FUN IN COOKING SLYLY, j
Old Lady Dearly Loves to Indulge in
Culinary Art in Guest Boom
of Gotham Hotel.
"Stolen fruit is reputed to be
sweet," remarked an observer and
philosopher who earns his daily
bread behind the desk of an up
town hotel, to a New York Tribune
reporter, "but larceny never in
jected one-tenth part of the sac
charine into the product of the
vine or the fig tree that is enjoyed
by some of our veteran guests of
the feminine gender who find a
way to violate a rule of the house
on the quiet by taking to them
selves an inhibited privilege.
One old lady arrived from the
country just before the snow be
gan to fly to resume the apart
ments she has occupied for so
many consecutive years that she
always employs the term 'my
rooms' when she alludes to them.
Her baggage came a day ahead of
her, as a familiar harbinger of
winter, and besides the trunks,
were assorted packages so care
fully wrapped and carefully con
signed that a novice would never
have guessed the contents of them.
Cooking in the guest rooms is, of
course, a flagrant violation of an
edict as old as the hotel, but this
old lady dearly loves to cook a bite
.to eat or brew a bit of tea in the
seclusion of her own apartment,
and, while I opened none of the
packages the aroma of one of them
was a breath from Ceylon, and
another as surely suggested the
drink berry of Brazil, and my head
for a football if two other parcels
undone to the core would not have
yielded the dairy and poultry
products of a Long Island farm.
Economy as the child of necessity
does not explain this planning for
clandestine cookery- the woman
is wealthy, but she evidently
chuckles to herself every time she
does her little gas stove stunt
without, being caught in the act.
And she is not the only daughter of
Eve who manifests the disposition
to hoodwink the hotel man,"
ART IN FINDING SPRINGS.
Indians and Frontiersmen Can Lo-
eate Source of Water When
Tenderfoot Cannot. '
There is undoubtedly a practical
art of discovering springs. In
dians or frontiersmen can find
water in the desert when a "tender
foot" cannot, says Casiser's Mag
azine. Mexicans and experienced
prospectors can similarly find ore.
These arts consist mainly in the
recognition, of superficial signs
which escaps the ordinary obser
ver. It Is hot necessary that the oper
ator should consciously note thesf
signs separately and reason upon
them. No doubt he frequently does
so,' though he may not give away
the secret of his method to others.
But in many instances he recog-.
nizes, by association and memory,
the presence of a group of indica
tions, great or small, which he has
repeatedly found to attend springs
or ore deposits. This skill, due to
habit, is often almost unerring for
a given limited district, but under
new conditions it breaks down.
Old miners from California or
Australia have often made in
other regions the most foolish and
hopeless attempts to find gold be
cause they thought this or that
place "looked just like" some other
place in which they had mined suc
cessfully. V -.'.
Apart from the magnetic miner
als there is no proof that ore de
posits exhibit their presence and
nature by any attraction or other
active force. With regard to wa
ter, however, there may be an ac
tion affecting the temperature and
moisture of the overlying surface.
Even here, however, it seems mow
likely that such effects are mani
fested visibly to a close observer
rather than by direct affection of
his, nervous or muscular system.
The favorite fields for water di
viners are regions in which water
is abundant,""- but not-gathered
upon given horizons of impermea
ble strata underlying, porous
rocks.

Bone Cancer.
Some time last year W. O.
Trine, physical director at OAC,
wai booked in the face by a cow.
,The animal's horn struck him on
the chin a"nd injured the bone.
He was not bothered at the time
to any extent and paid but little
attention to the matter.
Months passed and until about
the first of the present year he
was not bothered to any great de
gree. But during the past few
months trouble developed rapid
ly. ' He consulted local physi
cians and submitted to an oper
ation or two at their hands. His
condition grew worse and recent
ly he saw Portland surgeons and
physicians about his case. '-
All told, he submitted to about
ten operations. In spite of every
thing done in his behalf he grew
rapidly worse. Finally he was
informed that he was suffering
from bone cancer. This he re
fused to believe and a piece of
hesh was cut irom the inner side
f his lower lip and put under a.
poweriul glass and be was allow
ed to inspect to his own satisfac
tion. He was then satisfied that
his condition was critical; One
Portland specialist on cancer was
willing to operate, but told him
that it would be necessary to re
move the entire lower jaw and
much flesh from the throat in or
der to completely remove the dis
ease. This he was1 loath to have
done, as he felt that he would not
survive the operation and his con
dition if he did survive would be
worse than death.
Another specialist recommend
ed a man in San Francisco who
destroys cancer without resorting
to the kni:e. bo he came home
from Portland last Monday to ar
range for a trip to San Francisco
to see this specialist in whose
hands !ies what is Considered his
only chance for life.
Accompanied by his wife, Mr.
Trine started tor San Francisco
on Tuesday. During his absence
O. A. Tozier and wife will occu
py Mr.Trine's house and look af
ter his things. This case is cer
tainly one to excite the compas-
sion 01 an, as it is a battle in
which Mr. Trine's life hangs in
the balance. -
