believe we can scare his ideal out of this
corner of-the county, provided be doesn't

Quite a heavy wind storm swept
through the valley late Saturday after

E E. Finley, who has had charge of
the business department of Philomath
College, was suddenly called to his home
at Newberg the latter part of last week
on account of illness ot his father.
The moving picture entertainment,
given by Messrs. Steel and Freeland, last
Saturday was attended by a large crowd.
But to the disappointment of all. about
the middle of the program, something
happened to the gas supply which put an
abrupt stop to the program.
A very pleasant evening was spent by
the students of the College of Pli ilomath
at the home of Prof, and Mrs. L. B
Baldwin last Thursday. St. Patrick was
highly honored, and all spent a very en
joyable evening.
Harry Rowe, from Salem, is visiting
his sister, Mrs. F. H. Neff.
Miss Kate 'Boles, who has been in
Portland for some time, is in Philomath
visiting friends and relatives.
R. Pugh and his brother intend
adding a furniture department to the
hardware store. This is a much needed
addition.
The entertainment at the College of
Pnilomath last Friday evening, was one
of the best ever given in .Philomath.
The elocutionary numbers were excel
lent; one of the best of which was a
dialogue, a selection from ' "School for
Scandal." The songs by the College
quartet were well rendered and Miss
Mahal Crouise delighted the audience
with several selections.
There will be a sub-preparatory course
for the sixth, seventh aud eighth grades,
iu connection with the College of Philo
math, the spring term. Prof. Baldwin
has secured competent instructors, and,
as public school closes this week there
are many who will be glad to continue
the work another term.
A. B. Newton returned from Rainier
last Saturday, where he has been work
ing for H. O. Wyatt. His son, EdwiD,
his gone to take his place.
Miss Elva Whealdon returned from
Plaiuview, Tuesday, where she has been
visiting her parents.
Mr. Woodwatd, of Eddyville, was a
business t aller at Philomath the first of
the week.
J. E. Henkle has been remodeling his
store room and has put in a new counter
for more room to accommodate their new
spring goods.
John Pugh, a brother of R. E Pugh,

The entertainment given at Philomath
College last Tuursday eveuiug'by the
physical culture and music departments
was much enjoyed. The club drills
showed careful training and drill. The
Kitchen Symphony was an attractive
novelty and a great success.

Thesei ''bosses" have foisted weak
men, selfish men men desiring
and seeking only their own sue
cess upon our delegates in repeat
ed instances. They have , done
all possible' to create faction in
republican lanks. They have
given out that this man or
that one is the strongest possble
man to place in nomination for
he "has hosts of democratic
friends who will support hitn
It is not at all incredible, and
believed by many, that we have
had a state senator nominated and
triumphantly elected by demo
cratic support which has been re
ciprocated by helping to piace
democrats in the more desiraole
county offices. It is only upon
such hypothesis we may exp'ain
the political success which has
attended some men of very srnal
caliber. Again the enemy
practicing these tactic?. Already
are certain democratic leaders pat
ting would-be republican nom
inees on the back and giving out
that they would draw strong dem
ocratic support at the polls.

seeking candidates cannot be nom
inated without democratic influ
ence, and equally certain that
nominated they cannot be elected
without democratic votes. If the
delegates to the county conven
tion will closely scrutinize every
man seeking nomination ana
make sure that he is a clean
strait-out republican who has no

who will be loyal to the whole
ticket, the republican voters will
do the rest. -
"Vernou" is also right con
cerning the nomination and re

congress. To laii in this would
be a distinct loss not oniy to this
congressional district but to the
entire state.
We hope the nominating con
vention will take the rational and
business -view of this matter
and place him in nominaion.
There's no fear thdt he'd fail of
election. If several conventions
shall act wisely Benton county
.will not only be fonnd in the re
publican column but will place a
republican in every county office.
