Miss Agnes Klecker after a three
weeks vacation with friends in
Alsea and Corvallis returned to
Portland Saturday to resume her
position in the immense depart
ment store of Meier & Frank.
The little daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Milton Howell while playing
about a feed cutter accidentally
crushed two fingers. The little
girl was brought in Weduesday
and Dr. Farra dressed the wound.
The lawn social at the Congre
gational church Friday night was
well attended and highly enjoyed
by all. The proceeds, it is under
stood, will be applied to a fund for
the erection of a parsonage.
Miss Gladys Richardson, of Ho
quiam, Wash., after having spent
some time visiting her relatives
and . friends at Hoquiam, arrived

Wellsher home in this city.
The new directory of the Pacific
Telephone Company was received
by Corvallis business houses last
week and contains the names of
all phones in Benton and, Linn
counties. There are 1009 phones
in the two counties.
H. H. Ling, who is the agent for
the C. & E. Company at Summit,
was married Saturday evening at
that place to Miss Dot Custer. Tne
ceremony was performed at the
residence of Mr. Duncan. Quite a
number of friends were present.
Mrs. C. A. Cook, of Blodgett,
died Thursday at the advanced age
of 83 years and . six months.
Funeral services were conducted by
Rev. C. P. Willis, and burial was
had in the cemetery at Blodgett,
Friday 2:30 p. m.
M . G. Wilkins, who lives at pres
ent at Puyallup, Wash., district
deputy of the A. O. U. W. for Ore
gon, has been assigned to the Pa
cific Coast district and will arrive
in Corvallis tomorrow and stop over
a short time on his way to Newport.
Mrs. S. E. Moore returned Sat
urday from an extended visit with
relatives and friends in Prineville
and Portland. Mrs. Moore has
been in attendance also at the grand
lodge of the Degree of Honor re
ceiving the honor of being elected
grand usher.
There is an unmistakable lull in
general business and everybody is
watching the crop reports. Every
thing depends on the ability of the
farmer to make the earth yield an
abundance of things needful to
keep the wheels of commerce go
ing. Arthur Kroenig, who came to
Corvallis about two months ago
with smallpox, has disappeared
having one of Daley's $20 wheels.
He rented the wheel with the in
tention of going to Philomath and
returning the next day. It is now
about 1 2 days and nothing has been
heard from him.
Rev. J. R. N. Bell, pastor of the
First Presbyterian church of Baker
City, arrived with Mrs. Bell at New
port last Tuesday. Dr. Bell and
his friend Dr. E. J. Thompson, of
Independence, enjoys the distinc
tion of having performed more mar
riage ceremonies during the last 15
years than any other two ministers
either4 in Oregou or Washington;
and ome one says that of all Dr.
Bell has made happy only one couple
afterwards indulged in divorce.

Marion Lytle, who lives in Philo

the disease from sleeping in the

who recently had it. Mr. Ly tie's
case is the most severe of those that
have occurred recently in Benton
county.
The wonderful stiides of the
rural free delivery system in the
past four or five years is the most
marked feature of national growth.
In 1889 only 200 routes were in
operation. At the close of the
present year there will be over
26,000 routes running, bringing a
daily mail service to more than
12,500,000 people residing in rural
districts ,
The specimen jars for the Benton
county exhibit at the Lewis aLd
Clark Fair have arrived and are
now on exhibition at S. L. Kline's.
The jars are made of the best glass,
different sizes and oval . The proper
position when filled will be inverted
so as to show the contents to -the
best advantage. H. L. French has
charge of the exhibit and will col-,
lect and seal all exhibits put in the
jars. le will nave boie cnarge or
all the jars with the exception ot
the jelly glasses which anyone may
secure.
The grand midsummer excursion
on the C. & E. to the Bay Sunday
was well patronized. There were
eight coaches and about 300 pas
sengers, 60 of whom were from Cor
vallis. Many took advantage of
the trip over the bar in the steamer
"Roscoe." "The Life Saving Crew"
gave an exhibition on the beach in
the afternoon. The weather was
all that could be reasonably hoped
for. Among those who went from
Corvallis were Rob't Huston and
wife, J. K. Johnson and wife, B. F.
Irvine and daughter, T. H. Col
bert, E. E. Wilson, R. C. Craveu
and Thos. Nolan.
Last week E. W. Streng ship
ped a carload of moulding to
Salem. This speaks well for
the product turned out by the
Corvallis Mill company, besides
having the best and most com
pleted supply of all kinds of lum
ber put up in a shape that com
mands the attention of high
class buyers. With the same
consignment went also two car
loads of unfinished lumber.
Mr. Kelly, of the Booth-Kelly
company of Eugene was down to
see Mr. Stiong last week about
purchasing 2500 more logs. The
purchase was made which gives
Strong two and oue half million
feet in addition to what he al
ready had or nearly six million
feet now in the river and on the
bauk. Mr. Strong has a large
force of men at work up the Mc
Kenzie getting the logs into the
river ready for the drive which
will start in about 30 days. The
steam launch the company now
has is a beauty and is 'equal to
the work of nearly a dozen men.
