GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATES.
iy things are happening
these days to incline one to the
idea that there is a tendency to
ward centralization of govern
mental power in the United
States. The latest movement in
this direction is certainly inter
esting, or will be for some, as it
U a unique proposition. It is an
investigation of the causes of so
many divorces.
Ju-t why the webs which Dan
Cupid spent so many hours of
labor and love to weave should
have been cut and slashed so
ruthlessly by various judges
throjjhout the land is what the
government proposes to find out.
T.ie desire for this data is based
upon the idea of more uniform
divorce laws in the various
states- In order that tha gov
ernment may accomplish its pur
pose cler'zs will visit every state
in the union and copy the di
vorce records of every court
within said state. In fact,
work has already been
done under governmental orders
in some of the eastern states,
and a dozen or more are expect
ed to arrive in Oregon sometime
during the present month.
iUuicnoman will be the first
Oregon county to have her di
vorce court records investigated
and the investigation will cover
a period of twenty years back.
All features of the various suits
for divorce, whether "justordi
l.ary" or sensational in the ex
treme, are to be published in the
reports of the Department of
Commerce and Labor. The in
vestigation was started upon
the recommendation of Presi
dent Roosevelt in one of his mes
sages to congress.
We fancy that after the publi
cation of these suits for divorce
begins the reports of the Depart
ment of Commerce and Labor
will be read regularly, early and
late, and by all classes, even by
intellectual people. It is safe to
predict tha . the first few edicions
will ran short but the depart
ment will soon "get next." "
Thousand Nights' Entertain
ment!" Here is promised data
which shall cause the glor es of
th-s "Arabian Nights" to fade
into insignificance. Whether in
compatibility of temper, the use
o i.itoxicating liquors or infideli
ty shall prove the reason for the
suit i'or divorce most frequently
unearthed by the investigating
committee remains to be seen.
It will be interesting to learn
whether men or women are the
m:re frequent petitioners for
escape from the yoke that binds.
SAYS NEVER AGAIN.
Villiam Randolph Hearst says
he's had enough. If he sticks
to this sentiment there will be a
feeling of intens-3 relief exper
ienced by the masses irrespec
tive of political affiliations and
echo will answer far and near,
"Jood enough!" Willie is in
command of scant respect at the
hands of his fellows, even
among those who know him best.
in California, the state where
he made his home for so many
years, and where he has great
properties, he is blessed with a
large army of decriers. Willie is
politically dead, but he died hard
and non3 to soon. Had one
counseled with his nostrils he
wcild have declared- that pol-
itical death has gathered the boy
to his Fathers some time since.
0 January 3 Willie Randolph
sang his swan sons, which reads
as follows:
"I myself am not and will not again be
a candidate for any office, but I am aa
muc i interested aa ever and even more
interested than ever in the promotion
Lagua. It -twin t me that e ran a
feel aau'sfaction ni on what has been i
is bei nji ac iomplicbed. And it seems
me, as patriotic citizens, we need n
care particularly hat individuals pa
the principle and reform ioto effect
long as they acta ally be accomplished fo
the benefit of our fellow citizens.
"I believe that the league will .' go for
ward to farther aid batter achieve men ta
and I heartily Cer yoa, my friends, ui
beet services as a fellowworker to those
ends."
From the above we learn that
the Independence League is to
receive tha heritance of "good
will," that the singer of the song
of the dyin? swan is going to
strain himself in assisting the
League in placing its mystic
mantle here and there indiscrim
inately for the good of "our fel
low citizens." Taking into con
sideration that because Willie
dragged the League about by the
tail he finally forced it to nomi
nate him for governor of New
York, thus making it a party to
his political death, it will be seen
that there is in his latest state
ments to the public much evi
dence of forgiveness on his part.
Rest in peace!
OF THE LORD" TALKS
Tells Court How She Receives
Messages From on High.
In Portland the wild ravings of
the "Holy . Howlers" still go
on, and the Juvenile Court he trd
from the youngest convert of the
faith a most remarkable story a
few days ago, which is related in
the Journal thus:
Captain Bailey told the court
how he had found the child a few
days ago trembling from the ex
citement of a religious frenzv,
snapping her fingers as she held
her hands high in the air and
giving utterance to an unintelli
gible jumfie of words that re
minded him of the first babblings
of babyhood.
"Tell me what you were Ow
ing and what this all means,"
said the judge as he took the lit
tle girl by the hand.
"Well I was receiving a mes
sage from theLord," answered
the child, ber big, dark eyes
looking straight into the judge's.
"And how do little girls like
you receive messages from the
Lord?" queried the court. "And
what were all -these strange mut
terings did you speak more
than one language?"
v Yes sir, I was speaking Chi
nese, German, French and Portu
guese," came the astounding
answer with the studied accuracy
and unwavering' expression of a
student ot the catechism.
Bven the judge was nonplus
sed at the child's statement. He
hesitated a moment before ask
ing the next question: "Do you
understand all of these lang
uages?" "No sir," she replied, "but
mama told me." - 1
The pretty little girl whore
fice and features ladiated intelli
gence, then told the court how
she and her mother had left their
home in Los Angeles in response
to a call from the Lord to act as
missionaries.
"Did you set
the Lord, too?"
Frazer. "No,"
that call from
asked Judge
she answeied,
'but mamma did, and she alwajs
takes me with her."
The mother was ordered to
keep the child away from the
meetings, or the proper author
ities will take the little one in
charge. ,

A Most Valuable Agent.
The glycerine employed in Dr. Pierce's
medicines greatly enhances the medicinal
properties which it extracts from native
medicinal roots and holds in solution
much better than alcohol would. It also
possesses medicinal properties of its own,
being a valuable demulcent, nutritive,
antiseptic and antlfermont. It adds
greatly to the efficacy of the Black Cherry
bark, Bloodroot, oidch Seal root, Stone
root and Queen's root, contained in
"Golden Medical Discovery " in subduing
chronic, or lingering coughs, bronchial,
throat and lung affections, for all of which
these agents are recommended by stand
ard medical authorities.
In all cases where there is a wasting
away of flesh, loss of appetite, with weak
stomadh, as in the early stages of con
sumption, there can be no doubt that gly
cerineacts as a valuable nutritive ar.d

and bringing about a healthy condition
of the wf.ile system. Of course, it must
not be ejiMcted to work miracles. It will

it is hot so effective. IT is in the lingering
hang-on coughs, or those of long standing,
even when accompanied by bleeding from
lungs, that it has performed its most
marvelous cures.
Prof. Finley Eilingwood, M. D., of Ben
nett Med. College, Chicago, says of gly
cerine: "In dyspepsia it sferves an excellent purpose.
Holding a fixed quantity of the peroxide of
hydrogen in solution, it is one of the best
manufactured products of the present time ia
its action upon enfeebled, disordered stom
achs, especially if there is ulceration or ca
tarrhal gastritis (catarrhal inflammation ot
stomach), it is a most efficient preparat ion.
Glycerine will relieve many cases of pyrosis
(heartburn) and excessive gastric (stomach!
acidity." ';. . ,1

There is no doubt of the fVt tha
a great horticultural awakening has begnn
in the Willamette Valley. While the
Bpecial wave of enthusiaim'wbich passed
ov.r the vallev last winter seemed to
subside with the coining of summer, it ie
now evident that there has been aa
actual growth of real interest in horticul
tural matters throughout thj veir, de.
clares the Agriculturist. The attendance
of fruitgrowers at meeting? sj far held
tois winter has been dnexoectetily large.
The coming meeting of the Oregon State
Hortiauituial Society will in all probabil
ity be attended by a greater number of
fruit growers thau have ever yet assem
bled in the Pacific Northwest. The effect
of the meeting will beto intensify interest
in the subject of improving orchard
methods, and increasing the production
of high-grade fruits and uutB in Oregon,
and no portion of the state will b bene
fitted more than tha Willamette Valley.

HOVEL CURE FOR COLDS
Healing Medication that is Breathe J, giving
quick relief.
The fact that many, people right in
Corvallis cough and hawk and snuii'le for
days and weeks after they have been
treating a cold with the usual stomach
dosing, shows how valueless are the ord
inary cough and cold cares.
The right way to cure a cold in the
head, or a cough and irritation in the
bronchial tubes, is by breathing Hyomei
medicated air from the neat pocket in
haler that comes with every outfit. Take
a few breaths in this way, and immediate
relief will be noted. The medication goes
right to the spot where the disease germs
are aud renders them harmless.
Graham & Wells give an absolute
guarantee with every Hyomei outfit tby
se.l that il it does not give satisfaction
the money will be refunded. The com
plete Hooruei outfit costs but $1.00,

Why Not Use Electric Lights?
Stop scratching matuues on jour wall.
Those streaky match! scratches look
mighty bad on anyjwall. But as long as
yon continue to use gas or oil yoa'ye got
to use matches.
The "matchless light" is the electric
light, a simple twist of the wrist does it.
We are improving and perfecting our
lighting service in this city and can give
better service for less money than ever
in the history of the city.
The cost of wiring has been reduced
until it is within reach of all.
If you would like to know more about
it, call on us in oar new office opposite
the O. J. Blackledge furniture store or
