MISTAKEN REFORMERS.
There is sucti a great variety
o
t
moral reformers and refartr
it a man who lays no claim to
insr a reformer and who is not
c iscious that he needs reform
ing must be greatly perplexed
v ien he attempts to indentify
the real, "simon-pure" article,
His . perplexity becomes yet
greater when he hears each re
former, or little group of reform
ers, snout, We are it; we are
the real thing; only we know
what needs to be reformed and
hnv it must be done."
Doubtless there is much that
should be reformed. Cool, cal
culating, rational and practical
thought and action will ultimate
ly compass every necessary re
form, and whatever may b
reformed by the application of
these will remain so. But most
unfortunately not all reformers
seek remedial measure by the
exercise of such thought and
action. There is a large class
posing as reformers par excel
lence whose thought and action
cannot be justly regarded as be
ing Cool, rational and practical,
More's the pity of this. Most
men have been accustomed to
think that the church is a sure,
safe reformer and the repository
and custodian of all the reform
ing agencies of any value what
ever. The church itself has put
forth such claims and many men
outside of her pale have accept
ed her claims v.s trv.?. Thej
ought to be true. Sometime in
her history "t m y hav3 been
true, but the utmsL slrelcii of
credulity is required to believe
it true today.
What has gone wrong? Pro
fessing to accept and to order
their lives by the most perfect
cc Jo of morals and the most pro
found precepts for human guid
p.nce ever presented to man, here
is a multitude of men, collec
tively known as the church, pur
suing frantically, fanatically
nursuin.tr methods of moral re
form which are altogether
irrational and impracticable,
Some of this multitude are doubt
less canting hypocrites, but that
all or many are such would be an
unwarranted and most uncharit
able conclusion. They are sim
ply mistaken. They have been
misled, misled by their leaders,
some of whom are playing the
demagogue, few of whom, be
cause of theu- training or lack of
it, are not wholiy unfitted to give
wie and practical counsel upon
those t':ings which concern the
regulation and government of
men of all classes, conditions and
opinions. The result is the mass
of these good, well-meaning
people have lost sight of at
least two fundamental truth?,
vis; That the code of morals
and the precepts promulgated by
the Savior are addressed to the
individual; That human ex
perience proves the utrer futility
of attempting to reform men en
m.ips. Christianity would reform the
multitude only by first reform
ing its units, the individual.
Human experience proves this to
be the only method which is
rational and practical and pro
ductive of permanent reforma
tion which will never need to
be reformed.
Then these good people, be
lieving they are the only expon
ents of morality, and t!iat the
views held by them are the only
right views attempt to force
these upon others. All men must
accept their views of the liquor
traffic, of the sanctity of the
sabbath, of the kind of amuse
ments which are not sinful and
of many things besides these.
They a:t uncharitably, , irration-
ally and even fanatically.
In vain may men hope to do
any real good on such lines. They
are at fault. The church has
virtuallv lost, sia-ht of her true
mission. Let ' her purify
l.
er
altars and cleanse her sanctuaries
and then go out and reform men
individually until the glad mil
lennial days shall come when no
man shall need reformation.
A SPECIOUS TEXT.
The earnings of the United
States Steel Company, common
ly designated as the "steel trust,"
are made a text by part of the
metropolitan press for an assault
on that corporation and an at
tack on the tariff. Opposition to
the principle of protection is the
real animus insoiring all this.
The $45,500,000 which is given
as the net earnings of the trust
for three month is a large sum,
but it is earned by an immense
capital. This capital is not held
by Carnegie and a few of his
associates, but is for a very large
amount held by poor men me
chanics, clerks, professional men
and working women who have
put their savings into the guar
anteed, six per: cent interest-
bearing bonds of the corporation.
These bonds represent capital
which the company practically
holds in trust. Considering
whose money this is one may
wish the earnings were even
greater.
How far the tariff hag made
these profits possible is always
exagerated beyond measure by
those who would destroy protec
tion.
The products of the trust are
armor plate, railway rails and
tructural steel. The govern
ment uses nearly all the- armor
plate made, thoueh some years
ago the Kussian government
placed an order with Carnegie at
the Homestead works. Of course
the government does not Day
tariff on this product. Steel
rails are not yet manufactured in
quantities equal to the home
demand. Structural steel has
a lower rate of protection under
the present than under any form
er tariff.
Of course, were it not for the
robber tariff" farmers would
build sky-scraping houses and
barns, and railroad clerks might
build railways for themselves.
It is quite possible, however.
that the stable policies pursued
n the conduct ot the eroverment
the wise and beneficent policies
of the republican party have
ontnbuted to the prosperity of
this corporation by far more than
the robber tariff.
