preme court. The facts upon which

paper, and we heartily endorse the
stand that paper has taken.

There Is to be found hanging upon
the walls of the different business
houses of tbe city what purports to be
a business chart of Southern Oregon.
The chart is not noticed by one person
in five hundred, and yet this same
chart cost our business men in tbe way
of amounts paid for adveitising their
cards therein about $600. Tbe printing
of tbe chart was an expense to the
publisher counting traveling expeu,
see, etc. not more than $150, and his
profits were at least $430. Had tbe
business men i of Southern Oregon
given Ibis $600 to their local news
papers for advertising they would cer
tainly have given publicly to their
business, and got their advertisements
In print in a way that they would
have been, seen; besides, they would
have helped the newspapers which
are always helping them.

SFUASTAL REGULATIONS.
A postal regulation has been In
force now for two months, which Is
not well known among business men,
or it would be more generally availed.
We refer to the fact that statements,
bills, etc, can now be mailed in an
unsealed envelope with a cent stamp.
Thus tbe monthly statements which
are made out by wholesale and retail
dealers each month, can be mailed for
one cent, but no writing otner than
tbe legitimate bill can be placed on

Christmas Tree at Civil Bend.
From Mr. L C. Kent we learn that
there were jolly times at Civil Bend
school houce Christmas Eve. There
was a Christmas tree and Uncle Johnny
Quinn played the part of Santa laus
to the merriment of all. Tbe tree was
finely decorated with wax tapers aud
ladJd with presents, and nobody was
forgotten. After tbe distribution of
f ifts all present voted to surprise Mr.
as. Deve.iD, to whose house they re
paired. Mr. Develin did n t look for
anything of the kind, but invited old
and young to take possession of bis
residence. Tbe party did so. aud
dancing was kept up long after tbe
hour when all w eh each other a
merry, merry Christmas.
Death of Father Gillam.
Mr. Corbin Gillam, generally
known throughout the county

a highly respected gentleman dejiart
ed this life at tbe residence of Mr. Jos.
McKinny, Wednesday last. The de
ceased was aged 83 vears last August.
He was tbe father of Mexsrs. T. J. Gill
am, Wm. Gillam, David Gillam, and

of this city. He was grandfather to

man has departed from earth to take
up a home in heaven.
.Caai of Rusia.
We now congratulate the Czar of
Russia upon a narrow escape from an
attempt on his life. In starting for
Moscow, his baggage was sent on
ahead, be, startiug soon after passed
it and reached Moscow safely, while
tbe baggage was blown up. A tuunel
was found running to a house one hun
dred and fifty feet from the point
where the explosion oecurted. It is
supposed the author of this hellish
plot was suffering from a disease J
mind superinduced by severe pain in
the back aud kidneys, to prevent a
repetition of like occurrences, it is said
tbe Csar has sent to Hodge, Davis
Co., Portland, Oregon, for a large ship
ment of the Oregon Kidmey Tea
Narrow Escape.
On Chrintmas eve Mr. and Mrs.
Compton attended the ball of the
Social Club. They left a fire in tbe
parlor stove. On their return to
tbeir home on Christmas mornimr at
3 o'clock, they discovered tbe floor on
fire and a hole burnt through the same
two or tnree reet square. Had tiiev
come back an hour later the building
would not escaped destruction and sih
closely is it connected with other
buildings, the greater portion or lioee
burg would bave been burned. A
spark from tbe stove probably caused

Camas Valley.
From Mr. J. Thrush, of Camas val
ley, we learn that when he left home
there were yet four iuches of snow on
the ground. Many farmers bad ex
hausted their feed and cattle were
in some iustauces bordering upon
starvation. He reports in addition
that Mr, Wm. Day has sold his inter
est in the saw mill to the Stanley
Bros., and that Mrs. Oates (Hugh
Barrs' sister) is no (tetter. Mrs Gates
is afflicted with dropsy, aud ber lower
limbs are reportea to be swollen to
the Size of an ordinary man's body.

Good Trade.
Mr. R. Fiournoy, during the cold
snap, and wnen general baa weatner
was prophesied for some time to
come, purchased 48 head of cattle
from Mr. Henry Waters, paying $5
per head for ' the same. The weather
has turned out fine, and Mr. F. has as
tne result or bis trade, 17 miicn cows
worth at least $20 each, aud 31 head of
heifers and steers, which he will now
safely carry through the winter.

Christmas tree received the gold ring
for being the ugliest man In the coun

nial intentions ; but we would advise
bim to go to Woodward's garden and
be placed on exhibition.
One of Coles valley's young gentle
men, whose name we refrain from
mentioning, started down to Hubbard
creek ( bristmas Eve after his previ
opsly engaged dulcina, and succeeded
in getting within about a mile of his
destiny when his horses broke through
tne ice. One horse fell pulling the
other down on him, which resulted in
crippling one horse and ruining the
harness-, leaving the hack to await a
thaw. The young man returned to
Umpqua Ferry sadly and alone.

pany with one of her children, she at
tempted a near cut home and got lost.

UMPQUA FERRY.
Indications of a storm.
There was a raffle for a gun here en
the 30th ult.
The ball on Christmas Eve was a
complete succe-s, and every one who
attended pronounces it the best they
ever participated in. There were 29
numbers sold.
We understand "Apwer" carried
away the prize as the ugliest man on
the Calapooia, decided by a vote at the
Christmas tree. We congratulate him
on his bad looks. So mote it be.
The Dog is Dead.
The East Portland Vindicater blinds
tbe sad intelligence of tbe death of
Thomas C. Raffety at that place on
December 16th. Thos. C. Raffety was
oue of the largest stub-tailed dogs
we ever met with. For years he
he had been met with at tbe drugstore
ot Raffety Brow., East Portland, and
was known by at least a thousand
people in the State. Thomas C. was
the father of, many barkers, but no
sou or daughter of his ever equalled
the father iu worth or general notori
ety. Mallory Raffety was Thomas'
owner. To him we say, old man, we
sympathise with you in your great
bereavement.
Annual Statement
The following is the annual state
ment of tbe common school fund for
Douglas county, which has been
kindly furnished us by county treas

Is now in better condition than
ever before. Most of the interest on
tbe money loaned has been collected
up, and, in many instanoes,interest-on

Rumor of Poisoning.
It was rumored on tbe streets last
evening that Uncle John Jones and
two of his family had beeu taken seri
ously and suddenly ill, and that tbe
symptoms of tbeir complaints were
those of persons who have taken pol
son. We were unable to trace tbe ru
morto any reliable source, and can
only hope that the rumor is uufound
ed, so far as the poisoning part of the
story is concerned. There can be no
doubt as to tbe illness of the family.
Serious Loss.
A private dispatch received in this
city states that tbe boom holding tbe
logs at Mr. J. J. Comstocks' mill near
Latham has bioke and the logs con
tained therein have been swept down
the coast fork of the Willamette river.
The logs and the boom are a total loss.

see the "competition" has not received
"encouragement" enough to repair the
canyon road : yet it must have more
encouragement soon, or the road will
be impassable. Now, the court should
know that the amieui turia that stood
in the right position to receive tbe
benefits of this "competition" and take
the road, requires a large amount of
encouragement. It is a long, hungry
subject one end in Canyonvllle and
the other la Roseburg, (I do not
know which end the head or tail-
is here, but tbe disbursing pocket is In
Roseburg and the receiving pocket is
here) and mmt bave more encourage
ment. Some of the people here are
not in favor of giving this "competi
tion" any more encouragement. They
say there is no competition, tbe
first company being enjoined from
collecting toll the present company
has no opposition, and they say it is
no benefit to the public ; for tbe rates
of toll allowed tbe first company was
only sixty cents for a wagon and one
horse, and eighty cents for a wagon
aud two horses, and the preseut com
pany, or the "competition," are al
lowed eighty-eight cents for a wagon
aud one horse, and ninety-six cents
for a wagon aud two horses. Well, I
do not see myself how this encourages
competition or benefits the public; but
I am a friend of the court aud know it
does do it, or the court would not have
said it did. Aud I know It was right
to take the road from the other com
pany tbat built it, and give it to the
amieui curiae, or the court would not
have done it ; for I am a friend of
the court, and theae grumblers will
soon learn that they will gain nothing
by abusing this court. But this con
yon road is a small matter compared
with what I wish to have doue to en
courage competition, and when I have !
unfolded my plans you will readily see !
the immense benefit it will be to the
public, and what a lively competition it
will make. It is simply this: The
railroad between Roseburg and Port
land, as now conducted, Is a monopo
ly. Now to encourage competition
and break down this monopoly, "for
the public good, rather than private
gain" I wish the court to take that
railroad from the present Owners and
give .it to me. l ,am tne amtcui
eurae that will stand in tbe right po
sition to receive the encouragement
to this competition. And if I get the
road all tbe courts and attorneys, all
newspaper men, stage men, hotel and
saloon keepers shall have "free passes"
over the road, and everybody else,
without regard to nativity, color, or
previous condition of servitude shall
travel for half-fare (not merely high
days and holidays, but all the time,
aud all freights shall be carried at
half-price. Now all that is necessary
to insure success in tnis enterprise, is
for tbe parties to be benefitted by It,
tbe parties to bave "passes," balf-fare
and half-price freight, to "stand In"
with me and the court, (I am a friend
of the court) in this matter, and we
are bound to succeed. I tell you, Mr.
Editor, this is a grand enterprise and
no chance fur a failure, for the court
will undoubtedly follow its decision iu
the Canyon road case and "everybody"
being interested with me, I should
like to kuow where any opposition is
to come from. Just ''stand in'' every
body and I will get this rtiiroud sure.
Then "come out of tbe house, Mo
Cartney," and we will all take a ride
at the expense of
Pick-handle Dick.

From tbe Jacksonville Sentinel, one
of our best exchanges, we take the fol
lowing interesting items of news :
Dr. J. A. Callender arrived here from
Roseburg last Monday and is. the guest
of John Miller, his father-in-law.
Died in Ashland, December 14th,
1879, Mrs. Elizabeth Hill, relict of
Isaac Hill, aged 73 years,3 months and
days.
We saw last week a luclous looking
orange weighing ten and a half ounces
that had just ripened on the tree of
our fellow townsman, Peter Britt.
A circular from the heaviest wool
dealers in New York, informs us that
Oregon wool rates are higher in tbat
market than any on this cpast or in
Texas.
It is tbe opinion of one of our most
thorough " sheep men" that if tbe
present weather continues two weeks
longer, Jackson county will be $50.
ooo loser in sheep alone.
On the first or th torra, Mr. Marks
of Ashland, who has a large number
of Angora goats on little Applegate,
lost ten of the flock, by freezing and on
the next day in cutting down a tree
for them to browse one he killed thir
teen more.
Advices from Lake county indicate
that the prospects for stock are very
gloomy. On the 23d there was ten
Inches of snow at Linkville and the
mercury had fallen to 10 degrees be
low zero. Many large bands of cattle
are scattered ou the range where they
must emit for tnemseives.
It is with regret that we note the
loss of the schooner May D. Pomeroy,
which sailed from Crescent City for
San Francisco on Dec. 14th. Bhe is
supposed to bave capsized near Point
Reyes having been found bottom up
off tbe Point. All hands have perished
besides twelve passengers, among
whom was David Pomeroy, of the firm
of Hobbs, Pomeroy a Co. of San Fran'
clsco.
R.M. Garret brought into the Sen
tinel office on Saturday a handsome
nugget of gold mixed with quartz,
about the size of a small ben's egg and
worth $100. The "specimen" was
taken out of the claim of John Mel
drum on the Carberry Fork of Apple
gate, and on tbe same day Mehlrum
took out twelve ounces besides of
smaller pieces, varying from fifty
cents to twenty dollars, the result of
only a week's ground sluicing.
