LABOR U I S.
TI-i nf-.Mhidft of the Chicago
Federation of Labor in its attack
on President Roosevelt is a dis
grace to all affiliated and sym
pathizing labor organizations and
a reflection upo i the pfnpleof
the nation. Because the presi
dent saw fit to refer to Debs,
I.Ioyer and Haywood in the same
breath with Harriman, all of
whom he characterized as "un
desirable citizens," the feder
ation was up in arms.
Ivloyer and Haywood are under
indictment as accessories to the
murder of Governor Steunenberg
of Idaho. The federation claim
ed that the utterances of the
president would be detrimental
to the interests of the indicted
men when their case came up
for a hearing and demanded an
explanation and retraction of
the chief executive. Roosevelt
answered in a manner which
should have settled the matter
once for all.
In his letter to the federation
at Chicago, as given to the pub
lic, the president made it very
plain that he considered Moyer
and Havwood . "undesirable citi-
. , i!
zens, not so mucn on account
of their present plight as on ac
count of their obnoxious past.
On account of their past he con
demned them and for the same
reason he condemned Harriman.
Bat while he made plain his su
Dreme indifference to what the
federation might do or Harriman
might do, or any other party or
parties might attempt in opposi
tion to him, he also gave empha
sis to the fact that his first con
sideration was a square deal for
all men under the laws of the
land regardless of the fact of
personal wealth, power or pov
erty. A more manly, able and
fearless letter could scarcely
have been written by any man
under the circumstances.
To the shame of the federa
tion at Chicago they again sent
an open letter to Roosevelt in
which they attempt by threat to
force him to "toady" to their
caprices. In certain respects
