DISEASED POULTRY SOLD
IN
OPEN MARKET.
While visiting a relative In a distant
City the family physician made this
tmusual request: "I understand you
are an expert on hen health, and I am
come to ask you a favor. I have sev
eral very particular patients, and their
nurses have found It difficult to se
cure good squabs and chickens. I
have therefore volunteered to purchase
them, and I am anxious to have you
accompany me to market"
"Well, what do you think of the
poultry on display?" asked our friend.
"Fair," we answered, "but it would
have been better If some had not died
before they were killed."
Our enigmatical reply puzzled the
physician for a moment, and then he
demanded, "Do you mean to assert
that some of this poultry died of dis
ase and was then dressed?"
"That Is the exact meaning," we re
plted. We hurriedly returned to the booth
Where the diseased specimens had
been detected, and there they hung,
limy and blue, on the hooks, 'while
customers crowded around the stall.
The physician quickly turned to the
dealer and, pointing to two fowls In
question, asked, "Are those fresh killed
Chickens?"
"Sure," said the marketman; "just
fresh this morning."
The doctor purchased thorn, took the
booth number, and we went on. The
fowls had
both died of
diphtheria.
When we
pointed to
their swollen
faces and the
putrid white
patches iu
their throats
and explained
to the sur

sons forget that fowls have organs
similar to a human being's, perform
ing many like functions, susceptible to

and afflicted by diseases, contagious,
chronic or temporary.
Many will be surprised to hear that
poultry are subject to pneumonia, lar

lag worms, corns and others too nu
merous to mention. Turkeys are the
only fowls we have seen with appendi
citis. The operation was a failure.
The symptoms of these diseases are
all classified and remedies prescribed,
and great poultry remedy houses are
' now manufacturing Immense quanti
ties of chicken medicine both In home
opathic and allopathic form. In 1898
the state of Pennsyl
vania issued a mag
nificent volume of 750
pages on "The Dis
eases and Enemies of
Poultry," and 15,000
volumes were distrib
uted through the state.
This handsome book
was considered a sim
ple piece of political
graft and is derisively
referred to as "BIrdy

.Diphtheria, consumption and cholera
are considered the special germ dis
eases among fowls. The first two enu
merated and chicken pox show many
of the symptoms displayed by human
beings and are supposed to attack
those who come in contact with the
affected fowls. The feverish, putrid
breath, white patches in the throat
and extreme weakness of fowl diph
theria are similar. to the dread disease
that attacks human beings.
I In fowl tuberculosis there Is no
cough nor hemorrhages. Little cheesy
lumps or swellings called tubercle ap-
pear about the joints and in the liver,

become pale, and the bird wastes away

A QUEER PEOPLE.
Manners
and Customs
Of the Hairjf '
. Ainus of Yaxo.
Among the least known people of '
the world today are the hairy Ainus
of the island of Yezo. A traveler i
save of them:
:The men ffrow ereat fer T " of Mocks 1. 2, and t, onr
- o o ' : t 1 ru :n -v 11:- ;
beards, of which they are excessively i
proud, and their bodies are thickly
covered with hair, almost like mem
bers of the monkey .tribe. The wo
men grow no hair on their faces,
but seem to find a solace for this
imaginary defect in tattooing mus
taches on their lips and often prim
itive designs on their hands and
arms and also across their fore
heads. Young unmarried women
have very little tattooing on them,
but once a woman is married her
husband seems to take a pride in
decorating his bride with repre
sentations of hirsute adornment.
The modus operandi is one which
requires considerable fortitude on
the part of the patient, since the
crudest form of tattooing is adopt
ed. This consists of making a num
ber of incisions in the. skin with the
point of a knife. A characteristic
of the Ainu race is the color of their
skin, which is of a deep bronze or
eopper color, and in nowise resem
bles any other of the oriental races,
but is more like that of the Ameri
can Indians. ,
"The Ainus have no records, writ
ten or otherwise, of their former
history nor of how and whence they
came to inhabit the island of Yezo.
Leerends, however, exist among cer-
tain of the Ainus to the effect that
many years ago Yezo was inhabited
by a race of diminutive people wjjo
were conquered and apparently ex
terminated by the Ainus. These

constructed over a form of rectan
gular, circular or oval shaped pit,
many traces of which are still found
in Y"ezo and the Kurile islands. A
few years ago the present writer
also discovered on the Bering sea
coast of Alaska some perfect re
mains of a pit dwellers' village,
which is" quite unlike, any settle-;
ments made today by the Eskimo or
Aleut natives of Alaska.
"The Ainus claim that at some
remote period they were themselves
the inhabitants of some far north
ern country, and as evidence of this
they cite their hairy bodies. They
say, 'Why, if we did not come from
a cold country, should we need to
have skins like a bear V It is pos
sible that they did migrate south
ward from the shores of the Bering
Kamchatka and the Kuriles.
"Like certain other northern
races, the Ainus have no religion.
They have no knowledge of a su-
preme being ana no Deiiei m a iu
ture state. Mr. Landor, who ques
tioned many natives on various sub
jects, was once scornfully told by
one of them that 'the Ainus are
taught nothing and they know noth
ing.' This exactly describes the
state in which they live." Chicago

The Old Masters.
Prices which run to five figures
are frequently given for paintings
by what are called "the old mas
ters." But "what of the original
cost? A collector who has been
making inquiries quotes the follow
ing startling figures :
' Michael Angelo, he found, was
Daid only about $40 a month while
he was at work on his cartoons of
the battle of Pisa. Leonardo, who
acted as his assistant, received the
same wage.
Correggio received less than $10
for his "Christ In the Garden,"
while Carracci's "Resurrection"
brought its painter still less. Albert
Durer was seldom paid in cash for
his pen and ink portraits. A bag
of flour, a pair of boots or seme
such equivalent satisfied him.
Rembrandt, "the mightiest gen
ius," received as his highest price
under $500 for his "Night Watch."
Valesquez worked chiefly for the
Spanish government. He was paid
on an average $35 a picture.
Street Cars In Mexico.
"Street car conductors in the
City of Mexico," said a tourist, "give
a receipt to each passenger on tak
ing a fare. The pads are number
ed and show as quickly as a cash
register how many fares each man
must return to the company, provid
ed that the passengers accept the re
ceipts. The Mexicans never forget
to demand a voucher, for each is a
numbered ticket in a monthly lot
tery with many rich prizes, and the
gambling zeal of the passengers acts
as a check on every fare taken in."
New York Sun.
Surprising.
"Yesterday was my birthday.
"I suppose your husband ga?eyou
a little auiprise?"
"Oh, yes. He came home before
midnight." Houstoa Post. -
