" V Short Crops.
It appears from present indications that
Uthe yjeld of small grain will not be as large
this year in Douglas county as was hoped
for by our farmers. A gentleman from
Myrtle Creek, in whose judgement we
hava faith, thinks that the Wheat crop ot
that section will be one fourth less this year
thaa lastthat while the grain will be
plumper and necessarilv of better .quality
the yield wiT be .one fourth less. Reports
received from other localities are the same.
The yield on Deer Creek will not be as
large as usual; on theCa'apooia it 13 not up
to former expectations; the same may be
said of Canyonville, Looking Glass, Ten
Mile and Camas Valley! But that the
grain is of better quality and will ccmm&nd
a better price is the universal opinion of
those best posted. . .?

WOODEN WTEDD1NG.
" Last Tuesday, at the fine residence ot
FnBtmasier II. C. Stanton and lady, there
was a f atheriog of the youth and beauty,
and diU of Reseburar. , Ihe occasion was
the celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Stanton's
wooden wedding, ftfter five years of happy
wedded life.
The spacious rooms of the building were
all filied. and the haopy ones whose wed
ded bliss was being celebiated, could not
but feel pleased at . the number ol their
friends. The evening was pissed in pleas
ant converse, croqm t, instrumental and
vocal music and a general good time wag
the ?eward of those who were so fortunate
as to be present. It was the universal re
mark that a no more pleasant evening
was ever enjoyed.
Mrs. Stanton was attired in her wed
ding dress, and to ft stranger, would have
appeared as the charming bride after a
happy courtsship; while our nend Hardy
looked for all the world the happy and ex-
pectaut bridegroom on the ev of partak"
ng of sweets before forbidden. We would
not be surprised to hear, if the confessions
of some of the younjj and unmarried la
dies and gentlemen present hereafter are
made public.that the sight of the happiness
of the couple before them, after five years
of wedded life, caused iheir hearts to
grow fonder and themselves to throw aside
all coquetry, and speak in more loving and
earnest ton s. W e noticea several couples
courting the shadows out of hearing; but
as it was doubtless a private matter with
them, we have nothing to do with it, uutil
the time shall come for us to announce &
edding and chronicle a birth.
Much of the enjoyment of the evening
inuH be attributed to the singing of Mr.
and Mrs. Flint, and to the fine instrumen -tal
music of Mies Mollie Abraham and
Mrs. De Souzer upon the piano, s well as
to those who, by their good nature, and
ready wit, gave life and laughter to all
near them.
We append a list of the presents and by
whom made:

Supper ws aunounced at eleven o'clock
and was everything that money could pur
chase and a good cook could invent, After
supper there was more music, more cro
quet, morn courting and more talking.
A i ab tut 12 o'clock the visitors commenced
depariicg, each thanking the hostess and
host for the pleaure they had receive J, and
a few minutes after midnight the lights
had been put out and evening's enjoyment
was at an end.
Later news contradicts the statement re
garding the probable death of E. Stephens
and family. A litter from Jaa. Turner,
dated Walla Walla, July 0th, rays Mr.
Stephens is at that place badly frightened
and unhurt. His cattle are safe, and his
family is at the Dalles, out ot danger.
Another letter say Nat Webb has lost al

. Fine Colt.
Tuesday Mr. Howe brought a quarter
brjd Percheron colt into this ci'y, which
promises to be one of the finest of "White
Prince's" descendants. The colt was foalded
on the 15 h of last May, is four feet or more
in height, has splendid action walking and
trotting like .a race horse, the fiam. of a
draught animal, kind in disposition, and
in. asured around the arm from sixteen to
twenty inches. The colt was sired by
Uncle Jimoy Cox's half-bred Perchron
horse, sired by White Piince, and is geners
ally regarded rs one of the finest colt in
the country. It is certain, for freedom of
action, age and size, Mr. Howe's colt U one
of the best colts -we have vet seen in
Douglas.
Angora Goats.
A gentleman reports a large drove of
Angora goats en route f r Oregon from
Calfornia. These goats are valuable prop
ertv and their extensive introduction into
this State will materially add to its wealth.
We are pleased to 'notice the introduction
of these goats into the State and hope that
our rich pasture lands will be covered with
vast herds.
THE RED DEVILS.
Some Interesting' Details not
Published..
Befoi
We are indebted to Messrs. S. Marks &
Co, for the following extract from a letteii
received from W. B. Laswell, Esq.. of Can4
yon City, Grant county, relating to the kifc
ling of poorTom Dixon and Mr. Higginson.
The letter was daied July 14th:
'From Mr. Stevens, post trader at Camp
Harney, who has just arrived from there, i
learn that John Dixon was at Harney the
day before yesterday, and safe. Mr. S. says
Thos, D xon and Frank Higgison havtj
been undoubtedly killed by the Indians
Some three weeks since they were travel-i
ing through that valley, accompanied'by al
man on horseback'. A large lores ot Well4
armed Indians came upon them suddenly,
but tha horseman managed to escape.'.
A letter receive from Mr. Laswell, byj
Judge Fitzhugh under the same date nai
the above, is to this effect;
"Your brothers and Mr. Flowers, I think
are safe. The Indians stole most of their
stock, and your brothers went along with
Genl Howard's command to try and recover!
their hst animals, and have probably sue
ceeded in getting the most of them I am
informed yojr fatherdnslaw has been toj
Long Creek nearly since the begining oft
the troubles. I don't think any' of yourj
folks have been injurtd in any way, except!
in the loss of stock." . I
Late dispatches announce the finding of
Tom Dixon's &n Mr. Higginson's bodies,'
and their burial.
In addition to the above, we have con
versed with Mr. F. G, Winningham, who !
returned from Ochoco, Wasco county ,Mon-i
day last. This gentleman biings news to
the effect that at Prinesville, it is believed
Ed. Stephens, brother ot Joe Stephens, andii
his family have been massacred by the eav
agi s. Ed. Stephens lived on Thirty Mile
creek, and was seen by Ike Winningham,
who staid with him one night, since which!
time Stephens and his family have not
been heard from.
The county, Mr. Winningham eays, is';
about deserted, and the Indians have about
cleaued it of stock.' Settlers left their
farms and g.'ain untouched and their stock;
behind them, and before leaving tore fences il
down that the stock might feed, if left alone
upon the grain the owners dared not wait;
to garner, five hundred head of cattle
were killed by the savages in one man's
corral in Beaver Creek valley. Ti e Win
ninguam bovs sold their cattle at Prines-
ville. receiving $6 per head for yearling,;
and $10 per head for older cattle. Of the;
country they sty it is overrated. Wheat,
rye and oats will grow there if well irriga-i
ted, but not withoutThose who wisb to take
stock there, should only go to Crooked ri
ver. There even some danger is to be ap
prehended from Indians, but there is to be
found good water and (rase, and it is as
safe from the Indian raiders as any other
grazing point in Wasco county. .
BUSY SCENE.
Jackson street, Roseburg,. is the scene
of ceaseless activity. The many new
b.iildings in course of construction, and
the hurried attempts of the workmen to
push everything along that the street may
be cleaned ot bricks, mortar, sand, lime,!
and lumber, show how fast the csty is.
growing, and how enterprising are its;
business men. Marks & Co. are looking to;
further progress. They will put up the:
froutof theirsiore entirely of stone and iron-j
and from W. I. Fried lander tve iearn that
the foundation and walls are to be so built
than another story may be added to the
building upon short notice. We hope the
time may yoon come. Roseburg needs a
large hall centrally located, and one placed
upon Marks & Co's, new store would ans'
gwer the public want. ' The work on Dr.
Hamilton's brick store is rapidly being
pushed forward. The doctor also looks
forward to the time when he will add arH
other story to it, and have it towering
above other business nouses a mouu-j
ment to his industry and perseverance
Above this we find the new building of
of Philip De Souzer, to be occupied by
Mr. Goldstein as . a general variety store
and filling a vcant spot upon the street.
Phil., a little over four years ago, opened
a barber shop oq the site of Marks & Co.'s
new brick store. He attended to his busiJ
ness, became comfortalle in a financial
way, ani in the time will probably be
one of the nabobs of the city, and
living evidence of what can be done by
anv one who will work and save in Doui
clas countv. Still further on is the hard-i
ware store of Jsewbury, Chapman & Co.
undei the superintendence of J. , W.
St ran ere. about completed. This makes!
the improvi ments now under way and to
be seen at a glance on Jackson street. Tehre.
area dozen or more houses now being!
built outside of this street a glance will
show to a stranger this; but a stranger will
not know by looking upon the improves!
ments being made that Roseburg: is an
old town and that there improvements are:
positive proof of renewed business life in!
the city, and that Roseburg and Douglas'
county in general have taken the hrst
healthy steps in the march of progress toj
ward prosperity. But such is truth. Thej
bent times in Doufflas are vet in the fu
turn ami the "bic bonanzas" are yet to
come. ,
A New Stock.
Langenberg Bros, are now having made.
in San Francisco a large stock of boots.i
shoes and gaiters, etc., expressly tor the
trade of Douglas county. Their long res
idence in this city enabh s them to judge;
what our people want, and when their
new supply arrives they will be prepared
to give satisfaction to all who may patro
nizb them. In the meantime tLey will
sell off the present stock oa hand at less,
than cost.
Fine Flour.
We are in receipt of a sack of fine flour(
from F. M. Gabbert. Esq , manufactured byj
the Myrtle Creek mills. This flour from the;
mills named has always been received with,
favor in this market, and we speak advis-
edly when w e say the sack in question;
makes as good bread as that of any raan-j
ufaciurei in the State. Thanks for your.
kind remembrance, friend Gabbert.
COMSTOCK'S PLANING MILL
During the week we visited S. J, Corn
stock's planing mill and fash and door facs
tory, near the railroad depot. It is the
most complete establishment of the kind
this side of Portland, and fills a want long
appreciated in this county. All t&e machin
ery necessary , to d. first-class work has
been purchased, and is now in good- work
ing order. There is a planing machine,
moulder, scroll, rip and cut-off saws,
sticker. &c, of new patterns and emoody-
ing all late improvements, and a large en
gine, furnace and boiler furnish the niotivV
power. The mill is superintended by a
fireman of large experience, and the work
done there is as good as can be purchase 1
anywhere in the State. Our attention wi s
esspecially directed to some mouldings. of
various sizes just fin shed, and we
can truly say we have never seen better,
more perfect in outline, clearly shaped in
the recesses and completely finished.
This mill accompl.shes a two-fold end.
It gives to Roseburg and Douglas county
an opportunity to buy sucn articles as are
man -facturtd at the mil, made at home and
of home material; a'so, it will save money
for home, the amount of which has hereto
fore been Bent abroad, and thereafter never
benefited any one in Douglas county.
We hope our citizens will work to suss
tain Mr. Conistock in this enterprise, and
in all others so well calculated to help the
courty." It is by. from and through such
enterprises saving to home and pi-event
ing home wealth taking - wings and flying
abroad that empires are . created, that
States grow from territories, that Oregon
will reap a rich harvest and a great name
in the world's commercn in the future
When our people thus think they will take
and put into use those grat gifts which
Nature has bestowed upon Douglas county
Then will Oregon bo the richest State in
the Union, and Douglas the wealthiest
county in Oregon.
Fun a Head.
The above is the caption of a programme
announcing that Mr. and Mrs. Wretland
will give a performance at Masonic Hail,
this Saturday evtuing, assisted by several
gentlemen well kuo.vn to our citizens. The
performance will consist of. singing, danc
ing, Irish and Dutch comicalities and short
acts, and will be ainajing to all who atleud.
Mr. and Mrs. WreMand are siars in their
particular lines, and in themselves are cap
able of giving a performance worth the
price of admission. The support they have
obtaiued.howc.ve'r, wiil add to the evening's
entertainment, and our ad v'co to our citis
zens is, go to the show and lauirh couple
or or three hours, and give retland and
wife a rousing benefit, ns they are .n every
way deserving of it.
Highly Complimentary.
In the Pope county (Mina.) Pnss of Ju'y
6th, we find the following cjmplimentary
notice of. Mr. F. P. llojran, our present ef
ficient Sheriff; "Mr. Pierce Ilogau is the
son of Mi. Patrick IL?2au, of West port, lie
left this county some five years ago. U3 is
what may be just ly called a tteli-niitdu man.
Those who know him wiil be glad to hear
of hie success in the ltH contest in that
(Douglas) county, and will put no hes'tan
tencyjn saying that the people of Douglas
county, Oregon, have secured, in the elec-
tion of Mr. llogan, a man who will prove a
faithful and efliciuut ollker." Because the
people knew Mr. Hogan to be what the cdi
tor of the Press says or him, is why
they of this county - elected him Sheriff
over his competitor by sacli a largo mpj irs

Last week we made mention of the loss
of a member of a prominent legal firm in
this city in the mountains on Co luille river,
The lost was. found by a settler, who dis
covered the tall lawyer's read towering
above tiie nr trees, ana all are once more

firm has gone to the Coquilte. The accident
of his partnei, however, made him more
cautious and he took a large bell with
him, so should he wander from the straight

Opening of a Street.
Mr. Aaron Rose has workmen engaged in
opening Mosher 8 tree'. This street be Jus
opposite Mr. Rose's residence, passes west
by Comstock's planing mill, and ends when
it reaches the river. The extension of the
city by the rcction of buildings tor vari
ous usee in ti at locality makes the open
ing of the street a public necessity.
A Long Hide.
After a ride of twelve hundred miles
Mr. George E. Wells arrived from Prescott,
Arizona. He arrived in good health after
his long ride. He takes the position of
