Tuesday, advised all republicans
to vote their ticket straight, both
county and state.
Again we beg to ask for in
formation relative to the demo
cratic idea of the length of a term
of office? From what we can
learn, they think it is for lite.

According to the dictum of
the Times man, a republican is
a fool it he don't scratch his
ticket and a democrat is a fool if
he does. How about this?

The Times man asks who Mr.
Grugett is because he vouches
for the honor of Fred C. Peil.
We would like to ask who the
Times man is that he dares to
make a scurrilous insinuation
against Fred?

clerk of- Benton county.
Of this fact all republicans are
assured. You will see.

Strange that A. J. Johnson,
republican candidate . for state
senator, should be making a mis
take by supporting Dr. Withy
combe against Chamberlain for
governor in fact, supporting his
party ticket from first to last.
The Times says Mr. Johnson is
making a gtave mistake, but we
don't believe it.

Republicans are opposed to
long tenure of the same office by
one man. Two consecutive
terms in the same county office,
then get out of the way for some
equally well qualified citizen is
the usual republican practice,
and it is approved by not a few
democrats to whom an official
class is odious. For these rea
sons republicans, and some demo
crats, will not support Mr. Bur
nett for another term in the
sheriffs office.

Republicans are so well satis
fied with the most excellent
qualifications ot their candidate.

are determined to elect him.

Reader, has is occurred to you
that the Times in its last issue
was a "dead ringer" for a dirty
little sheet published to the west
ward of Coryallis? We believe
the same man is editing, both
sheets, but whether He belongs
in Corvallis or Philomath is a
matter of doubt with us.

It is an evil mind that will
harbor an ill thought of Fred C.
Peil, the republican candidate
for the office of sheriff of Benton.
The times slurringly remarks
that "Mr. Peil is a nice young
man." All very true. The
Times, not being an authority on
the higher virtues of men, it is
but natural to presume that some
body must have put in a good
word for Mr. Peil.

It is a shame to steal demo
cratic honors and mottos, we ad
mit. The democrats of Benton
have so long held to the idea
that "To the victors (and the
Times) belong the spoils" that
for republicans to claim the
motto looks like theft to them.
By the way, when it comes to
practicing what thev preach they
have been right in it.

We are in receipt of a most
interesting letter irom Lieutenant
Quinlan, who is now stationed
at Fort Wingate, . New Mexico.
The lieutenant writes of condi
tions in both New Mexico and
Corvallis.

A dirty and contemptible in
sinuation on the honesty of Fred
C. Peil was fathered by the
Times in the last issue. When
elected sheriff of this county Mr.
Peil wiU have no trouble in se
curing bondsmen. Any way,
we'll back the honesty of Mr. Peil
against . that of the man who
made the unwarranted and low
attack upon him.

One of the biggest jobbers in
Benton county is attempting to
beat into republican craniums a
continuation of lies to the effect
that they jobbed themselves when
they nominated their ticket. The
merit of the men on the republi
can ticket is evidently beyond
the appreciation of the poor little
thing decrying them. Taken
altogether, don't they compare
pretty favorably with the demo
cratic candidates? They were
placed in nomination by the re
publican party of Bentoa and will
be supported by republicans.
The democrats need, badly too,
at that, republican votes which
they will not receive.

So wedded to long terms of
office are some democratic spokes
men that thev claim it a virtue
that many years ago they kept
a republican on the roost when
many of his political friends
thought it time for him to hop
down. Of course they refer to
this ancient history for the pur
pose of gaining republican votes
for their long term candidates,

Republicans voters must be
vigilant. Not for years have the
democrats had their faces so sure
ly set towards the woods. They
are desperate and will resort to
all sorts of tricks and schemes
to deceive and mislead you. Al
ready they have planned some of
these and are meditating others.
Let your answer be to all these a
straight vote for the entire tick

The republican candidates will
hold a rally at Philomath to
day at 2 130 p. m. At this time
the voters will be addressed by
the candidates and such well
known and able men as E. H.
Bel kaap and J. H.Edwards. S.
C. Spencer of Portland, secretary
of the republican state, central
committee, will make the princi
pal address.

WOODWARD AND TAXES.
Some Facts Jor Benton County
Voters to Remember.
The exhibit of the county
finance published in April, 1898,
preceding Judge Woodward's
entrance upon the duties of coun
ty judge the J"ly following
showed the indebtedness of Ben
ton county to $51,519.83. The
financial exhibit published the
April preceding his exit irom
office showed the county indebt
edness to be $4,668.78; a reduc
tion of $46,851.05 during his
term.
During this time money was
expended liberally on roads, the
ferry was purchased, rock crush
ers and road graders added to
county equipment, 'bridges re
built and new ones added.
Taxes were low, too. How
does this look to the tax-payers of
Benton? The following letter
from a solid tax-paying farmer
should have weight with these
voting for judge:
Ed. Gazette: Permit me to
make a statement to the tax-payers
of Benton county showing the
difference in dollars and cents
between democratic and republi
can management of county af
fairs. A comparison of tax re
ceipts during Judge Woodward's
administration with those of later
democratic times will show that
Mr. Woodward is a very safe man
tor the tax-payer.
Under Judge Woodward's ad
ministration my taxes for 1899
were $48.33; for 1900, $45 .42;
for 1901; $40.47; for 1902, $49.
97, making a total of $184.19
for the tour years. Under Judge
Watters, a democrat, my taxes
were: For 1903, $60.71; for
1904, $79.23; for 1905, $78.06;
for 1906, $83.08, making a total
of $301.08. Does this not tell a
story? Taxpayer.

lican nominee for county re
corder, is a young man, born,
raised and educated in Benton
county, who is asking for the
honor of being Benton's next
rocorder. His capability to han-

die the work of the office no one
questions. His record as a stu
dent, as a teacher and as a citi
zen has alwavs been clean and
honorable. Mr. Newton's nomi
nation on the republican ticket
is an honor to the party, and the
news of his election on June 4th
by a good round majority will be
most gladly received by all who
have ever known him.

I understand that it is being
circulated in some parts of the
county that T. T. Vincent, the
republican nominee for county
clerk, crowded me out of the race
for that office. I desire to say
that all such reports are absolute
ly and wholly false.

Able and Worthy.
No man in Benton county is
more capable than Fred C. Peil,
the republican candidate for
sheriff. Not only is he capable,
but he is most worthy. He is a
steady young man with a wife
and two children to support and
his many good qualities entitle
him to the vote of every repubh
can in the county.
Not in many years have the
republicans had so capable a man
selected for this office and it is
their duty to support him vigor-

ously. It is not enough to go
and vote for Mr. Peil; speak a
good word for him wherever you
can.
Never mind about the shady
insinuation cast at his honesty,
but consider the source from
which it comes. When elected
sheriff of this county Mr. Peil
will be amply able to give bonds,
the same as any other county
officer, be the bonds what they
may. The republican party
stands sponsor for Fred, and 'the
republican party will elect him.
Republicans will be his bonds
men. Here is a prince of good fel
lows, of unusual clerical ability,
who will do all the work of the
sheriffs office without cost to the
county for deputy hire, a staunch
republican, a man among men
do him justice and he will prove
an honor to those electing him.
Mr. Peil was born in Kansas.
He was educated at Bethany col
lege and No nial Institute at
Lindsborg, Kansas. He is 33
years of age and has been in Ore
gon 13 years, more than four in
Benton county. He taught school

A Moral Degenerate.
The would-be republican in
private life and democrat for
spoils, the editor-in-chief of a
rag glib at misrepresentation,
charges that the Philomath quar
tette had been turned down.
According to the creature's own
statements to prominent repub
licans in Corvallis he is getting
"the small sum of $150 to sup
port Messrs. Moses and Burnett
and other democrats."
He had the information that
he bad been offered $150 by
democrats to use as a lever to
force republicans to bid higher for
his services, stating that "it was
up to them." The republican
central committee refused to be
bled for any sum whatever by
any such contemptible cur.
It has yet to be proved that
man who registers as a republi
can and participates in the pri
mary election is traitor enough
to the men he helps place in
nomination to be influenced to
turn them down by the persual
ot a sheet so vile. Republicans
can easily see from whence this
contemptible creature receives
his inspiration to assist democra
cy. One is lenient in stating
that he is a moral degenerate.
