Notwithstanding the advance cost of cotton and all cot
ton goods we aim to make this the greatest sale of depend
able daintily trimmed nndernmslins that have ever been
placed on the counters of any Corvallis store. How can we
give you such values you ask. Because we sell such im
mense quantities that we buy our garments at a much lower
price than smaller dealers who cannot use such large lots.
These garments bear the label of the National Consumers'
League which is a guarantee that they are made in light,
clean, airy, wholesome factories, etc.

1' There came near being a hot
time in Grant Elgin's harness shop
Friday night from all accounts. It
seems that Grant has been in the
habit of keeping a box filled with
saw dust near the stove in his place j
of business to do service as a cuspi
dor for friends who gathered there
of stormy days and swapped ex
periences. It must have been that
someone dropped a well lighted
cigar stub in the box ju6t before
the closing hour, for later on Dave
Osburn discovered considerable of a
blaze and went in and put it out.
The cuspidor was on fire. In order
to get in Mr. Osburn was obliged
to force the front doors. It was
lucky matters were no worse. k

day morning received a ten-cent
piece from Thomas C. Gray, the
Sumpter miner who originated the
Alice Roosevelt dowry scheme. Tbe
coin was enclosed in a letter saying
that it was a contribution to ihe
dowry for ''Our Alice." The orig
inal plans were that the contribu
tions should be sent to the State
Treasurer, but since Treasurer
Moore declined to serve as custo
dian, Gray evidently thought to
transfer the honor and responsibili
ty to the Secretary of State. Mr.
Dunbar also declined the honor,
and returned the ten cents to Mr.
Gray with advert to that' effect.
The dowry scheme has met unan
imous disapproval here. These
officials have both taken the proper
view of this crack-brained scheme.

FOR SALE
No Dogs Allowed.
The following story is going
the rounds at the expense of Con
ductor Webster of the Corvallis
Express: t
The train had just left Stark
street, and the conductor was
making his first round, when he
observed a small white dog with
a bushy tail and bright black
eyes sitting ccsily on the seat be
side a young lady so handsome
that it made his fatherly old
heart, roll over. " But duty was
duty, and he remaiked in his
most deprecatory manner:
''I'm very sorry but it's against
the rules to have dogs in the
passenger cars."
"Oh my! is that so?" and
she turned up two lovely brown
eyes at him beseechingly. "What
in the world will I do?"
"We'll put him in the baggage
car and he'll be just as happy as
a robin in Spring."
"What! put my nice white dog
in a dirty baggage car?"
"I'm awfully sorry, miss, but
the rules ot the company are in
flexible." "I think it's awfully mean,
and I know somebody will steal
it," and she showed a half notion
to cry that nearly broke the con
ductors heart, but he was firm
and sang out to the brakeman:
"Here Andy, take this dog
over into the baggage car, and
tell' em to take the best kind of
care of him."
The young lady pouted, but
the brakeman reached over and
picked the canine up as tenderly
as if it were a two-weeks-old
baby, but as he did so a strange
expression came over his face
and he said hastily to the con
ductor:
"Here, you just hold him for
a minnte," and he trotted out
at the car door and held onto the
brakewheel.
The conductor no sooner had
his hands on the dog than he
looked for a hole to fall
through.
"wn wn wny, tnis is a
worsted dog!"
"Yes sir," said the miss'de
murely. "Didn't you know
that?"
He laid the dog down on the
owner's lay, and walked out on
the platform, where he stood
half an hour in the cold, trying
to think of a hymn tune to suit
the worst sold man on the South
ern Pacific road.
