Character of Our Immigrants.
Prior to 1880 the nations of western
Europe, Great Britain, Germany and
the Scandinavian countries furnished
over 80 pr cent of all our immigrants,
the highest class that we could hope
for. Hungary, Italy, Poland and the
other countries of eastern Europe .fur
nished less than 1 per cent. From 1881
to 1899 the ratios changed slightly, but

to the number of 114,000 came in, while
186,000 Italians honored us with their
transfer of "allegiance." In July of
this year 67,538 people-of all nations
immigrated into this country.
