MRS. 31 15 TO FRR' EXT
"One moment, Cliarles
gotlen something!" cried
-I have for
pretty Mrs.
Minton, darting from the side of her
young hatband, as he stood in the hall,
valise in hand, about to start for a week's
travel. i
, Upon reaching her room, she seized
a bottle from a drawer in a bureau, and
then, as her face lit with a smile at a
happy thought, she seated herself and
wrote a few lines upon a sheet of paper,
which she placed in the bottle above
the powder it contained. Itecorking it,
she again rushed to her husband, and
said ,
"It is time you paid attention to that
cold of yours. It is becoming chronic
catarrh. This may be a patent medi
cine, but everybody recommends it, and
I bought it for you yesterday. Now you
will use it. Won't yon? The directions
are within."
"Certainly, love certainly. Thanks!
Good-by!" !
Giving his wife a hurried but ardent
embrace, Mr. Minton put the bottle m
ms overcoat pocket and departed.
"The silly darling!" he smilingly mur
mured, as he turned the corner of the
street. "If I should cut myself shaving,
she'd wish to send for a surgeon: and
now I'm loaded with a bottle because I
sneezed at breakfast. I must rid myself
of the incumbrance at once.
As he thus communed with himself,
advancing rapidly, he struck his valise
against the legs of a gentleman before
mm, and raising his head to apologize,
saw an aged neighbor. f
"Ah. Mr. Jobson. beer pardon! Am in
a hurry to catch the train." (
"lltm. ug hi its ugn! no conse
quence."
"That's a bad couch of yours. I think
I've something that will help you
Highly recommended. Take it." ;
The old centleman mechanically; ex
tended his hand, and as he received ! the
bottle, Mr. Minton bowed and passed
on. The gut was scrutinized with
doubt fnl sneer. f
"Ugh! um! ha! So Minton has gone
into the quack medicine business, had
he? I m too old a bird to be caught with
chaff. He shan't poison me with drugs.
I ll stop it right here. Stop? No ugh!
um! ba! I'll give it to my housekeeper;
she believes in sucu stun.
Mr. Jobson pocketed the bottle, and
slowly shuffled toward his home. His
honsekec-per-was profuse in her thanks
as she was presented with the "perfect
cure. I
"I'm sure I'm much obleeged to j ye,
Hor! It's the very thing for me sister's
co igh. Has it made yer own betther,
sorV" . 1
"I experience relief from it," said Mr.
Jobson, with a cynical smile, "at this
moment. f
lm expectin me sister tins very
niormn . We are both so much bleeged
to ve ! ' i
But the housekeeper's sister proved,
on urrivttl, to have well-nigh recovered
from her trouble, and was averse to try
ing a new remedy. Being, however, a
provident person, she accepted the gift,
saying that it would be a good thing to
have in the house.
It was not destined to remain long
there. The husband s notice was at
tracted to it as he ate his lunchj the
mantelpiece upon which it bad been
placed being opoosite his seat at the
table.
"More purchases!" he RroAvlecL "What
have you got there ? What's the use of
throwing money away like that ? Who's
sick now?" ' 1
"You're altogether too quick to find
fault. It was given to me," responded
the wife. . i
"What is it, anyway ? Let's see it."
"A mere cure for catarrh." i
The man read the label and then put it
into Ins pocket, saying,
"I'll take it to the shop. It hasn':
cost us anything, and I'll give it to the
boss. It may do na some good in that
way." - L
"Unless you're sure he wants it,! you
had better leave it where it is. ;
"I know what I'm about," replied the
man, as he arose to put on his coat. 1
;
"Mr. Dennis, I've heard you say there
was no cure for catarrh. Now here's a
remedy that's warranted perfect! If
you'll try it I wish you'd take it from
me. - j
"Thanks ! It's the very medicine; I'm
using now, Got bottles of it. Keep it,
or give it to some one who has need of
it. Thanks, all the same." (
"I'll take it !" cried a fellow-workman,
with jocose eagerness.
To him the bottle was handed. j
"And now you've got it, what are you
going to do with it ?" asked the giver.
"You haven't got any catarrh." j ".. '
"No; but I've got children." t
"Pretty nearly as bad, I suppose.'
' "Does he want to get rid of 'em ?'
asked a third.
Into the midst of the jesting party
now came a small boy, carrying a tin
pail. ' ! ;
"Sorry I'm so late, father," he said to
fie possessor of the bottle. .
"All right, Jimmy; take this home
the men here are afraid of it." S
The boy took the medicine gingerly to
his mother, with his father '9 words.
That good woman thought, if therO was
any joke in the matter, it was a jokej
upon her, and seeing the medicine,
flung it out of the window with an angry
frown. j
The bottle fell upon soft ground, I and
was unbroken. As it shone in the sun it
attracted the attention of a little girl
' passing down the street, who directed
her grown sister's eyes to it, and was
. thereupon requested to pick it up. j
The young lady recognized it as a well
advertised compound, and deemed it
worthy of being deposited in the reticule
she carried. As she laughingly exhib
ited the prize upon her return 'home, a
favorite servant begged ,for it. ! She
knew a person who suffered greatly from
the complaint it would cure, she said,
and the medicine was given to her.
The person for whom she intended
it was a good looking coachman, who
paid her considerable attention. He was,
in fact, expected at the garden-gate that
very afternoon.
lie came and was given the bottle.
He received it with an expression of the
most grateful affection; but, although
afflicted with a slight cold, he did . not
feel impelled to use it. Indeed,! the
false-hearted man thought, as he placed
it in his breast pocket, that it would
make a fine present for a handsome
young cook of his acquaintance, whom
he purposed next to visit.
The cook was none other than the one
employed by the lady first introduced to
the reader of this story. i.
Upon the following morning, as Mrs.
Minton entered her kitchen, she saw the
. bottle upon the dresser, and surprisedly
took it up, for she recognized a peculi
arity on it. ,
"How came this here, Susan?" ; she
asked.
"That's mine, mum." . '
Bat as the cook spoke, her mistress
Had pulled the cork from the bottle, and
saw the slip of paper she had the pre
vious morning inserted. ,
"Susan, I gave this to my husband.
How did you come by it?"
"It was Mrs. Thompson a coachman
eft it here, mum. If it's yours, you are
welcome to it."
"It certainly is mine. Susan. I wrote
thia paper myself."
"Mr. Minton must have dropped it, I
suppose, mum.
"That s it, of course.
But as she wife read the words she
had penned, and meditated in the pri
vacy of her own room, she ceased to be
lieve her gift had merely been lost.
How could it have been dropped from
the pocket in which it had been securely
packed? And It had been her parting
gift.
She had dwelt with delight in her
musings upon her husband's surprised
smile as his eye fell upon her written
uiiections. She deemed her expressions
of affection therein as prettily and wit
tily conceived. 1 lor four days more she
would have to await his return. Mrs
Minton shut the bottle up in a drawer
with a sigh.
The anxiously -awaited knock was at
last heard, but it was accompanied by a
sound which made the wife think at
onca of her gift, and very shortly after
her mutual embrace ask her husband if
he had experienced no benefit from the
medicine which she had given him
At such a moment what would the pot
man say?
"It's all gone, but as you see he re
plied and coughed.
"I do not see that it is all gone, either
couch or cure she returned, rising and
giving him an indignant glance, and an
instant thereafter held the bottle before
his astonished gaze.
Mr. Minton fell back in his chair with
a confused laugh.
"Ah, I see! Jobson has been here.
"So you gave it to him, did you?"
"I thought he had greater need
than I."
"Of this?" asked the wife, uncorking
the bottle, and handing him the slip of
paper.
"This la meant for your head ,
But it should touca your Heart;
A wife's love is in it.
Though you far from her stray,
If you take his eaca day.
No other can win it."
"Am I to conclude that I have lost
you.' said Mr. Minton, as he hnished
reading the verse, "am I to suppose that
old J obson has gained you?
"Mr. Jobson has not been here.
"Then how comes it you have that
bottle?'
"I found it laying upon the kitchen
dresser.
But neither Mr. or Mrs. Min'on wil
ever exactly know how the "cure" re
turned to them unless they read these
lines.
Its singular reappearance in their
household has had, however, the good
result of making Mr. Minton confine
himself to the strict truth when talking
to his wife. She has only to say "bottle
to curb him in the slightest tendency to
exaggeration.
Only the General Manager.
At a station on one of the railroads
leading out of Detroit the train had ar
rived and departed, the other day, when
the station agent, who had been in the
place about three weeks, and was look
ug for a call every hoar to come to De
troit and take charge of the line, was ap
proached by a quick, well-dressed man
smoking a cigar, who asked:
"Keep you pretty busy here?'
"Yum," was the jerky reply.
"Business on the increse?"
"Yum," again.
"Do you run this station?" asked
the quiet man after a turn on the plat
form.
"Nobody else runs it!" growled the
agent. Have ! you got a patent car
.coupler
"Oh, no."
"I was going to tell yon to go
to
thunder with it if you had. Want specia
freight rates, I suppose!
"No, sir."
"I don't give passes."
"I don't want any."
"Waiting for the next train?"
"Not particularly."
"Want to charter a car?"
"No."
The agent left him on the platform and
entered his office and busied himself for
half an hour, when the quiet man looked
in on him and asked:
"What's the salary of a position like
this?"
"That's my business," was the prompt
reply.
"What's the income of this station?"
"Ask the baggagemen."
"Your name is isn't it?"
"Suppose it is?"
"Oh, nothing much only I'm 'the
general manager of the line, and I'd like
to exchange cards with you!" Detroit

I in vite the sick, no matter what their diseases may
be, to call anil investigate for themselves before aban
doning all hopes, for it will cost you nothing. I give
no encouragement unless there ts a fair prosp-ct of
making a cure. I will endeavor to be candid in my
opinion and rensonuide in my chargi s. I claim nt to
cure everybody, but to cure all that can be cured. I
have had twenty years' successful practice in the
treatment of both ncule and chronic diseases. I have
located in Portland, and all I ask is that yon give me a
fair, unbiased trial, by which I hope to merit your con
fidence, and give entire satisfnci ion to all suffering
humanity. My reputation has been acquired by being
candid with my patients, through j ears of successful
practice, both in Europe and in this country, and
studiously keeping up with the age. I know the cause
and remedy needed, not by guesswork, but by years
of experience.
In my treatment of many diseases I make use of a
new method of cure. The treatment is simple and the
most feasible of all. There is no unpleasant sensation
whatever attending the treatment. I invite all persons
afflicted to visit and freely convince themselves, leav
ing me to verify the a-sertkm that there has never
existed a remedy so start'iug and immediate in its
effects. I hese noted curative a ds. as handled in my
practice, are endor ed and approved by the faculties
of both Europe and America. The beneficial effects
are perceptible almost from the Htiirt. (.'uses reeartled

wonderful influence. And in no case can the treat
ment be attended w th the least danger, thereby tes
tifying it to bo the most harmless agent in therapeu

will minutely detail all of tht-ir bodily miirniaties and
mental disturbances written in a simple and natural
style, and in accordance with the nec-ssary de-ails oi

even with patients residing at a :l tance is highly de
sirable when practicable, and will more than repay
the patient the expense and trouble of a triple Port

manifold. A single visit In most cases will enable the
doctor to form an accurate opinion and note particulars
which miclit be lost sight ol in mere correspondence,
particularly when a microsi-opic and chemical analy
