ELECTIONS FOR 1908.
General election June 1.
Registration reopens Sept. 20.
Closes for election Oct. 20.
Presidential election Nov. 3,
THE
REPUBLICAN
TICKET.
COUNTY
The position of representative
to the legislature is an important
math is the Republican candidate,
a very worthy, excellent man of
learning and good experience and
ability. He is a well known edu
cator, having held high positions
as instructor in the colleges of
the state. His duties as repre
sentative for Benton county will
be performed honorably, to his
credit, and faithfully for the
people.
The office of sheriff is one in
which the people can be much
neglected or safely guarded. W.
S. Gellatly is the Republican can
di dale for f he position. He has
grown to manhood in Benton
county, and is a member of one
of the best families in this coun
ty. He is of Scotch descent, hon
orable and capable, and should
make a good, efficient officer.
The people cannot make a mis
take in casting their vote for Mr.
Gellatly for sheriff.
The County Clerk's office is one
wherein the incumbent comes in
daily contact with the people of
the county in the transaction of
their county business. T. T. Vin
cent is the Republican candidate
for that office. Mr. Vincent
served Benton county as Recorder
of Conveyances, making a very
eiticient omcer. ms service as
County Cierk is probably the best
the county ever had except that
of B. W. Wilson. Mr. Vincent
attends strictly to the duties of
his office and has constantly re
fused to permit himself to be
used as a tool to promote the sel
fish purposes of those who have
since become his detractors.
Hence some of these disappoint
ed people have made unusual
assaults upon his work. Mr.
Vincent has generally satisfied
his supporters, and there is good
reason why he should receive the
hearty support of the people.
The office of county recorder
where the title deeds of land
owners are recorded is a position
which concerns all owners of real
estate. Emery J. Newten, the
present incumbent, is the Repub
lican candidate for re-election.
Mr. Newton
is a capable young
man, born and raised in Benton
county. He has made an efficient,
obliging and painstaking officer
and most assuredly should be re
elected. The office of county assessor is
one which materially affects the
interests of every property holder
in the county. It is the duty of
that officer to value and assess
all property in the county equally
and ratably the same- W. G.
Lane is the republican candidate
for that office. Mr. Lane spent
a large part of his business career
as a professional country sshool
teacher, until a few years ago.
His contact with property has
made him a good judge of values.
By education and business ex
perience he is particularly quali
fied to perform well the duties of
assessor.
The office of school superinten
dent affects every person in the
county and, has nearly all to do
with making efficient the public
school system of the county. H.
L. Mack, whose name has been
repeatedly commended in the
columns of the Gazette for the
position, will make a good, effi
cient officer, and the Gazette
recommends him for the position.
A county commissioner is one
of three officers who manage and
conduct the general business of
the county. The three compose
the county court for the trans
action of county business. They
pass upon and allow or reject all
bills presented for payment
against the county. On their ac
tion depends considerably ' the
amount of money which must be
collected by taxation for the pay
ment of county expenses- W.
A. Hawley, a resident of the
southern part of Benton county,
is a candidate for that important
office. Mr. Hawley is a son of
one of the early pioneer families
of this county. He is a success
ful farmer and stock raiser of
this county, a man of affairs in
his locality, respected and having
the confidence and high esteem
of all who are acquainted with
h;m. He is a careful, conserva
tive and successful business man
of good judgment and will make
a good, faithful officer for the
county. The Gazette takes pleas
ure in recommending him in the
highest degree.
r . Marion winces is a young
man of ability and a graduate of
the State Agricultural College, a
resident of Corvallis and now a
candidate for surveyor of Benton
county. He acquired his know
ledge of surveying in the Agri
cultural College which is a high
er recommendation for him for
the duties of the office than any
other recommendation the Gaz
ette can give him, except to men
tion that he acquired his scholar
ly attainments through this pop
ular, first and best educational
institution in the state of Oregon.
II. M. CAKE.
Every available seat was occu
pied at the court house last Thurs
day evening by attentive listen
ers to the address of Hon. H. M.
Cake, who is a candidate on the
republican ticket for United
States Senator. Mr. Cake ex
plained thoroughly the reason
why the people of Oregon should
elect a republican for United
States Senator. Oregon is a new
state. Her future development
must depend largely upon appro
priations received by Congres
sional legislation for the improve
ment of the natural resources of
the state. In both houses of
Congress there is a large repub
lican majority. In order to se
cure the most favorable legisla
tion a republican senator can ob
tain better results than a demo
crat, because more favorably in
touch with the majority in Con
gress. A republican senator has an
opportunity Of securing promi
nent positions on important Con
gressional committees whereby
he can render material aid in ob
taining legislation most valuable
to the state. On the other hand
it is rarely the case where a
democratic senator in Congress
with a large republican majority '
ever obtains influential positions
on important committees. - Also
it is seldom the case that a demo
cratic senator ever becomes the
author of important legislation
where the majority is republican.
nother very important reason
was urged that, as Oregon is a
republican state, the voters of
the republican party should cast
their ballots for a republican sen
ator in order to maintain the state
in the republican column-
It was observed very' clearly
throughout Mr. Cake's address
that he was very reluctant in
urging any reasons personal to
himself. While the reasons urged
by Mr. Cake are very important
why the voters should elect him
as their choice for United S- ates
Senator, there are other good
reasons not mentioned by him
and which the Gazette treats
more in detail in another article
Among the most important of
uicsc la me a., wiou xixj , ucmc
has not followed politics as a
business or profession or as an
, Tl i r
office seeker. He has jor many
vears Performed the simole duties
as a citizen of Portland, and as
one of the many business men of
the city. He has taken a promi
nent part in the public duties of
assisting in the arduous work of
building up the business interests
of his home city and thereby the
.
State at large. Becoming a Can-
didate for United States Senator
is a departure from his usual
course of business.
Mr. Cake is an able man and
deserves the hearty support of
his fellow republicans.
OUR SENATOR.
H. M. Cake is an able man,
who has taken an active part in
the developing of Portland, his
home city. For many years he
was president of the Portland
Chamber of Commerce, devoting
his energies to building up along
these lines. Mr. Cake has not
heretofore taken -a part in poli
tics, other than that of a citizen,
and not sufficiently so as to be
classed as a politician. lie is
classed as a good lawyer, and his
efforts have qualified him as a
good business man, otherwise he
could not have been entrusted by
his companions so long as presi
dent of the Chamber of Com
merce, the leading business or
ganization of the city of Portland.
It is universally understood that
too many mere politicians are
elected members of the Senate of
the United States.
While good men are generally
elected as senators, yet a mere
politician, from the very nature
of his calling, cannot become
completely in touch with the
business people and their inter
ests. The fact of Mr. Cake's close
connection with the business in
terests of his city and his long
service along those lines, puts
him in line so when elected as
senator he will be in touch with
the needs of the people and quali
fied best to serve their interests.
FIFTEEN YEARS OF AGONY.
Will You Continue to Suffer From
Catarrh in the Face of This
Testimony.
"I suffered for fifteen years witti ce-
tarrbal troubles so bad that I had to leave
the sea. I could not lie down at night
to sleep, on account of the constant ca
tarrhal dropping. I went to two different
hospitals for treatments but without any
lasting benefit. . I was constantly rais
ing yellow and green phlegm, and the
trouble was so unbearable and nauseat
ing that I was ashamed to go out in com
pany. I have need only two bottles of
Hyomei, and have been cured bv the
remedy It has made full and complete
recovery. Capt. Willnef."
Hyomei is a drv, healing, antiseptic
air, extracted from the Eucalyptus groves
of Australia. It is a pleasure to use
Hyomei, because you d" not take it into
the Etomach; yon simply breathe in this
germ-kiliing air, and relief is immediate
and complete recovery comes in a few
days. Hyomei outfit, including an in
haler that will last a lifetime, costs $1.00.

JACKETS!
Eit
of Conversation
Overheard
From a Closet.
There was au uneasy stir at one side
of the closet. It was Lou's jacket.
Finally it spoke in a tired,
nervous
voice:
- "Oh. dear: Lou has left me hanging
by a loop, and my shoulders sag so
that 1 can hardly get my breath. 1
don't know how 1 can ever look nice
and fresb if 1 get no rest."
May's jacket roused itself to answer:
"You poor thing. 1 am so sorry for
you: Now. my shoulders are resting
so nicely on this coat frame. May is
never in too much of a hurry to slip
ru.e well on it. Tomorrow some one
will be sure to say to her, "How fresh
and nice your jacket looks:' "
"That's just it!" grumbled Lou's
jacket. "And they will say to Lou:
'Ilow wrinkled your jacket is.: It
doesn't seem to keep its shape at all
well.' And all tbe time it is not my
fault. How can 1 rest hung only bv
i a loop, and ttwt not a strong one?
i There's a button off. too. and a three

wuen it is torn birser her mother win
see It and mend it for her. Oh. dear.
tnis loop is giving way, and l am go
ing to fall to the floor! I suppose that
means dust and more wrinkles."
With a gasp, the jacket sat down,
falling directly upon a pair of muddy
overshoes.
May's jacket peered down through
darkness to where the other lay for. a

nap. It looked so fresh and bright the
j next morning that no one ever dreamed
it knew au about the troubles of Lou's
jacket.
A QUEER LIGHTHOUSE.
Lampless Beacon In the Hebrides
Lights the Mariner's Way.
On Armish rock, In the Hebrides,
Scotland, there Is a lighthouse with
out a light. That does not mean that
the light has been removed from it;
that the house is no longer used for
Its legitimate purpose. On the con
trary, it serves as a beacon for the
sailors and fishermen every night, and
yet there Is no light In it
It is perhaps the most remarkable
lighthouse in the world. It Is conical
In shape, and at the summit is a lan
tern in which there is a mirror. On
Lewis Island, 500 feet distant is an,
ordinary lighthouse, and from a win
dow in'" Its tower a stream of light is
thrown on the mirror In the Annish
rock -Zantern. The rays of this light
are reflected to an arrangement of
prisms, which make them converge to
a focus outside the lantern, and from
there they diverge in the necessary di
rection. Thus a lighthouse exists that
has neither lamp nor keeper, and yet
it serves all the purposes in its locality
of a costly and elaborate structure with
all the accessories that modern light
houses have.
Descriptions In Prose and Verse.
Pass around slips of paper ,to each
player. Each one writes his or her
own name at the top of the paper and
folds it over to conceal the name.
These slips are collected and redistrib
uted, with instructions to compose and
write a rhyme or verse about the per
son whose name is on the paper of
course without looking or knowing
whose it is. The apropos or malapro
pos hits make lots of fun.
Then distribute slips to the young
men only, each having the name of
some girl present written at the top
and folded over to keep it secret. The
young men are to describe the girls
from memory. Not knowing whom
they are to portray, the naturally pro

But up in the nurs'ry i didn't have room
To do '1st like witches should.
An' so when he's teached to ride on a

Like all the witch cats do.
We'll ride through the night 'thout any

But you won't be 'fraid of your own

I'll whisper to you it's a play 'at I've
