TELLS HOW TO LIVE LONG.
London Professor Gives Twelve Stat
utes Which Must Be Followed If
Longevity Is Desired.
Prof. Boyd Laynard, of Lon
don, England's leading author of
works on hygiene, gives 12 rules
in the New York World, for those
who desire to live a healthy and
long life:
1. Avoid every kind of excess,
especially in eating and drinking.
2. Do not live to eat. Select
those aliments most suitable for
nourishing the body and not those
likely to impair it.
3. Look upon fresh air as your
best friend. Inhale its life-giving
oxygen as much as possible dur
ing 'the day, while at night sleep
with the bedroom window open at
the top for a space of at least four
or five inches. Follow this out
Cven in the depth of winter. It is
one of the great secrets of long
life.
4. Be clean both in mind and
body. "Cleanliness is next to god
liness." It is a fortification
against disease.
5. Worry not nor grieve. Thi3
advice may seem but cold philos
ophy and to be easier to give than
to follow; nevertheless, I have
known persons of a worrying dis
position almost entirely to break
themselves of it by a simple ef
fort of the will. Worry kills.
6. Learn tb love work and hate
indolence. The lazy man never
becomes a centenarian.
7. Have a hobbv. A man with a
hobby will never die of senile de
t :; y. He has always something to
o:-cupy either mind or body; there
fore they remain fresh'and vigor
ous.
8. Take regular exercise in the
open air, but avoid over exertion.
9. Keep regular, hours, and in
sure sufiicient sleep.
10. Beware of passion. Remem
ber that every outbreak shortens
life to a certain degree, while occa
sionally it is fatal.
11'. Have an object in life. A
hv.m who has no purpose to live
f:r rarely lives long. .
12. Keek a good partner in life,
but not too earlv.

PLANTS OBEY WILL OF MAN
Praise Will Raise Them to Ecstatic
Joy While Blame Causes
Wilting.
Now that scientists have dem
onstrated that metals, which we
have been taught belong to the
catalogue of inorganic sub
stances, can be poisoned and. rer
stored by antidotes, can be over
worked and refreshed by a period
of rest, and otherwise respond to
many of the same influences to
which living things are subject, it
is not impossible to believe the
statement that flowers exhibit
sensibilities not unlike those of
human beings and other of the
higher animals, says the Chicago
Tribune. Recent experiments
prove that plants have in some
cases far finer sensibilities than
many modern mortals, since a
word of praise will, it is stated,
raise them to ecstatic joy and ex
pansion, while blame will so crush
their feelings that they die, brok
en hearted.
Col. Andraede, in the account
of his life in Mexico, tells flu pt.
traordinary story of the will pow
er exercised over plants and the
results. He is an ardent lover of
flowers, and, possessing strong
njpnouc iorce, the idea occurred
to him one day to test the s
of his will on the vegetable king
dom.
He selected two flowprimr
plants of the same kind, both in, I
equally good health and just
bursting into generous bloom.
btanding near one, he put forth
aij his mental will power, bidding
it to obey him in every way. lie
commanded it to develop courage
and sturdiness, to rejoice in its
health and strength, and to devel
op its sweetness and Luty to
the utmost of its power.
livery day-he lingered near the
plant for a considerable time, giv
ing it all the moral encourage
ment possible, praising it, flatter
ing it, coaxing it, and, in fact,
making absolute love to it. -
The plant responded in the most
remarkable manner to this stimu
lating treatment, producing finer
blossoms than had ever before
been seen of the sort, and send
ing forth, as thoujrh in erratitr.Af
a richer, rarer perfume. Indeed,
it seemed absolutely to become
personified, and to wish to attain
a state of absolute perfection for
its master's sake. It actually ap
peared to recognize him, and
seemed to lean toward him at his
approach.
On the other hand the colonel
treated the second plant in an op
posite manner. He disparaged it,
scolded it, sneered at its flowers,
and was altogether so cruel and
unkind that iu three '''ays the bare
ly opened blossoms began to
wither and within a month the
plant actually withered away and
died as if of a broken heart.
From this the colonel deduces
that plants, etc., may be, guided
md governed in their growth and
levelopment by that animal mag
netism which we all possess to
some degree. It must be ex
plained that both plants received
scrupulously the same garden
ing care and that the colonel never
touched either.

FIX A SOUTHERN BARBECUE
Explanation ot This Innovation in
True Down-South Stylo Shots
a Delicacy.
The way we fix for a barbecue
!s to begin to get ready the day
Defo'. The meat is roastin' all .
aight, says Outine. , We, have
plenty of different kinds shote,
:air, kid and goat and we roast
'em whole. A trench is dug and
aak bark coals put in. Then sticks
ire laid across for the shote and
)ther creatures to rest on. Some
white man has this in charge, but
the niggers keep the fires goin' an'
do the basting and the rough
work. The next dav evervbodv
omes. There's a detail to do the
carving, and we all step up and get
what we want and go and get
down bv some tree to eat it. Of
course there's potatoes and corn
meal lightbread and pickles and
cake, and there's ice cream, and
there's pure, genuine coffee that
the old ladies make in abundance!
Then there's fried chicken if any
one is fastidious enouch to want
it, and some enterprising fellow
is likely to bring a dozen bottles
of beer and invite 'his special
friends out to his buggy to drink
it. But the best thing to my think
in' is the shote. A man hasn't cot
iany part in the resurrection until
He's eaten barbecued shote.
