lace recently called attention to
the fact that an American civil
engineer, Boyd Ehe, with a party
of young college men, had in four
months made an important dis
covery in connection with the
Panama canal which the French
engineers had failed to make in
15 years.
It was no less than the finding
of the sources of the Chagres river
and of a means of diverting that
stream to the Pacific ocean, there
by effecting a saving of $20,000,
000, which may be devoted to ex
cavating a sea level waterway.
Mr. Wallace has well stated that
the far reaching importance of the
discovery made by this party, for
to control the Chagres is to build
the canal. The enormous fresh
ets of this river were difficulties
with which De Lesseps' engineers
were unable to cope successful!',
but this work was done in a few
months by the engineering corps
under the charge of Mr. Ehle.
Boyd Ehle was born in 18G6 at
Fort Plain, N. Y. He received his
early education in the public
schools and at Clinton Liberal in
stitute. Entering the class of 'S'i
at Cornell university, he wa,s
graduated in civil enginering with
a high standing.

Legend of Spain Tells How It Was
First Used at a Wedding in
That Country.
The wearing of orange blossom '
at a wedding is accounted for in
various ways. Among other
stories is the following popular le
gend from Spain: An African
king presented a Spanish king
with a magnificent orange tree,
whose creamy, waxy blossoms
and wonderful fragrance excited
the admiration of the whole court.
Many begged in vain for a branch
of the plant and a foreign ambas
sador was tormented by a desirt
to introduce so great a curiosity to
his native land. He used every
possible means to accomplish his
purpose, but all his efforts com
ing to naught he gave up in de
spair. The fair daughter of the couri
gardener was loved by a youn?
artisan, but she lacked the dowrj
which the family considered nec
essary to a bride. One day, chanc
ing to break off a spray of orangt
blossom, the gardener thought
lessly gave it to his daughter.
