Mis manipulations the public was

one hundred million dollars.

'The Coivallis Times com-
mences the first column of news
: in its issue of July 20, with these
. sentences in the scare head:
HOT WEATHER.
"-Score of Persons Prostrated Not
.a Particle of Breeze is Felt
Intense Suffering is
Caused in the
City.
"These prognostications of evil
vdays are fully verified in the col
umn of matter , which follows,
.and to which the heading evi-
Vdently alludes. It is a resume of
t the Democratic situation, and
rtbe heading certainly fits it well.
In one place he acknowledges
rthat "in West Virginia Demo
cratic success is threatened."
"This is a false alarm, Brother
Irvine, -so don't lose any sleep
-over it. The threatened calam
ity will not materialize. Roose
velt will be elected by a major
ity so overwhelming that the
Parker vote of the country will
- be put down in the returns as
"scattering." Grandpa Davis
' -won't even acknowledge that he
"'.'also ran."
It looks as if the Grand Lodge
LA. O. V. W., of Oregon, was
about to perpetrate the same
' vCold-blooded atrocity that has
been imposed upon the members
- by the California Grand Lodge.
" That is forcing out the old mem
f ibers who have ma e the order
- vwhat it is today. As soon as a
member commits the crime of
becoming old,, and the leeches
- :and hangers-on who have been
supported for years by the Grand
Lodge find some of their per-
quisites in danger, then the old
men must be bled or thrown
overboard. In the language of
'-one of their own speakers: "he
ought to lapse or submit to a
rate of assessment sufficient to
vpay out the full amount of his
policy." A more heartless pro
position was never made to a con
fiding public, than this California
.trick. The order there is prov
i ing false to every promise made
to these men when they lured
them into tbeir lodges. It ex
; pects to induce enough young
men to contribute to their game
to keep the concern going in-
definitely. Every promise they
are now making to induce young
.men to join their dying order,
they know well cannot be ful-s-fillecL
We trust the Oregon
Grand Lodge will be more honest
- in their course in this matter. If
t not the Order in this State is
doomed to an early death.
Ancient Order United Workmen.
The grand lodge of Ancient

$700 or more and the latter ft r
$1000. It was pointed out that
it was desirous to take , the chem
ical laboratory entirely out of the
college building and the refitting
of other rooms would be necessary
and to do this would entail the
above cost. In the library there
are more book shelves needed also
another doorway. In the matter
of a museum, collections are to be
made of fossils, relics, antiquities
etc. similar to that at Eugene.
Two gentlemen, F. L. Reader,
clerk of Harney county and Han.
C. H. Parrisb, of BurnsylOregon,
who have, extensive collections
have offered to assist in the work.
Two committees will be appoint
ed by the president ot the board
of regents, who are to look around
and report what repairs are need
ed. The other committee is ot
a supervisory nature and will
have oversight of all new build
ing going on about the institution
The latter committee is standing.
WATEK SUPPLY
The four wells recently sank at the
institutions furnished 9,000 gallons of
water every 16 hours. The water supply
is sufficient but the pumps are inadequate
to supply the demand for all purposes,
and larger pumps will be put in. Dr.
Withycombe recommended that a sewer
be put in from CautLom Hall to the
south end of the college farm as the
sewer already in is very small and be
comes clogged. It will be necessary to
put in an eight-inch sewer or put in a
septic tank. Another recommendation
was read from Dr. Withycombe, looking
toward experiments in poultry raising.
The recommendations were not. acted
upon.
SALARIES ADVANCED.
Four members of the faculty had their
salaries increased. They were F. E.
Edwards,, assistant chemist, who will
now receive $1020, M. C. Philips, instruct
or in Mechanical drawing and iron-work,
will receive $1020, R. J. Nichols, libra
rian, will receive $60 per . month instead
of $40 as heretofore, W. O. Trine, phy
sical director, will receive $1020.
The committee recommending these
increases of salaries also recommended
that steps be taken by the faculty to re
duce the number of fai'ures of students
to pass examinations.
