IT JS A MATTER OFHEAUB
O. A. DEARING. ED. and BUS. MGR.
A town is judged by the gener
al appearance of its newspapers.
A prosperous, well-printed paper,
well filled with live, lrcal adver
tising, is the bes-t towr-builder !
yoa can have. The Gazette is
now filling the bill in evtiy re-.
spect, as the best paper ever pub
lisbed in the county, ami as a
cansequence Corvalhs and Ben
ton connty stock is risii g in the
market. Twelve pages ei.ch week
and 42 columns of inteiesting
reading matter, in addition to the
advertising and that is 20 col
umns more than any other paper
itt the county gives you. The
Gazette stands for the best in
terests of Corvallis and Benton
Ctntyt without a taint of yellow
journalism.-It should be found
in every home in the county.
It is improving with every issue.

UTTERS FROM THE PEOPLE,
Articles of general interest will be pub
fished in this department as the personal
opinion of the writers. It is understood
that the paper is not held responsible
for any opinion here expressed.
Editor Gazette: In your
notice of the meeting at the Court
House, last Monday May 29,
wfakh you denominate a Prohibi
tion Rail)', and over which I pre
sided, you say it "turned out to
be & Prohibition Mass Meeting."
-A few words if you please. I
tool:: the chair by request, suppos
ing it was a meeting in behalf of
rtbe "Local Option Law" now
pending before the people. To
ray surprise I found myself chair
man of a "Prohibition Mass
Meeting." I am not a Thud
Party Prohibitionist I think, if
we can, that we should keep this
canvass out of politics. That
the Party Prohibitionist should
consent for one time to work for
Iocal Option. That we should
endeavor to poll all the tem
perance strength of all parties,
and if we can do so we shall win.
You say truly, "there is a large
and well defined class of citizens
in favor of temperance measures
. from a purely non partisan point
of view, yet when made a politi
cal issue will discard it."
There was $67 taken in pledjes
instead of "less than $5 was se
cured" as you state.
John Reeves.
