The ieni cralic jatty .will not
nominate "aoine cold blooded,

party has learned by bitter ex
ptrieuce to be cartful whom it
nominates. McMiunville Regis
ter. It makes little difference to
the country, whom the demo

has learned by bitter experience
to be careful whom they elect.

Among the speakers at the
"Mob Conference," held recent

John Temple Graves, ot Geor

Georgian, Mr. Graves defended
lynching as a remedy for the
crime ot rape. He expanded his
chest and informed his audience
that "the South never weighs
money in the matter of woman's
honor.?' Yet the recent state
senate of Georgia found it neces
sary to pass a bill forbidding the
whipping of women in the pris

Mrs. Kleeman's son, William
The young man, who was about ,
23 years of age, was in bathing
at Nye Creek last Friday morn
ing about 11 o'clock. The surf
was light and being an expert
swimmer, Mr. Kleeman was
tempted to ride out oa the swells
too far from shore. Becoming
exhausted in his attempts to
overcome the force of the out
going tide, he cried for help.
A thousand horror-stricken
spectators, amcng whom were his
mother and sister, witnessed his
struggle, C. A. Burden, of
Eugene, and Mr. Bush, f Salem,
went to his assistance, and made
an heroic effort to assist liim to
shore, but they were compelled
to give up their task and battle
for their own lives. Others
rushed to the bath house for
life preservers and lines. " A long
rope was secured and lengthened
by the bathers, who joined hauds
and formed a human life-line,
but the line was too short to
reach the drowning man and he
went down. The body was re-;
OQvered early "Saturday morning,
where it was . thrown up on the
rocks by the breakers.
Otto Kleeman, father ot the
unfortunate vouritr man. is a
prominent Portland architect.
When the news of his son's death
reached him shortly after its
occurrence, he telegraphed for a
special engine to take him and
his son, Hugo, from Albany to
Newport. This train . passed
through Corvallis that evening
This is the first drowning that
has occurred at Nve Creek. The
surf at this place is considered so
safe for bathers that many have
become careless and venture
some. There are no treacherous
currents, and with ordinary rru
dence and caution anotner acci
dent like that of last Friday need
never be repeated on that strip 01

A Lecture on Electricity.
Albany Democrat.
Electricity commenced its career at the
breaking morn of creation, with a few
passengers on board and has continued
its course with increasing speed and
growing glory down to the present mo
ment. It now travels with the brilliancy
and rapidity of the lightning's blaze, and
even compels the very lightnings to
speak in a familiar voice to man. The
chariot of science is destined to continue
its majestic course, In duration coeval
with our . globe. Genius is supremely
higher than talents, and no man of genius
had ever opposed electricity in its won
derful workings. This shows that if it
was considered . unworthy of doing all
that is claimed for it that it would be
discarded the same as all worthless
things that are cast aside. Dr. Darrin at
Hotel Revere is an advanced thinker on
the application of electricity for the cure
of disease and to prove his skill we
enumerate many cures performed by
him, and would suggest to the thinking
minds that today cures are being per
formed by this subtle ageacy, that
seemed impossible ten years ago.
Among the many successful! treated
may be mentioned ex-Senator. George
Chandler's son of Baker City, who had
trouble and general debility; cured andV
gained 30 pounds. . . . .
F. H. Hohn, 247 Commercial street,
Salem, catarrh, cured.
J. W. Pate, Jefferson, Or , rheuma
tism and diabetes, cured.
. Reuben Lee and wife, Turner, Or.,
sciatic rheumatism attd cough, restored.
Mrs- C. Pfend, Salem, varicose ulcers
On both limbs, cured.
B. Baxter, Ferry street, Salem, tumor
cured.
Miss Irene Ashford, Albany, Ot., dis
charging ear, cured.
J. S. Hesten, Salem, liver complaint
and cyepepsia, cured. .
jvirs. uueian koss, ot saiem, was in
Albany Last week visiting friends. She
formerly lived near here. Mrs. Ross is
very enthusiastic over her recovered
health. She was cured by Dr. Darrin
last summer, in Salem, her afflictions be
ing chronic dyspepsia, kidney and liver
troubles, thought to be incurable,
sa. darkin's place or business.
Dr. Darria is located it the Revere
hotel until October 1st, and will give
free examination to all from 10 to 5 or
7 to 8 daily. The poor free except med
