FRIDAY. JANUARY 15, 1904.
EDITORIAL COMMENT.
That the play-going public of
Corvallis appreciate a good play,
and will give it a hearty sup port,
was evidenced by the attendance
at the Opera House on Wednes
day evening, at the presentation
of "Are you a Mason." The
company was a fine one in every
respect, the play the best we have
had for a long time, full of fun,
with every character well pre
sented. On the whole we con
gratulate the management on the
success of this, the first of the
new series of performances, and
bespeak ior their future efforts
the hearty support of the people
of Corvallis.
The outlook for the world's
progress in 1904 could not be
better. Seldom has soAnuch
that has a world import been so
near development and comple
tion, as appears before us at the
present time. Panama takes its
place among the list of republics,
and the work to be done there
will give her a prominence out
of keeping with her size and
population. France will have
accomplished the grandest work
in her history the complete
separation of Church and State,
and the absolute control of the
education of her children. Spain,
old and imbecile, will make a
brave attempt to throw off the
shackles of the tyrant that has
degraded her, and take again the
place that Spanish valor held for
her through centuries of con
quest Though the new Repblic
of Spain may not be an accom
plished fact this year, yet a long
step will most certainly be made
in that direction. The very first
step must be the enthronement
of the school house. The valor
of little Japan will force changes
in the Orient that are at present
almost undreamed of. Turkey,
Macedonia and the Balkaas will
work out their own salvation
through the arbitratment of bat
tle, and the powers of Europe
! may be involved in the dispute.
Mexico will put the finishing
touches to the work of twenty-
five years by adopting compul
sory, education and the gold
standard. The United States
will elect a president for tour
years and take to herself officially
the name she has made famous
throughout the world, "Amer
ica." In the world's history one
of the most important chapters
will be written by 1904.

The City Council is to be com
mended for the prompt and effect
ive measures taken by them at
their last meeting regarding the
gambling school recently started
to teach the youth of this city the
mysteries of stud poker and kin
dred accomplishments. We print
elsewhere the text of the ordi
nance. Corvallis is an educa
tional center, and almost every
branch of a complete education
comes within the curriculum of
our various educational institu
tions. Sut so far none of our
schools or colleges has taken up
the particular science taught
nightly in the "Fagin" crib re
cently raided by the police.
Draw poker and stud poker,
twenty-one and cinch, pedro and
faro, have never yet received the
attention at the hands of our ed
ucators that some people consider
them entitled to. The device of
locked doors, and an innocent
looking outside sentinel to guard
the children of the school from
the intrusion of parents or guar
dians, is a feature that ordinary
schools have not yet adopted, and
one that the faculty of this school
should reconsider. Publicity,
from our point of view, is much
to be preferred. Why not put
out a sign that will be self ex
planatory, and to mark the edu
cational features of the place,
add a classical quotation from
Dante?
