Valuable Horses Sold. -(-Recently
George Stephensen sold his h to trot
ting stallion, Sir Walter, to Ai-k Van
Winkle and Wing, of Eugene; fwr the
Bum of $1,000. Sir Walter i o ie of
the best bred horses ever owned in the
State, and fortunately Douglas coanty
can boast of some of his stock. Mr.
James Dixon h i9 a twe-year-old stal
lion, one of his colts, which is a splen
did fellow. Just after the races at
Hillsboro Honest Jehn was sold te
Mr. Beach, one of the leading horse
men of the State, for $600. Mr.
Beach resides in Lake county and is
the ovner of quite a number of thor
oughbred and imported animals. He
entered Honest Jehn in the Portland
half-mile handicap which took place
Thursday.
Killed by Apaches. Wej are in
receipt of news to the effect that Chan.
Cjlvig, brother of Senator Gi W. Col
vig, of this county, has been killed by
Apaches in Arizona while jacting as
chief of scouts. Charley Mosher's pa
per, the Arizona Gasette, says: "Chas.
Colvig,: the chief of scouts, ( who was
killed by the treacherous Indians a few
days since at San Carlos, came to this
Territory about six years ago' and was
foi some time a resident, of this city
and county. His former residence was
in Oregon, where his parents reside,
one of his brothers being a member of
the legislature of that State. A life
on the frontier imparted to him a thor
ough knowledge ef the Indian: charac
ter, hence his tmployment as ichief of
scouts which cost him his life, i At the
time of the recent outbreak he was in
Oregon, but returned immediavely to
his post of duty." : j
The Circus. Sherman's circus ar
rived here on Monday afternoon. The
band paraded the streets and provided
excellent music. At an early heur in
the evening the capacieua tent was
perfectly jammed, a hnndred or more
sitting upon the ground in front of the
seats. At the second performance on
Tuesday evening there was not such
an attendance, although as large an
one as might be expected. This cir
cus is composed of all first-class artists
and is worthy the patronage of the
public. Upon both evenings univer
sal satisfaction was given. The per
formance consists, among other things,
f tumbling by Siegrict and Duray,
trapeze act by Adler and Duray, hori
zontal bar exercise by Messrs. Wil
liams and otherB, all the best ever giv.
en in this city. The tight rope special
ties by Prof. Siegrist are certainly
wonderful, such as placing a j chair
upon the rope and sitting gracefully
upon the back, turning summersaults
backwatd, and many other equally
marvelous feats. The riding by Miss
Kate Cross and Messrs. Burris and
Williams was excellent, but not better
than has been witnessed here before,
and Macley, as clown, did his part
quite well, all the time keeping the
risibilities of the large audience highly
strung up. Sherman's educated horses,
Tommy, Barney and Jack are all that
has ever been claimed for them, which
is much, performing everything repre
sented on the large, showy bills, and
it may be said, to! the credit of the
Messrs. Sherman, that these are the
only ones that have ever done so here.
Jack acts as a kind of clown, doing
nothing nothing that he is told, and
everything that he is told to not i do.

.. takes the reins in his mouth and drives
ft rpirited team several times around
the ring at a furious rate, ot speed.
Taken altogether this is the best circus
troupe that has visited us , for a long
time. i

whisky, left yesterday for Coose Bay,
Oregon, from where he will extend his

port whisky under the charge of his
clever agent s extending through all
the Pacific States, and Is becoming a

THE CirY WATER WORKS.
Sometime ago tin city completed
arrangements to more effectually guard
against loss by fire. The piece of
ground on Bo wen's hill occupied by
some springs was rented by the city for
ten ye n at a cost of one hundred ol
lars per year. The constructienis pro
gr8?ing rapidly and satisfactorily.
T .e excavation tor the reservoir has
been completed at a cost of $175, and
in dimensions it is thirty-four fet
square at top, thir y at bo torn and
twenty feet deep. Th contract foi
bricking and cementing it has been let
to Mr.8nonks for $180, and is at pres
ent ha-iling briek, saud, eic, to fulfill
the contract. From the rese voir thir
teen hundred le t of iron pipe will be
lui.l'to the juuotiou of Washington and
Jackson streets. Messrs. Bunnell &
Frazier, foundryraen of this city, have
the contract for furnishing the pipe,
which is four inches la diame'er, aud
theiiou half an ineb thick. The city
pays ninety cen-n per foot. The cost
ot laying this will probably b $100.

the total destruction of the business
portion of that place by fire on Friday
morning, July 14th. The fire broke
out in Osborne fc Co's. agricultural
warehouse about one, and by four
o'clock A. M. forty-eight business
huses and twenty three dwelli gs were
bu.ned, leaving the cLy virtually in
ruins. The flie swept through like a
tornado, burning bricks and frame
alike. The U. S. Laud office wit i sll
the records except those in tbe safe is
lost, an a stable with seven hordes
were burned.
