Sheriff and the newly elected County
Treasurer were practicing with the

rently reported that neither the Depu

Accidental Shootixg. On Sunday
evening, just! after the atal affray on
ur streets, the news came to town
that a son of William Alexander had
been shot by a playmate. Dr. Bun
nell, who was at once summoned,
found that the boy was seriously in
jured, but that the wound was not
necessarily fatal.' He was shot through
tL left fore-arm, the bullet pissing
through the body near the lung, nnd
close to the shoulder blade. The doc
tor set the arm and the little fellow,
aged about nine, is doing well. The
report that he tad been Bhot by a pkv
mate, however, proved false. Mr. Al
exander had returned home from one
of the tunnels, and a large Colt's re
volver which he had taken with hitn
he layed upon a shelf over the door.
In the evening the revolver, in some
way, was jarred off the shelf, and on
striking' the floor was discharged, with
.the result stated. The wounded boy
is said by the neighbors about the
grove, where he resides, to be an amia
ble little fellow, and that he hears the
pjn of his injuries with remarkable
fortitude.
The Old Sage Company. On last
Saturday, as the Overland stage left
Roseburg, the' Sdrer Comet band gave
it a seienade, and it was intended that
the last stage on Sunday would be
honored in the same way, but on ac
count of the fatal occurrence ef that
yening, it was dispensed with. On
h 14th day of August, 1859, the
Overland Stage Company's coaches first
arrived at what, at that time, was the
very small viitage of Roseburg. The
arrival of these ceac .es was the open
ing of a new em in the history of the
southern portion of the State. Before
that time the only means of locomotion
was on horss or rnule or with ox-teams,
or pack-trains for freight Now, after
twsnty-three years, we bid farewell t
js good and faithful servant, who has
Loan superceded by j the railroad.
While we hail : the change that will in
a short time conuoct us i by rail with
Ahe Eastern stated, and which we hope
will bring us population and wealth,
we cannot witness the departure ef the
old line without the deep regret that
must follow the loss of an old and well
tried friendC Through storm and sun
shine, over mountain trails, through
black mud and high water, the eld
company never, failed, except when it
was impossible to do otherwise, during
all these long years, to bring as the
news from abroad and to advance the
interests of this portion of the State.
It was the precursor of the railroad,
and now that the time has arrived to
give way to its successor, it only re
mains for us to express the many obli
gations we have been under to the old
OBipany, and to Vid it farewell.

thing which he is quite capable of do
ing. He has and will keep on baud a
variety of beer, including the San Fran
cisco National, Portland Gambrinus,
and John Rast's Roseb rg beer. Those
of our citizens who have visited San
Francisco and indulged in a glass of
Na ional pronounce it extraordinary
beer. The Gambrinus is considered ex
cellent, a d who does not know ivhat
Roseburg beer is? The Ked Front is iu
a good location, and is to be tastefully
fitted up. Jimmy, no doubt, will do a
good business.
A FATAL AFFRAY.
On last Sunday evening, as T. S.
Roadman, Esq., was walking up Jack
son street leading his little child by the
hand, he was met near the Express of
fice by A. J. Downen, who, after a few
words, struck him a blow which knock
ed him off the sidewalk. ; Downen fol
lowed him into the street and struck
him twice, when they clinched; then
Mr. Roadman drew a Smith & Wes
son seven-sbooter and fired a number
of shots, one of which entered the
mouth of Mr, Downen and lodged in
the back of his neck, from which
wound he died on Tuesday about noon.
An inquest was held by Esquire A. R.
Flint, acting as Coroner, and the jury
returned a verdict of justifiable hoini-

Mr. A. J. Downen was buried on
Thursday by the Odd Fellows, of which
order he was a member, a large attend
ance of citizens "being present at the

On yesterday Mr. T. S. Roadman
was under examination uion a charge
of murder, filed by E. G Hursh, E?q.,
Prosecuting Attorney. A the time uf

gress. Personal. -Hyman Abraham, of
Oakland, called to see us this week and
is looking well. He has disposed of
his residence in Oakland to James R.
Dodge, and is going to move with his
family to Portland . to educate his chil
dren. He has resided iu this county
boy and man, for about thirty years,
and by thrift, economy and industry
has succeeded in accumulating much
of this world's goods, and the esteem
and good opinion entertained for him
by the people of this county and the
immediate vicinity where he resides was
manifest by their votes at the last
election. The county, ' which r went
over 150 Republican, gave him a. Dem
ocratic majority of 199. Oakland pre
cinct, where he has rastded and done
business for many years, with a vote
of 290, gave him a majority of 160.
Whilst we are sorry to loose him from
our county and sincerely hope he may
soon return to live awongus, he has our
best wishes for succt-ss in his new home
Our loss is Portland's gain. We con.
gratulate our old friend, J ames R.
Dodge, on the fine residence he has ob
tained by this new purchase. He is
one of our oldest and most industrious
and prosperous citizens, and can well
afford to enjoy the luxury of this tine
mansion in hia declining years.
The Railroad. On Monday the
terminus of the O. & C. railroad was
changed from Roseburg to Myrtle
Creek. Roseburg has been the termi
nus since Is ovember, 1872, receiving
somt advantages thereby, and now
many doleful predictions are made
about the future of this city. We
have no fears oo this subject. Rose-
Turg. as the county-seat f Douglas
county, with its accumulated capital
stored therein, its wholesale stores, its
warehouses and its central position,
must command the same business it
always held, with the increase that
will follow with the completion of the
railroad to Sacramento. Should a road
be built to the coast, as it will be at nd
distant day, this city ill be the centre
of trade for Southern Oregon. Pos
sessing all the elements of vitality it
can never be dead if it does sleep.
Myrtle Creek. On last Tuesday
we accepted an invitation to visit Myr
tie Creek on a freight train, and had a
very pleasant trip. The road is bal
lasted a short distance beyond the
Mountain House. The grade is easy
and the road appears to be substantial
ly constructed. The accommodations
for passengers have not yet b".en pro
vided, and it is somewhat awkward for
a passenger who arrived at 8:30 in the
dark, to ge half a mile to tlfe hotel to
be informed that there are no teds to
be, disposed of. The employees of the
company do everything in their power
to make the situation as agreeable as
possible, and provision will no doubt
soon be made for the passenger traffic,
which is every day increasing. .

George W. Jones, the Granger, came
into town this week, carrying a two-gal
lon lemijohn to the express office. The
reporter of the Independent, who hap
pened to be present, looked wistfully
at the jug, whereupon the Granger
aforesaid generously offered the report
er a drink, which he incontinently ac
cepted. The local is now ready to
swear that it is a good temperance, bev
erage; tastes very much like a dose of
salts. That there are medicinal quali
ties in the water we know from expe
rience. What the qualities of the wa
ter may prove to be, we will soon
know, as the water has been sent below
to be analyzed.

merit the approval of the reading pub
lic. People are glad to see that it is
the organ of no faction, the mouth
piece of no clique, the advocate of no
job, and tho apologist for no wrong.
It seeks no official patronage; it pa s
court to no personal influence; it does
the service of no ambitious aspirant; it
is the tool of no 'power; -nd it is the
instrument of no intrigue. As long as
it is an exponent of the greatideas and
doctrines of the Democratic party, and
advocates a pure, simple and honest
government, it will receive the hearty
support of the. people. Verbena.
We had the pleasure of meeting this
week an old typo, Mr. Ii. S. Glossop,
who has a case on the Oregonian. Mr.
Glossop, like all good printers, is a ge
