to the good of mankind. A Democrat
ic victory would inaugurate a glorious
reformation. Yet perhaps all that the
party could accomplish under the most
favorable circumstances will be more
rapidly and thorouhly done by a fire
which will purify, if it does not con
sume, the entire planet
