The Star of last week has it that
Mr. Sol. Abraham is having his build
ing cemented on the outside "to pre
vent the crumbling away of brick."
Sol. is doing nothing of the kind
The workmen are thus employed that
the owners of tbe building may thr w

Star would say that they were doing
all this work to ornament the build
ing. It is altogether with them whose

Gardiner Destroyed by Fire.
A correspondent writes us from Uar
diner under date o July 2oth, as fal
lows: During a heavy' wind yesterday
a fire spread from Hiusdale's alab pit,
burning three of Hinsdale's house
Simpson Bros, saw-mill, and nearly
every bouse in the upper part of the
town. Estimated lot-s. not less than
$50,000. Principal losses by the Gardi
ner fire yesterday: Simpson Bro., ten
buildings and mill; Gurdiuer Hotl,
Aurora Hotel, flue residence of Capt.
Leeds, Burcliard's store and goods,
Nelson A Reed's saloon, drug store,
Masonic Hall, schoolliouse, dwellings
of Jas. Uraham, John Grills, Win. Ma
gee, Chas. Smith, Fred Seymour aud
Mrs. Nicholson aud others.
' The Silver Cornet Band.
This band lately organized through
the efforts of Messrs. Langenberg Bros,
shows an unusual amount of energy.
Upon any and every occasion the band
makes Its appearance upon the streets
and upon each succeed! uir occasion.
without doubt shows marked im
provement. The instruments for the
band were purchased of Kobler A
Chase, San Francisco, and after other
manufacturers had been cousulted.
Their softness aud harmony show how
well the choice was made. Our citi
zens generally congratulate the new
band upon tbe enviable reputation it
has attained.

Tbe old military Soottsburg road
lias been blockaded by Wm. Patterson,

shame that the traveling public
should be made to go out of their way
seven or eight miles to accommodate
an old miser. 'Parties going or com
ing from Soottsburg on horseback
prefer going this route, as it saves
several ufiles travel. We caunot see
the propriety of Mr. Patterson closing
up this road, unles he is afraid some
one would see something, suspicious
on or about bis sheep' range. Those
traveling this road will please make
a note of It, and save trouble.

town, getting information for his new
State directory. Tue book is to em.
brace about 500 pages, and will, if
completed according to the proposed
plan, be an excellent work of refer
ence for business and professional
men, and indeed all interested in the
advancement of Oregon. Each city
aud town iu the State will be so com
pletely, written up as to show at a
glance Its agricultural, manufacture
ng, mercantile and other facilities.
A general directory of every resident
of Portland, and a complete business
directory of all other towns will be
given. The churches, schools, so
cieties, hotelx, newspapers and lead
ing business firms will be so fully de
scribed that persons in any part of
the Slate can see just what the ad
vantage are pertaining to- any town
in Oregou. Toe work will circulate
not only throughout the State, but in
California, aud wherever tbe trade ot
Oregon is desired, copies of the Mate
directory are sure to find their way.
Mr. By non will canvass Roseburg for
subscribers and advertisements, iu a
day or two; a little liberality on tbe
part of our merchants and others will
give the town a business standing,
which is sure to be of substantial ad
vantage to us. A haudsome map of
the State, mounted on rollers, and
corrected up to date, will accompany
each book, making it a complete in

Mr. W.lliam Xrask and others tell
us of a finirular occurmnce iu tbe
waters f tbe North Umpqua last
week. In the morning the water wai as
clear a a bell. At 11 o'clock the river
turned to a dark yellowish color, and
was mixed with sand aud clay, and iu
every way presented tbe appearance of
a stream at the head of which exten
sive miuing was being done. Those
living on tbe river thought perhaps
Mr. Dillard oo Steamboat had turned
loose his sluices; but as men above
Patterson's mill came down aud re
ported the river clear at that point,
the idea was abandoned. Everybody
was more perplexed when the stream
cleared itself in a matter of three
or
four hours. It is geuerally
believed .hat there was ao immense
land-slide into the stream from some
mountain near Tipton's mill, or thai
there was au earthquake. Who will
tell what was the trouble. -

THE FIKJE AT GARDINER.
Many Families Left Destitute.
We herewltn give an extract from
a letter received by Sheriff Hogan on
Thursday evening from Uardiuer. The
letter was dated July 28th : .
On the evening of tbe 26tb at half
past five o'clock, fire broke out in one
of the buildings belonging to Hins
dale A Co.'s mill, and, the wlud blow
ing a gale from NX. W, the flames
were soon communicated to the main
part or town, destroying all of tbe
main business houses and private res
idences. The fire spread with such
rapidity that most all of tbe household
goods went wiih the buildings. Tbe
following named persons sustained
losses as follows: Hinsdale A Co., three
dwelling, $1,000; J. C. McCue, house
hold goods, $700; Mrs. R. Nicholson,
dwelling and furniture, $1,030; Capt.
Leeda, dwelling and furniture, $2,500;
E. IL Burchard, store aud merchan
dise. $4,3iX); J. C. Veld, dwelling, $400;
Dr Brown, store, drug etc., $2,300; J.
Graham, dwelling and household fur
niture, $1,600; John Grills, dweUing
and store, $1,200; Reid A Nelson, ha
loou and fixtures, $3 '0; Masonic Hall
and furniture, Stiaoolhouse and furni

many more losses of which I am not
fully acquainted, but the whole will

less and almost penniless. Among
the list there are a few families that
are left entirely destitute.
