Those who believe that the
principles and policies of the re

HIS APPOINTMENTS.

at Portland instances Governor
Chamberlain's appointments as
strong reasons why ' he finds
staunch support outside of the
party. He appointed Judge
Harris to the additional judge
ship in this district because
Judge Hamilton is a democrat.
He filled a vacancy on the su
preme bench by appointing a
democrat because the two other
judges are republicans.
It is probable he appointed a
democrat to the U. S. senate be
cause the other senator is a re
publican. The Governor knows that one
of the most senseless and ground
less "scares" is the fear that
our Judiciary is in any danger
whatever of becoming partisan.
He knows, too, that in this
district are eminently well quali
fied democratic lawyers, who,
because of their long party ser
vice, supplemented by their fit
ness, should have received the
compliment of appointment.
If he does not know, he is like
ly to learn, ere long, that he
would assuredly have gained
more friends and also more cer
tainly retained those he had by
appointing a democrat to the
judgeship and a republican to the
senatorsnip. ne governor is
not the first actor- who has mad,
the mistake of playing to the
galleries when he would better
have kept in his lines.

In the early sixties it was usually the
duty of a practicing physician to ride
many miles every day on his regular
round of visits upon nts patients. ; In
those days a young man who had received
a splendid medical training in one of the
best medical colleges of that day was ac
