An' Instance of Growth.
It is a pleasure, in this day of great
industrial combinations, to note an
instance where an independent concern
has attained to mammoth proportions,
and has grown steadily but surely for
years from a small beginning into the
fullness of the present time. Such an
institution is cited in the seed business
of D. M. Ferry & Co., who for nearly
half a century have gone forward each
year, constantly adding new customers
and retaining all its old ones, until it
is today the source of seed supply from
which the great crops of this country
spring. Seed houses have come and
gone some survived and flourished for
years, but finally succumbed for one
reason or another while Ferry's kept
growing all the time. Thousands of
farmers, gardeners and flower growers
look to them year after year for the
seeds from which the prosperity of
their fields and gardens is to grow, and
the fact that they are never disap
pointed in Ferry's seeds is the secret
of the wonderful expansion of this pop
ular firm. You can buy their seeds in
every city, town or hamlet of this land,
and you are always certain that they
are fresh, true' to name and sure to
grow. Their 1904 Seed Annual, a val
uable guide in the selection of the
proper seeds to plant, will be sent free
to all readers of this paper who apply
to D. M. Ferry & Co., Detroit, Mich.

Another regular article of export to

KRUGER IN EXILE.
He Bay. He Has
Not Tet
Abandoned
Hope.
President Kruger, as It seems nat
ural to call him, is a lonely and pathet
ic figure in his ' declining years. He
lives In retirement on the French Rivi
era, near the Italian frontier, a beauti
ful country, but not as attractive to
the old Boer's eyes as the monotonous
veldt. Darwin, In his "Voyage of the
Beagle," says that the country which
haunted" him most and exercised the
pleasantest sentimental Interest upon
him was the sterile and uninhabitable
Patagonian wilderness, a land of
sweeping plain and billowy upland,
arid, tireless and melancholy. If such
a wild spot, with no landscape charm
could fascinate a chance traveler, how
passionate must be the attachment of
the exiled Boer to the land of his birthl
Mr. Kruger lives in seclusion, denying
himself to all but intimate friends. To
the visitina journalist he Is "not at
home." He passes his time In reading
his own treasured book, the Bible, and
keeping up with his correspondence
with the Boers who have .founded
colonies in South Africa, Chill and Hol
land, some of which are prosperous.
M. Massard, of La Patrie, obtained
admittance to Mr. Kruger's presence
the other day to present an allegorical
figure in bronze entitled by the donors
"Surssum Corda." The Frenchman, of
course, read a little address full of
complimentary references to the for
mer President and his heroic people.
Mr. Kruger In reply said he had not
abandoned hope, for his faith In divine
justice was unwavering. "His last
handshake was sad," said the emotion
al Frenchman, "and a mist seemed to
come over his eyes. I myself could not
suppress a tear." No doubt a genuine
tear, as became the director of La
Patrie charged with such a sensational
mission. When Mr. Kruger said he
had not abandoned hope he must have
bad in mind the building of a Dutch
South Africa on the ashes of the rav
aged republics, the scheme of the re
habilitated Bond and the dream of
veterans like De Wet, Delarey and
Louis Botha, New York Evening Sun.
Substitute Tor Diamond Drills.
The price of black diamonds, used
for core rock drills, having risen in
forty years from three dollars to fifty
dollars per carat, a substitute for them
has long been sought, says the Youth's
Companion. One such substitute is
furnished by the shot drill, invented by
Mr. Davis, an Australian. In this ma
chine the place of the diamond-cutters
is taken by chilled steel shot, fed
through a hollow rod in the drill, which
wear away the rock by a crushing or
grinding action. A machine, recently
tested in New York, easily cut through
a mass of brick and cement, and even
through embedded plates of cast Iron,
making smooth cores of four feet In
length.

giving his endorsement to Peruna than his
positive conviction that the remedy is all that

OLD SORES, ULCERS, ABSCESSES
The best evidence of a bad condition
the system, is an old festering; sore,
me bodily impurities are not passing;
are left in the system to dog- and poison the blood. So thoroughly does
the poispn permeate the system that every little scratch, cut or bruise
inflames and festers. Everything- about an old sore or ulcer suggests disease.
They affect the general health, they
require constant attention, and are a
source of anxiety and trouble all the
time, and in some cases highly offen
sive. There is danger, too, of these
places becoming cancerous if not
treated promptly and in the right
way. Washes, salves ana ointments
are erood for external use, but they
can't stop the discharge or change
the condition of the blood, and for
this reason the sore never heals per
manently. Not until the blood is purged ox
impurities and the system cleansed
of all harmful substances should the
ulcer heal, or the effect upon the sys
tem might prove disastrous. S.S. S.
goes into the circulation and searches
out and removes the cause of the
old sore and invigorates and builds
tip the polluted, sluggish blood
again, and as the poisonous matter
is driven from the system the sore
begins to heal, new flesh forms and
the place is soon covered over wittt
fresh skin and the sore is gone for all time. Where the constitution is
debilitated from the effects of chronic sores, nlcers, abscesses, carbuncles,
the poison the sore must heal, because nothing is left in the system for
it to feed upon. Write us should you
