We have been asked to publish an article prior to the opening of the Lewis and Clark Fair, ting forth undeveloped resources and attractive business proposi- tions that are awaiting capital in rvraili-o o-nA io mfv aa a whnlA "This is hv nr mpnns an easy task. What looks to be a good business venture to one man spells- "ruin" to another. Where one man will succeed an other will fail. For success, much depends upon the individual, his general business sense, diploma cy in dealing with all classes of people, a thorough and practical knowledge of the business he has undertaken. Give - two men equal advantages and one will succeed where the other will go to the wall. Benton county is one of the smallest in the state, but her financial standing is of the best, If a man is seeking a farm there is no need of going elsewhere, for no place in this great valley can he find better. There are hun dreds of large farm's here, that were they cut up into smaller ' tracts, cultivated as they should be by men accustomed to farm life, would yield a handsome liv ing to thousands greater popula tion than we now possess. Stock-raising is yet in its in fancy in this county compared . with what it will be in the not distant future. ; Dairying, too, is profitable and there is everything here that nature can give, and dairyman has but to go at it and his reward is certain. Land is very reasonable at present, but ,ere long the price is certain to increase. One' of the great means o: making money in the future wil be that of fruit-raising. Almost any kind of fruit can be success fully grown in Benton. The prune industry is already great, but apples, pears, plums, peaches. and the like have not been given the attention they are entitled to. In (Jorvallis there are many good openings for investors of money. In the first place, we have here the greatest college in the state. The enrollment at the State Agricultural College ,, is in creasing more rapidly than has been expected and as a result there is a lack of suitable cot- : tages for use of students during the school year. A good many thousands of. dollars could be safely invested in building such cbttages. . I A woolen mill should pay in , Corvallis as well as any place in tike state. . As yet there is no mill here, but we shear annually in this county thousandsof pounds " of ; wool and mohair. It all goes abroad. - A good cannery, one that .will can all sorts of fruit and vege- tables, ought to pay unusually wll here, for there is an abund- arice of every kind of fruit and vegetable raised here. In con nection with the cannery there cojild be operated a factory for canning or condensing milk. No opposition whatever will be found here in this line. , - , Space is too limited at this time to set forth anything like the opportunities awaiting the right men men of some means, energy , and experience. A little inves tigation will pay any such man mighty well. - Council Notes. Council met as tibial for the regular monthly meeting last Monday evening. Various items of business were attended. . Bills were allowed on the general fund in the sum of $341, and on the street fund to the amount of $46. The matter of paying firemen for services after fire was under control was duly considered. Bills that were brought in against the city on account of the fire recent- (tailed to remain and watch said fire, the fire chief shall be' em- !powered to select wot more than jfour men to assist him in this set-jWOrk. For this service the as- 1 sistants are to receive not more than' 40 cents each per hour and the chief shall not be paiid more than 75 cents per hour as his saary' An adjourned meeting of the council is called for next Monday evening. At this meeting it is thought, that various engineers will be in attendance and the mat ter of the probable cost bt sur veyingand estimating RockCreek water route will be discussed. Whether there will be any direct bids made at this meeting for the contract of making this survey and estimate is not known. 'It will likely be an'interesting meet ing. ; COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE.
