STUDENTS SAVE EIG SUM.
Collegians, fcy Finding Source of

Engineer Tells Tale.
Chief Engineer John F. Wal
lace recently called attention to
the fact that an American civil
engineer, Boyd Ehe, with a party
of young college men, had in four
months made an important dis
covery in connection with the
Panama canal which the French
engineers had failed to make in
15 years.
It was no less than the finding
of the sources of the Chagres river
and of a means of diverting that
stream to the Pacific ocean, there
by effecting a saving of $20,000,
000, which may be devoted to ex
cavating a sea level waterway.
Mr. Wallace has well stated that
the far reaching importance of the
discovery made by this party, for
to control the Chagres is to build
the canal. The enormous fresh
ets of this river were difficulties
with which De Lesseps' engineers
were unable to cope successful!',
but this work was done in a few
months by the engineering corps
under the charge of Mr. Ehle.
Boyd Ehle was born in 18G6 at
Fort Plain, N. Y. He received his
early education in the public
schools and at Clinton Liberal in
stitute. Entering the class of 'S'i
at Cornell university, he wa,s
graduated in civil enginering with
a high standing.
After about three years spent
in railroad construction in Texas.
Indian territory, New Mexico an.I
Colorado he went with Chief En
gineer Menocal to Nicaragua and
.emained there until 1893, return
ing in 1897 with the Walker com
mission to take charge of tliL
Oarien survey.
Mr. Ehle was employed on im
portant work on the Erie canal f or
i short time, and also at Detroit
in connection with the exceeding
ly important local engineering
problems now under considera
tion by certain railroads. But
,vhen he received a summons to
Panama, although it meant pain

TALE OF ORANGE BLOSSOM
Legend of Spain Tells How It Was
First Used at a Wedding in
That Country.
The wearing of orange blossom '
at a wedding is accounted for in
various ways. Among other
stories is the following popular le
gend from Spain: An African
king presented a Spanish king
with a magnificent orange tree,
whose creamy, waxy blossoms
and wonderful fragrance excited
the admiration of the whole court.
Many begged in vain for a branch
of the plant and a foreign ambas
sador was tormented by a desirt
to introduce so great a curiosity to
his native land. He used every
possible means to accomplish his
purpose, but all his efforts com
ing to naught he gave up in de
spair. The fair daughter of the couri
gardener was loved by a youn?
artisan, but she lacked the dowrj
which the family considered nec
essary to a bride. One day, chanc
ing to break off a spray of orangt
blossom, the gardener thought
lessly gave it to his daughter.
Seeing the coveted prize in the
girl's hair the wily ambassador of
fered her a sum sufficient for the
dowry, provided she gave him a
branch and said nothing about it.
Her marriage was soon celebrat
ed, and on her way to the altar, in
grateful remembrance of the
source of all her happiness, sb
secretly broke off another bit o
the lucky tree to adorn her hair.
Whether the poor court garden
er lost his head in consequence c.
his daughter's treachery the le
gend does not relate, but man;,
lands now know the wonderfu
tree, and ever since that weddin.
day orange blossom has been coi.
sidered a fitting adornment for a
bride.

FOOD THAT HELPS GROWTH
New Chemical Production Shows Mar
velous Results in Promoting
Size of Human Beiis.
Several doctors and chemists
have lately been studying a form
of food which is stated to show
marvelous results in promoting
the- growth of human beings and
animals generally.
Experiments have been made
upon creatures so diverse as tad
poles, guinea pigs, puppies, rats,
and young chickens, and in every
case it was found that the animals
fed upon this food grew faster,
and attained a larger growth,
than those reared in the ordinary
way.
There seems, therefore, .' to be
no doubt that children brought
up on this kind of nutriment
would far outstrip in size those
fed on other diet. '
Andnow,their curiosity roused,
readers may ask: "What is this
wonderful food?" Well, it is
nothing more or less than the
yolks of eggs. Their effect in pro
moting growth is due to a sub
stance which they contain, and
which scientists know as "leci
thin." It develops the bodily
structure, especially the bones,
and it is also brain food by virtue
of the phosphorus it contains.
