was attired in a suit of conventional
black. The bridesmaid, Miss Grace

Don't Shoot Pheasants Yet.
Sportsmen are eagerly looking
forward . - to the open season for
Chinese pheasants, as it is evident
that the shooting will; be better
than ever before. Everyone who
has had. an occasion to go through
the fanning districts has noticed
that the. supply of young, birds is
unusually plentiful. One can
not drive through the wheat lands
in any "direction from Corvallis
without frequently starting up
large flocks of the beautiful birds.
Just last week a farmer living
near here," started up a bevy of
nearly 30 birds about half grown.
There has .been, some mis
apprehension in regard to the
pneasant law. arising1 no doubt
rom misleading articles that have
appeared in many papers of late.
There was a law up in the; last
egislature but was not passed, to
change the present law.
The present law does not open
the season until October. As a
general thing a large number of
the birds are killed each year be-
orejthe season opens by hunters
or by the - rains Ithat : kill the
young birds soon after they are
hatched. This year, however.
there was no rain until the young
pheasants were strong enough to
survive it. For this reason there
will be twice as many vouner
birds as last year.
The pheasants are less timid,
too, than formerlv, owing to a
stricter enforcement of the game
aws. A. few years ago illegal
hunting was so common that the
pheasants $ became wild, and
sportsman had difficulty in get
ting withinrange of them after
the season opened. - Illicit hunt
ing has now been almost entirely
abandoned, and the birds are
easily approached up to the be
ginning of the open season.
Marion Lytle has Smallpox.
Marion Ly tie has smallpox in
Philomath. Saturday he- was
taken with a chill, Sunday he
had a fever and Tuesday the pus
tules that are the. unmistakable
signs of smallpox began to ap
pear on his face. The case is
very mild, and Mr. Iytle suffers
little or no inconvenience now
the eruptions have begun to ap
pear. He was in the livery
stable at Philomath when Haw
kins dame in on the 4th all brok
en out with the disease. That is
the only exposure he had to any
se, but, as many more were ex
posed, there are still others who
may yet take it.
Hawkins and Speedy were re
leased from quarantine Monday.
Speedy did not break out with
the disease at all, as he was vac
cinated by Dr. Newth soon after
the exposure. They both went
up into an old cabin in the hills,
however, and remained there un
til they were pronounced cured.
Thev took an oil can and boiled
their- clothes and thoroughly dis
infected before coming down.
All these cases are exceedingly
mild and not particularly dan
gerous. It is called by some Ma
nila itch, but physicians who
have been to the Philippine
Islands say that this disease is
unknown there, but is called
smallpox in a mild form, and be
longs peculiarly to the Pacific
Coast of the United States.
