LIVE AND LET LIVE. Christmas! The word is one of the most treasured in our lan puaee. Around it cling: the happiest memories of childhood days, mingled with the music of the sound is the music of the sleigh-bells in the old home per haps now far away, and the Christmas songs that old and young were wont to sing in uni son on that merriest of days. The season of all seasons when charity, love and kindness are supposed to create an atmosphere higher and purer than that of any other time, yet a season that has come to be dreaded by many a bread-winner as the most try ing time of all the year. The good old Christmas time has. been "modernized" and the changes is not pleasing. Bar ter and trade has taken the place of the Christmas spirit that once made gift giving something de lightlul, and no class suffers so much from the consequent rush and crush of Christmas, as does the clerk behind the counter. Women do not mean to be nn kind; they would indignantly deny the charge of cruelty to their fellow-creatures, but of such they are guilty. The holi day season means double work for the employes in nearly all establishments, and women do the greater part of the Christmas shopping. If ladies agree on nothing else they are apparently unanimous in the idea that this shopping must be done princi pally during the last forty-eight hours before Christmas. With a desplaration born of the determination to get the best, cheapes: and prettist articles in the market, they make a rush during those closing days that drives the clerks half frantic, wears out the nerves of the shop pers, causes the children to be cuffed and scolded, and turns the home into a vertiable inferno for the time being. Then, when the last present is labeled and the last card written, these female shoppers are too weary and too irritable to enjoy the Christmas tarkey, join Tommy in a game of dominoes or greet the long suffering husband with a cheerful smile. Would you be kind, charitable and happy? Would you " do unto others" as you would like to be done by this Christmas? Then do not add to the congest ion of holiday trade at the eleventh hour, but start now. Bay all you wish, but get busy early. The weary clerks will bless you for your thoughttulness, and perhaps when this Christ mas morning dawns you will have enough energy left to join in the good old carol f 1 'Peace on earth; $ood will to men." THE INTERSTATE COMMISSION. A system is being prepared by the Interstate Commerce Com mission to investigate the com bination formed by the many railroads of which E. H. Harri man is the presiding head and manager. This is certainly the 1 - - u: c : 1 j. under one control which hasi ever existed, representing over 23,000 miles ot track. The system controls the Un on Pacific, the Oregon Short Line, the Oregon Railroad and Navi gation Company and the South ern Pacific Company, with all of ft OIe A You will find everything suitable for Holiday giving. We have secured a selection of high class and desirable g:fts and you can safely depend on the quality. You need never feel ashamed ,of any thing you give that you buy here. From now onare holiday buying days, but you are welcome to look, as well as to buy. Make your selections now, we will store them for you and deliver when you say desirable. Suit able, sensible presents for men, women and children. No toys. Nothing to oat. Everything to woar. Ml. Nolan Son. the branches of these several trunk lines. The Commission believes that the combination is similar to that planned and organized under the Northern Securities Company. If such is found to be the case, it is presumed that suits to dis solve the combination will be brought in the United States courts, under the Sherman Anti- Trust Law. Mr. Harriman has certainly been the most active man in all of the worid's history to combine under one system and control so many railroads,- and has expended-fabulous sums of money to ef fect this great combination. Not withstanding this, the greatest shortage of cars exists through out the whole system ever known under any system of transporta tion. Mr. Harrimanjhas spent mil lions upon millions of money to purchase and unite, under his plan, every desirable railroad that he could find for sale, and yet it seems impossible for him to find means to buy new cars to move the rapidly accumulating freight along his roads. Under his management, the urgent demand of the public to move their accumulated products to market receives little response. At the same time active effort is being made by Mr. Harriman to gain control of other roads. The Interstate Commission should be empowered to go into this proposition thoroughly and to require every interstate rail road to furnish cars sufficient to transact the business along the lines of road operated under the system. If this were the case, managers so eager to gather all railroads possible under one control would see to it that the equipment was ample to cany the traffic offered. Banquet and Election.
