Mrs. J. F. Yates went to Port
land, Saturday, to remain for some
ten days, during which time she
will visit the Exposition. Mr. Yates
expects to join her shortly.
We acknowledge the receipt of
the annual catalogue issued in the
interest of the State University at
Eugene. The bulletin is very-com
prehensive and well printed.
Blackberry season is about over
once again . Recently there has been
many pickers scattered throughout
the varions well-known patches.
Dick Kieer appears to have been
most favored.
Parties in Oregon City have com
municated with Fred Overlander,
of this eity, relative to securing his
services as clarinetist during the
Fourth of July. Oregon City is
preparing for a big celebration.
Winegar & Snow are building
quite a large stable. Its dimen
sions are about 75 by 100 feet,
They are also adding many up-to
date rigs, in fact, everything indi
cates that they are preparing to run
a model stable. ,
"Mrs. Charley Young, of Elk City,
who recently submitted to an oper
ation in this city for the removal of
a tumor at the hands of Dre. Cathey
and Pernot, is reported tdbe getting
along nicely and her chances for
speedy recovery are splendid.
A gentleman who lives in Linn
county, a few miles east of this
city, states that grain aphis has an
peared in that section and much
damage will result. Some ruet is
reported. The prospects in that
section are not reassuring, by any
means.
The Willamette Valley Chatau
qua Association will meet at Glad
stone rarK, near uregon Uity, on
July 11 and continue in session for
twelve days. The program as pre
seated is an unusually fine one and
the pro.uise of many excellent ar
tides is made. Same of the lead
ing thinkers of the day will deliver
papers.
Mark Rickard, son of Peter Rick
ard, ex-sheriff of this county, arriv
ed home a short time ago from Oro
ville, California, where he has been
for some months. He was employ
ed on a dredger while there and it
is understood that he received
salary that was close to Sf 1UU per

R. S. Harrington, inventor and
owner of the Harrington Washing
Machine went to Portland,, Satur
day, in the interest of his macnine.
Mr. Harrington has a giod and
rapid washer all right enough, as is
evidenced by the fact that he offers

the market.
' Doke Hughes returned, Saturday
from a week spent in Portland. He
has good words for the Exposition
and declares ere long it .will still be
better. The department Mr. Hughes
waa most interested in was that
relating to machinery. . While this
is very fine he says that there are
innumerable machines yet to be in
stalled and later this department
will make even a better showiug.
Spiritualists of Corvallis and vi
cinity will ba disappointed to learn
that Harrison D. Barrett, presi
dent ot the Spiritualistic Associa
tion will not be able fo visit the
i coast this season, consequently will
not be a guest in this city. He
recently lost hi& father and a little
child and this had the effect of pros
trating his wife to such an extent

Testimony relative to the will
of Nancy Armstrong, deceased, of
Willamette precinct, was taken and

day. The property consists of 82
acres of hill land on Beaver creek
at the probable value of $300. She
bequeathed to her son Geo. W
Armstrong, the sum of $10; to her
daughter, Maitha F. Armstrong,

appeared:
While in rortland a lew aavs
ago I visited the Lewis and Clark
Fair. The exhibit in the Agn
cultural buildine was fine, with
the exception ef one county, and
that was a disgrace to the county
that sot it up. This exhibit
designated as 'Lincoln County,'
and the name is conspicuously
placed so that every one can see
it, but the exhibit is a disgrace
to the county. The - gentleman
in charge, is County,. Judge
Brown, of Toledo, and he seems
to be ashamed of himself: There
he is with a stuffed icongar skin,
a pair of elk horns, wild, cat and
and bear skin, and a few oysters,
which was all that could be seen.
No minerals, fruits, vegetables,
butter, wool, mohair, lumber or
fish were in evidence. This in the
midst of the hue display of other
counties ' made the Judge look
small indeed and if he had had
anything , large enough I think
he would have hidden behind it.

Last Wednesday night the, U-
S. Gleason sawmill on Beaver
Creek was burned, together with
about 35,000 feet of lumber. Mr.'
Gleason estimates his loss at
about $1200.
The closing exercises of B lodge tt

Biodgett Saturday and were in the
nature of, a picnic. The weather
was bad, but this made no difference,

H?nry Wells and wife are visit
ing in this city. Henry is a son of
John Wells of this city and it is
many years since he left Corvallis.
He married since leaving here and
of late has been engaged id the
restaurant busiuess in Los Angi-les,
Calif. After a visit here Mr. Well
and wife will go to Portland, where
he expects to go into business.

entire lot of Buff Leghorns formerly
