statement
FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW.
It is fortunate for men that
their moral development must be
in consonance with laws which
they can neither enact nor repeal.
If it were otherwise, if man's
moral growth depended wholly,
or in a great measure, upon hu
man enactments his moral devel
opment would depend upon hu
man caprice and whim. Moral
well-being would be sought in
this direction today in that to
morrow, and in a yet different
direction the day after. This is
characteristic of all man-made
laws and strikingly so of those
which mark the attempts of meni who represent the great mischief-
to make themselves right and
righteous by law.
Judge Parker has
again reiterated the
that President Roosevelt had
taken from his cabinet George P.
Cortelyou, Secretary of Com
merce and Labor, and made him
chairman of the Republican Na
tional committee, for the purpose
of blackmailing certain corpora
tions to contribute campaign
funds, and 'that Mr. Cortelyou
had assured certain corporations
that a liberal contribution would
render them sate trom prosecu-
tion for violations of anti-trust
laws.
The President has given a state
ment, signed by himself, to the
Amercian people in which he
characterizes Judge Parker's
statements as monstrous, and
most emphatically denies -every
such charge and allegation, arid
declares them to be false. He
says, in part; "I shall go into
the presidency unhampered by
any pledge, promise or under
standing of any kind, or sort,
save my promise made openly to
the American people that so far
as in my power lies I shall see to
it that every man has a square
ideal, no less and no more."
It is shameful that the cam
paign has fallen to so low a level,
but Judge Parker is responsible
for it, for he has permitted him
self to be directed by a junta of
the most unscrupulous politicians
in the country.
As a matter of fact the men
making trusts are most active in
support of Parker. He is -as

University men of Saletn, for not
accepting seme of the offers made
by vallev teams to fill the two
open dates in the OAC schedule
made vacant bv the withdrawal
of , Columbia University and
Whitman College. Some of the
expressions used in the article
are unbecoming and simply have
no foundation in fact. The boys
are called swelled heads because
they defeated the Washingtonians
and because they refused to ac
cept Willamette's challenge
they are made to bear another ex:
pression equally unjust "on what
meat doth this our Caesar feed
that he is grown so great." ,
.. Now,; Corvallis has ..busi
ness reasons for refusing to play
dates outside of her schedule and
it is a matter of her own business
and not somebody else's whether
or not it is wise or unwise to ac
cept offers, made. Her schedule
was made up with a great deal of
care, Willamette and Albany
both being left out because Utah
and Idaho were better drawing
cards from a financial point of
view and gave the boys the privi
lege of playing on the home field
In the first place OAC has the
best reason in the world why she
should not play Willamette and
that is this. Albany defeated
Willamette and Corvallis sent a
challenge to Albany some -time
ago but it was ignored. Albany
is the only natural opponent Cor
vallis has in the valley and she
has refused to pfey and that ends
it. Corvallis would gain noth
ing and nothing whatever would
be decided by the game which
ever way it went.
Corvallis had two open dates
November 4th and 10th. The
reason she did not play Novem
ber 4th is because four of her
men were injured in the Seattle
game and they were not in con
dition to play any team. The
reason she will not play Novem
ber roth is on account of the
Seattle-Eugene game. A special
train will run from Corvallis over
and it was deemed wisest bv the
management to let the boys go
over and see the game for several
reasons. Corvallis people cl arnor
ed for football as well as outside
people but now that they under
stand the situation they are glad.
Corvallis is staking all on the
Eugene game and it must be won
at any cost. The boys have done
splendidly so far and they are not
going to do something now to
spoil the season's work. OAC
has done her duty by other valley
teams and imputations to the
contrary are wholly unfounded.
