the possibility of the flight of the
Chinese court, and says it is per
plexed by divided councils, but
it is not likely to flee uless Rus
sia attempts to invade inside the
Great Wall.
The Russian fleet at Vladivos
tax is ready to sail.
Korea is said to be the real
point at issue.
FIFTY MILLION DOLLAR FIRE.
Twenty-five Business Blocks a
Baltimore Burned to Ashes. -
The largest fire in the history
of Baltimore commenced on Sun
day at ii a. m. in the wholesale
drygoods house of John T. Hurst
& Co. on Liberty Street between
Baltimore and Fayette Sts. Ex
tending principally eastward, it
has leveled almost the entire
district between Lombard and
Lexington streets, and from
Howard to Commerce. All the
principal newspaper offices, many
public ouildings, large wholesale
stores, banks, warehouses and
manutactorie?. The most con
servative estimate of loss places
it at $50,000,000 with chances of
increasing that amount, as the
fire is still burning. Engines
and engine companies, policemen
and military companies, have
been hurried to Baltimore from
New York, Philadelphia and
Washington. Live cinders have
been carried half a mile or more,
setting roofs on fire. The fire has
already covered an area of three
quarters' of a mile in length and
a quarter of a mile in width, tak
ing in many of the most impor
tant buildings in the city.
.Owing to the wide extent of
the calamity no approximate es
timate can be made. The insur
ance is expected to reach twenty
minions.

morning at the Arlington hotel
the bulletin was published that
Senator Hanna's condition was
unchanged. Drs. Rixby and
Magruder will hold a consulta
tion this forenoon. '

shows Hanna's temperature half
a degree higher than yesterday.
Dr. Rixle v believes the disease
is reaching its c'imaxi ,
H. M. Hanna, of Thomasville,
Ga , brother of Mark, was today
wired to come to Washington at
the request ' of ' Mrs.' Hanna.
Other members of the family were
notified there was no immediate
necessity of their presence.

L. Senders, one of "Albany's beBt
known citizens, and a pioneer of
Oregon, died at the North Pacific 1
Sanitarium in Portland. Mr. Sen
ders had long suffered from" kidney
trouble, and some time ago submit- ;
ted to an operation. He recovered
from the operation bat stomach
trouble set in and his general debit '
itated condition "prevented his re
covflry. Leonidas Senders was born
in Bosen, Germany, May 14, 1833.
He came to America in th 50s.
locating in Missouri. In 1862 he
came toOregon via the Isthmus of
fanama, and, in company with m.i
Sternberg, established a merchai
dfse business in Brownsville, Linn '
County. Later they came to Albany ;
and continued the business. " Mr. j
Senders accumulated considerable I
means and took an active interest I
in upbuilding Albany . . He built
several bricks buildings v and for
some time was one of the largest
dealers in blooded horses-in tho val
ley. He was a prominent figum in
the Democratic councils of Linn
County. The deceased was a mem
ber of tbe Masonic and Workmen
fraternal orders. He is survived
by tw.o daughters and two pons:
Mrs. Belle Lewis of Tacoma: Mrs.
Ame-Ha Weinberg, of .;' Elleusburg,
Wash ; Morris and Albert Sender?,
of Albany. The remains were
brought to Albany and inte?E&ent
took ptaca Friday.

to be held here by Superintendent
G. W. Denman next week, begin
ning February 1 and conclung
