Meetings will be held at the Grange
Hall, Fairmount, on Saturday next,
commencing at 10:30 a, , m. The
meeting takea place in Grange Hall,'
and officers and members of the
Grange will turn oat in full force to
do honor to the occasion, and en
courage the pupils by their presence
and sanction. y
- The invitation issued by the su
parintendent is a model of persist
ent and earnest entreaty, and indi
cates not only a deep interest in the
good of the schools, bat a firm faith
in the good wi'l and heartv n-operation
of the parents and friends of
the scholars. We give it in full:
INVITATION".
You are cordially invited to attend
this meeting. It does not matter whether
yon are a granger, come anyway. If you
are interested f our schools, bring your
family and friends. The Grange has
kindly consented to give jus this day and
their influence in making this meeting
profitable. Look over the subjects 'and
bring some new thoughts to give. If we
are "to stir our pupils to greater efforts, if
we are to arouse a greater interest, you
must give your support to these meetings.
Remember the meeting is held at a time
of the year when there is but' little work
to do on the farm. We want your pres
ence. Let us 'fill the Grange hall. The
meeting last year with you was one of the
best held in the county. Let us main
tain the record already established. Ex
pecting the presence of kevery school offi
cer, every teacher and. every parent and
patron who want better schools, we again
bid you welcome. Speak to your neigh
bor, arrange to bring your family, take
a nioment to fill your basket, and come
with willing hands and willing hearts.
Program to begin promptly at 10:30 a.
m. The Hall is just across the river from
Albany on river road.
The program is calculated to still
further rouse the interest -of the
audience, and impress upon every
visitor the importance of the suOt
j-ct. No t ict in history has been
more clearly demonstrated than
that education is the driving wheel
of civilization, and the hope of the
world lies in the maintainence and
perpetuity of the public schools.
The following is the program for
the day.
PROGRAM.
Singing Aiidience
Address Supt. Geo. W. Denman
"Upon Whom Should the Responsibility
of the School Rest?"..:
; T.B. Williamson, '

operation in Some School Districts."
J. T. Mayberry, .. .
J. G. Gibson.
A basket dinner will be served
at the noon hour to every person
present. This forms one of the
pleasantest features of the day.
Interspersed with the program, as
outlined above, Supt. D-man will,
introduce his phonographidselectious
as follows:
PHONOGRAPH.
A 40 minute entertainment will be, -
given for the children on one of these ;
little talking machines. Such solos as
"Turkey in Straw," "Shadows on Door,":
"Just as the Sun Went Down," "Rocked
in the Cradle of the Deep" and selec
tions from some of the great band mas
tars, such as Gilmore and Sousa; "Uncle
Josh's Experience at a Ball Game,""In
a Department Store" and "Arrival in
New York City" will be given.
If you are interested in the good
of our public schools, turn out to
this meeting. It will help you and
encourage your children. No county
in our stetehas better public schools
than Benton, and for this condition
of affairs we give- the credit where
it belongs, to the earnest, honest,
hearty good will and persistent
labor of the best county school
superintendent in the State of Ore
gon, George W. Denman of Corval
iis. As predicted in our last issue the
order of Fraternal Home -Buyers
was officially branded as a fraud on
Thursday last, at the trial of the
case in Portland. The originator
of the scheme, C. ' Cuy Wakefield,
was held to answer to the grand
jury on a charge of fraud, while
Ross Nicholas was dismissed from
custody, the decision being that he
had not been guilty of wrongdoing
in connection with the order. This
decision by United States Commis
sioner McKee may have the effect
of putting the order out of business,
for hereafter all letters addressed to
the concern will be returned to the
writers with the legend "fraudulent"
stamped across them. Should any
communications of a business na
ture be sent out by the order, the
result will probably be the arrest of
the official or officials of the order
whose names appear in the com
munication. "
A Great Newspaper.
It is manifest that the '.war which is
now on between Russia and Japan will
be the most picturesque atid thrilling in
recent history. It is another case of
Goliath and David and it is within the
bounds of possibilities that the results
will be quite aa surprising in the out
come. ; . S .-" U' ' ' '
: Everyone will wsi't the war news, no
in inconsequential driblets bnt in masses,
particularly when the exciting events
are detailed. " , . . : .
The Journal lias made preparations to
cover the events of the war fully and
adequately. In addition to its regular
news service, which will be greatly ex
panded and supplemented by i-peoial ser
vice at various, points of interest, it has
arranged for the complete Hearst news
service. As id well known a great statf
of noted war correspondents are already
on the scene. Wherever there is news
it will be secured totally without regard
to cost. A proportionate part of the cost
The Journal will bear and in considera
tion of th s will receive every line of war
news that comes over the cables for the
Hearst papers. '
This will give us facilities for laying
the news before our readers untxcelled
by any western newspaper. ,
The Journal proposes to give its read
ers the news without regard to expense
and in the exciting days that are now
opeu will set a new mark for newspaper
enterprise in this sectfon of the country.
If you want to know what is going on,
the place to find it is in the columns of
The Journal, and those who want to
keep up with the rapid progress of events
would do well to send in their subscrip
tions at once so as not to lose a single
issue. .
