OAKLAND ITEMS.
Last Tuesday eveulng Thoa, Logan, the
man who ran off . with Fendel Stttber

penitentiary from till county and lately par
d.ned by Governor Thayer, accompanied
Joseph Eoid to Jas.; Tipton's logging
camp, there to engage In wood -chopping
There was nothing strange in Logan's
conduct until he reached the camp, and
then beyond a . singular quietness in .de
meanor he was not the least singular in
appearance. He atp his sapper with the
appetite of a hungry man and with ap
parent . enjoyment, ' and retired to ' bed
shortly l.r in conpany with another
man whose name we hare been unable to
lears. The man slept in the Same bed
with Logan, and in the same room, in
another bea sis feet distantJoseph Rtd
slept. The n'ghl passed away quietly and
the slumbers of the men were not disturbed
until 3 o'clock In the morning, when they
were awakened by the sharp, ringing re
port of a gun. - For a moment everything
was in confusion about ' the cabin, and
then a light was procured. When this
was ready, an examination, was made and
Logan was found half-way out of bed, his
hand grasping a rifle that was kept usu
ally standing at the head of the bed on
which be had retired, and there was a bul
let hole in both temples. Everything went
to show that the poor, unhappy man had
taken up the. riflts, placed the muzzle against
the aide of hia bead, and firing it, sent the
bullet crashing completely through his
brsio. -. Logan did not gasp fur a single
breath, and made no noise, and when exam
ined it was found he was dead. A general
alarm was sounded at soon as the fact of
the suicide was known, and everybody in
the neighborhood came to look at the inau
who had killed himself. Preparations were
at once made for Logan's burial, and on
Thursday he was placed in the last nam
row home of the dead.
There can be no reason offered for the
rasa act. it lie uau sorrows lie never
I oke of them, and if the suicide was pre
meditated, which is not likely, he kept his
tboughts to himself. There is reason for
the belief that he was crazy upon the sub
ject of self-destruction. Letters taken from
him wlieu arrested for stealing Sutber
tin's team showed that be had four times
before attempted suicide, two of which
times the letters speak of in particular;
once with a rifle, when be was stopped in
the act by his mother another time when
lie took strychnine and was saved by a phy
sician who happened to be near and need
a stouisch pump.
Let his faults be what they were many

actions at the time of his capture, and
when confined in the county jail all went to
confirm this bel.ef, and raised the question
whether the man should not go to the in

Poor fellow, in any event his spirit is at
rest now, and all are sorry that the mad
idea entered his mind which led to an end
of his existence.

A Narrow Escape from Destruction.
An attempt to fire the town was .made
last Tuesday night about thirty minutes
after nine o'clf 7- The would-be incena
diary crept through he transom over the
door in the rear of 8-Cramer s butcher
shop, piled up some shavings in a corner
of the midole room where waa stored a
lot of bacon, lard and tallow, and there
started the fire. The roaring of the flames
Brat attracted '.'.the attention of Mrs. B,
Fisher in the bakery adjoining the shop,
and she called the attention of her hus
band and Dr. Herbold to the noise made
by the flames. Dr. Herbold listened but
an instant and then shoul fire.' A tush
was made lor the ' butcher-shop and there
Messrs. Frazier and Joe Sheridan aided by
the Doctor, succeeded in putting out tue
flames which would have, in a wry few
minutes more, caused the burning of at
least two blocks and perhaps tlie enure
town. The fire had not under good heads
way was burning up the sides of I be
room and running through the cracks in
the wall and limiting the walla of the
bakery. With rare presence of mind Mr
Frasier pulled down the lining of the wall,
while Mr. Sheridan beat out the flames
with a broom. Dr. Herbold brought up
himself as a reserve with a bucket ot water.

There is no cine to lead to the detection
ot the incendiary. It was cither the work
of some one who wished a conflngration
that a chance for theft be offered, or it was
some enemy or Mr. tJramer, or some one
else in the block, who adopted this plan of

especial hatred. Mr. Cramer is quite
nervous over the affair. He believes the fire
was started bv some of his enemies, and so
firmly is he convinced of th'.a that on Wed
nesday he disposed of his shop to Mr, Mc
Gregor. ' :;
Words are not at our cemmand to suffi
ciently condemn the wretch who started
the fire. Though opposed to mob law and
the decrees of the court presided over by
Judge Lynch, hanging without trial
would be too light punishment for one
caught in the act of dring the towu. We
Would call the atten.ioo of all to the fact
that a reward ot $500 is offered for thn
arrest and conviction of any incendiary by
the Board of Underwriters of San Francis
co, and would nrge no effort should be
soared to caoture the person who has at
tempted to burn the town.-
Malicious Prosecution.
During the week there was a dissolu

Jackson county, and ShortI after he left

stolen a shotgun and some acids from him

a warn nt for -his arrest, "and brought him
back. When he got back to Canyonville,

to let Spencer go on his way. There is
no doubt of Spencer's innocence, and it
was settled beyond contradiction that Eng
lish had the warrant issued through spite.

man named Hoover in the poor house, work
ing all he can and making shingles, and
evidently an invalid, as any physician
knows on examination, and this is very
credible to Hoover, who has had three or
four hundred newspaper items, published by
some "friend, advising thj taxpayers to
look out for Hoov. Perhaps this "friend
is a pauper himself, and pay no taxes, and
perhaps he has scribbling on the brain, and
in either oase let him scribble on, and Hoover
will make all the shingles he can, and that
is the end of it. : .

' L. L. Williams Heard From.
All have heard of the scandal reported
by the Albany Democrat, connecting the
name of L. L. William, our former Couna
ty Clerk, with an offense against good
morals. As all are acquainted with the
Democrat' storv, it is not necessary to re
peat it in these oolumna. As soon as the
story appeared; in the paper named, Judge
Hurah wrote a letter to Mr. Williams,, di
recting the same to Boise City. As Mr.
Williams had already passed that place,
the lefer was forwarded to Virginia Cuy(
Montana, where It found its owner. Wil
liams immediately wrote a letter to tba
Democrat, which letter should appear in
that paper this week, and also one 10 j
Judge Harsh. In the . latter letter Mr. j
Williams denies the charge in every par
ticular- As the beglning he state he had :
never yet seen the. woman he wonld run
away with or the woman who would run
away with him. He admits that he was
acquainted with both Daniels and his wife,
but this acquaintance grew out of the tact
that the father and mother of Mrs. Daniels
waited upon him when he was confined to
his bed In Douglaa county from a wound
received from an Indian's arrow during the
Indian wars in Southern Oregon, and a des
sire to help in rtturn all those coucermd
in helping him' when he was in need of
tid. He nevrr ran awav or had anything
to do with Mrs. Daniels otherwise than
was proper, and instead of Daniels being
an injured man. be is a scoondrel who
would desert the wife aid circulate a story
detriments to her good reputation In order
to blackmail a friend who had helped him
and hi fatuity wfth money-whenever h
was needed to purchase a livelihood.
- As to Mr. Daniels or Daniels Mr. Wil
liams pays le knew nothing from the time

Judge Harsh 's letter reached him, and
then he was cunij letely surprised. ; Mr
Williams also states it was not his inten
tion to return to Oregon before he. made
trip through the Yellowstone country,
but now he felt that it was due his many
friends that the slander should at once be
cleared op, and he will at once return to
Oregon. Without saying further, we shall
await the appearance of Mr. Williams' r
tide ia the Democrat.
From the first we bad doubts as to the
truthfulness ot the story and knowing Mr
Williams to be a wealthy man we thought
there was a possibility of an attempt at
blackmail on the part of Daniels, and oou
sequentlr we published not a line upon the
sabject. Time has proven we were correct
in our conclusions, and soon L. L. Wil
Hams will be here to meet his slanderers
lace to face, and prove how base they are,

to know we wers not mistaken in tbe

The end of an attempt at deliberate
swindling has just been reached.
ASomei ime ago one Bubell, of Polk county,
became connected with the Coyote gravel
mining jompany, in which some of our beet
citizens j were interested and bad invested
their means. It became necessary in the
purchase ot the mine that there should be a
transfer lot mining stock, and tbe work of
transfer was left to Bubell to accomplish.
Acting upon the advice of Oasiey, who told
Rubtll "there were a dozen holes for him
to crftwl out of," Kubell transferred all the
stock; to himself personally, and left the
stockholders to do the best they could. The
stockholder one day found that Rubell
claimed to own the mine, and at once they
brought suit to recover their property before
Judge . Hanna, of Jackson county. The
Judge has rendered a decision ia the case.
and not only has he declared tba stockhold
ers are entitled to the mine, but he renders a
judgment iu favor of the stockholders and
against Rubell to the amount of $4,000
damages.
Gasley was np to bis old tricks in the
swindle, and the people of this county will
not be surprised at that which they would
naturally expect of him if the opportunity
offered. As to Rubell, he is not to bepittied
He was lead into tbe attempt to swindle by
Oazley, it is true, but be cannot be other
wise regarded than as a mean n.an naturally.
The fact that he was willing to commit tbe
wrong is proof enough against him.
We are pleased to note Gazley's defeat in
this matter, as we ha Ti been in sundry other
cases where he haa attempts! to play tbe
greedy dishonest hog. and were it not that
we do not wish to publish something just
