GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATES.
Many things are happening
these days to incline one to the
idea that there is a tendency to
ward centralization of govern
mental power in the United
States. The latest movement in
this direction is certainly inter
eating, or will be for some, as it
U a unique proposition. It is an
investigation of the causes of so
many divorces.
Just why the webs which Dan
Cupid spent so many hours of
labor and love to weave should
have been cut and slashed so
ruthlessly by various judges
thro j'iout the land is what the
government proposes to find out.
Tae desire for this data is based
upon the idea of more uniform
divorce laws in the various
states- In order that the gov-'
er.iment may accomplish its pur
pose clerks will visit every state
in the union and copy the di
vorce records of every court
within said state. In fact,
j.:.;oi work has already been
done under governmental orders
in some of the eastern states,
and a dozen or more are expect
ed to arrive in Oregon sometime
during the present month.
iviuicnomaii will be the first
Oregon county to have her di
vorce court records investigated
and the investigation will cover
a period of twenty years back.
All features of the various suits
for divorce, whether "just ordi
nary" or sensational in the ex
treme, are to be published in the
reports of the Department of
Commerce and Labor. The in
vestigation was started upon
the recommendation of Presi
dent Roosevelt in one of his mes
sages) to congress.
We fancy that after the publi
cation of these suits for divorce
begins the reports of the Depart
ment of Commerce and Labor
will be read regularly, early and
late, and by all classes, even by
intellectual people. It is safe to
predict tha- the first few editions
will run short but the depart
ment will soon "get next." "
Thousand Nights' Entertain
ment!" Here is promised data
which shall cause the glores of
the "Arabian Nights' to fade
into insignificance. Whether in
compatibility of temper, the use
of intoxicating liquors or infideli
ty shall prove the reason for the
suit for divorce most frequently
unearthed by the investigating
committee remains to be seen.
It will be interesting to learn
whether men or women are the
more frequent petitioners for
escape from the yoke that binds.
SATS NEVER AGAIN.
William Randolph Hearst says
he's had enough. If he sticks
to this sentiment there will be a
feeling of intense relief exper
ienced by the masses irrespec
tive of political affiliations and
echo will answer far and near,
iood enough;' Willie is m
command of scant respect at the
hands of his lellows, even
among those who know him best.
In California, the state where
he made his home for so many
years, and where he has great
properties, he is blessed with a
large army of decriers. Willie is
politically dead, but he died hard
and none to soon. Had one
counseled with his nostrils he
would have declared that pol
itical death has gathered the boy
to his Fathers some . time since.
Ou January 3 Willie Randolph
sang his swan sons, which reads
as follows:
"I myBelf am not and will not again be
a candidate for any' office, but I am aa
mac 1 interested as ever and even more
interested than ever in the promotion
of the principles of the Indepeudeo-L-agae.
It seems to me that we ran a
feel satisfaction upon what has been ait
is beiii; accomplished. And it seems
me, as patriotic- citizens, we need n
care particularly what : individuals P"
the principle and reform into effect
long as they actually be accomplished fo
the benefit of oar fellow citizens.
"I believe that the league will go for
ward to further aad better achievements
and I heartily ofier you, my friends, un
best services as a feliowworker to those
ends." ; .:
From the above we learn that
the Independence League is to
receive tha heritance of "good
will," that the singer of the song
of the dying swan is going to
strain himself in assisting the
League in placing its mystic
mantle here and there indiscrim
inately for the good of "our fel
low citizens." Taking into con
sideration that because Willie
dragged the League about by the
tail he finally forced it to nomi
nate him for governor of New
York, thus making it a party to
his political death, it will be seen
that there is in his latest state
ments to the public much evi
dence of forgiveness on his part,
Rest in peace!
"SBESE OF THE LQED" TALKS
Tells Court How She Receives
Messages From on High.
Ia Portland the wild ravings of
the "Holy Howlers" still go
on, and the Juvenile Court heird
from the youngest convert of the
faith a most remarkable story a
few days ago, which is related in
the Journal thus:
Captain Bailey told the court
how he had found the child a 5ew
days ago trembling from the ex
citement of a religious frenzv,
snapping her fingers as she held
her bands high in the air and
giving utterance to an uniatelli-
snble jumble of words that re
minded him of the first babblings
of babyhood.
"Tell me what you were ris
ing and what this all means,"
said the judge as he took the lit
tle girl by the hand.
"Well I was receiving a mes
sage from theLord," answered
the child, her big, daik eyes
looking straight into the judge's,
"And how do little girls like
you receive messages from the
Lord?" queried the court." "And
what were all these strange mut
terings did you speak more
thaa one language?"
"Yes sir, I was speaking Chi
nese, German, French and Portu
guese," came, the astounding
answer with the studied accuracy
and unwavering expression of a
student ot the catechism.
Evea the judge was nonplus
sed at the child's statement. He
hesitated a moment before ask
ing the next question: "Do you
undersiand all of these lang
uages?" "No sir," she replied, "but
mama told me."
The pretty little girl whose
face and features ladiated intelli
gence, then told the court how
she and her mother had left their
home in Los Angeles in response
to a call from the Lord to act as
missionaries.
'Did you get that call from
the Lord, too?" asked Judge
Frazer. "No," she Vansweied,
'but mamma did, and she alwajs
takes me with her."
The mother was ordered to
keep the child away from the
meetings, or the proper author
ities will take the little one in
charge

A Most Valuable Agent.
The glycerine employed in Dr. Pierce's
medicines greatly enhances the medicinal
properties which it extracts from native
medicinal roots and holds in solution
much better than alcohol would. It also
possesses medicinal properties of its own,
being a valuable demulcent, nutritive,
antiseptic and antifermcnt. It adds
greatly to tho efficacy of the Black Cherry
bark, Bloodroot, (.olden Seal root, Stone
root and Queen's root, contained in
"Golden Medical Discovery " in subduing
chronic, or lingering coughs, bronchial,
throat and lnng affections, for all of which
these agents are recommended by stand

its action upon enfeebled, disordered stom

Glycerine will relieve many cases of pyrosis

There is no doubt of the fart tha
a great horticultural awakening has begun
in the Willamette Valley. While the
special wave of enthnsiai"m"whic:h passed
ovr the vailev lat winter seemed to
subside with the coming of summer, it ie
now evident that there has been an
actual growth of real interest in horticul
tural matters throughout th) year, de.
clares tlie Agriculturist. The attendance
of fruitgrowers at meetings 85 far held
this winter has been unexpectedly large.
The coming meeting of the Oregon State
Horticultuial Society will in all probaoil
ity be attended by a greater number of
fruit growers than have ever yet assem
bled in the Pacific Northwest. Tlie effect
of the meeting will be to intensify interest
in the subject. of improving orchard
methods and increasing the production
of high-grade fruits and nuts in Oregon,
and no portion of the state will b bene
fitted more than the Willamette Valley.

Why Not Use Electric Lights?
Stop scratching matches on j our wall.
Those streaky match, scratches look
mighty bad on anyjwall. But as long aa
you continue to use gas or oil you'ye got
to use matches.
The "matchless light" is the electric
light, a simple twist of the wrist does it.
We are improving and perfecting our
lighting service in this city and can give
better service for less money than ever
in the history of the city.
The cost of wiring has been reduced
until it is within reach of all.
If you would like to know more about
it, call on ns in our new office opposite
the O. J. Black ledge furniture store or
