Gen. Howard says the Indians
are about to cross over into the
department under military con
trol of Gen. Crook. Whether or
not Howard Has secreMy hired the
hbstilej to temporarily step over
the line, is a'quesiion we cannot
answer; but we would warn any
one against believing that How-

Howard has

they would have Old Crook latter

The contract for the city print

to the Bee. Befo e the
matter
was finally
settled there wasr a
general war among the city daily
newspapers. Now everything
has quieted down, and nbt a word
is uttered by any of them except

of its cotemporanes.- 4

Those who havo taken the trou

published on the subject hereto
t fore, know fall well how fully we
appreciate the importance of the
enterprise. When we urgued the
building' of the mills no one eeem

several gentlemen have stepped
forw ard and are ready to take

others who are not larmers who

Unpleasant, tut True.
It is, painful to note ot late
v ears how many criminal- come
ilies. It is because they have been
brought up to be "above" hard
work. Meantime sturdy foreigners
who know the worth of a home
;n this free country, quietly take
possesion of the plow, the spade
and hammer. They dig and delve
as the .pioneer ancestors digged
and delved.1 Their strong limbed
boys and girls are put to the com
idol schools until they are old
enough to work, when they, too,
must earn ti eir own living and
neIP earn that of others. From the
ranks of these children of toreigu
horn citizens will como the men
ot power who are' to rule this
couniry in the next treneration.

j Pet Indians.
Toj prevent harm to the reserva
tion pet Indiana nowadays, says
the Pendleton lndependeuty when
ever one of them wishes to come
to town a regular soldier is sen
with him as an escort. On Monday
last an Indian named Warm
Spring Jo. with his squaw was
escorted to town by one-ot the
boys in blue, who, when he look
the Indian out, also topis' a gallon
demijohn of : somethiifg . along.
That evening Jo. and avo other
pet bucks were drunk and raising
Cam at or near the agency, and
illustrating the civilization process
as applied by the "solger." We
understand the "solger returned
to, town late the same nisrht to
have his demijohn . replenished,

self. All this is perhaps none of
our business; and we give it as a
matter ot news, and to disabuse
Ine mind of Coruoyer as to where
his pets get their inspiration.
