FINDS SHORTAGE.
Those who have been working
on the books of E. P. Greffoz
find him short in the sum of
$1,875.72. The committee ap
pointed have been at work four
or five nights and have not com
pleted their labors and it is
thought-that the amount of the
shortage will approximate $2,000.
The shortage is found in the va
rious items of sewer money. Five
sewers are not recorded on his
books at all, either paid or un
paid, and it is not possible at the
present time to tell how much
has been paid on these five sew
ers.. It is thought, however, that I
all, or nearly all, has been paid,
and that the people hold Mr
Greffoz's receipt for the money.
The books are s in an awful
muddle and the wonder is that
some errors were riot detected
heretofore, as every year the
finance committee is supposed
to have examined the books. At
any rate each . year the books
have been marked "OK."
It appear that somebody is go
ing to be the loser on this propo
sition in the sum of about $2,000.
Who will stand the loss? Will
an attempt be made to have the
parties through whose property
the sewers pass pay twice? or
will the city stand the loss ? At
present, in the face of our finan
cial condition the city is in no
position to assume this indebted
ness, nor is it just to expect prop
erty owners to pay twice for the
installation of their sewers. It
is likely that a special meeting
of the council will soon be called
to; deliberate on what is best to
do. ""V' :
Eureka Cadets.
The Eureka (Calif.) cadets ar
rived 1 a this city Wednesday af
ternoon, having marched from
Harrisburg that day. They are
enroute to the Exposition at Port
land, where they expect to spend
a week. "'.'..-. ,
- There, are about 60 boys and
some seven or eight men in the
eorps. They left Eureka, Jane
12' and were just exact' y one
month reaching this citv. The
distance from Eureka to Portland
on the route they are traveling is
310 miles. They expect to make
Portland next Thursday. . From
here they go to Albany today and
thence down the East Side to the
metropolis.
After their stay there, they go
back to H'.imboldt bay by. boat.
The boys range from six years of
age on- up to manhood. They
will have, marched the entire dis
tance from Eureka to Portland.
Since leaving their homes, they
Eave suffered but little indisposi
tion. When they first started on
their journe)', some of them were
bothered for a time with sore
feet but at present they are all
sound and well and ishow plainly
that caiiip life agrees with them".
Wlrlc here they were encamped
on the vacant lot just back of the
laundry. ,
Last evening they were to give
an entertainment in- the Opera
House and the indications were
that they would have a- good
Souse. They are a splendidly
brbaved lot ef boys and are a
credit to the city from whence
they came. This will be an out
ing that they will all remember
(o the last dav of their lives. . -

I suffered with falling and con
gestion of the womb, with severe
pains through the groins. - I suf
fered terribly at the time of men
struation, had blinding headaches
and rushing of blood to the brain.
What to try I knew notjfor it
seemed that liad tried all and
failed,- but I had never tried Wine
of Cardui, that blessed remedy for
sick women. I. found it pleasant
to takfr and soon knew that I had
the right medicine. New blood
seemed to course through my veins
and after using eleven bottles I
was a well woman.
- Mrs. Bush is now in perfect
health because she took Wine of
Cardui for menstrual disorders,
bearing down pains and blinding
headaches when all other remedies
failed to bring her relief. Any
sufferer may secure health by tak
ing Wine of Cardui in her home.
The first bottle convinces the pa
tient she is on the road to health,
