PUNISH THE LYNCHER.
A learned college professor of
effete Boston fears that the lynch
ing epidemic may eventually
reach the Hub, and he will not
be surprised to see a lynching in
the Public Garden before the end
of another decade.
There have been some pretty
serious riots in Boston. Garri
son was mobbed in 1835, and
narrowly escaped being hung 011
State street. Wendell Phillips
was mobbed in the Music Hall,
in the 50's. and had a narrow
escape, the leaders in the dis
turbance being among the wealth
iest and most influential of the
citizens. There was a terrible
riot in Ceoper street, in 1863,
when lives were lost. And there
have been other disturbances of
a serious nature, where race
prejudices were the controlling
influences. What is needed is
fearless officers to make arrests,
and men on the bench like Judge
Russell, who did more to suppress
the thug spirit than any other
judge we have had for a century.
Impatience for justice may be
excused up to a certain point, but
when it induces the leading
spirits in a community to take
the law into their own hands, it
is time that the machinery of jus
tice shall be set in motion to
teach them a lesson. Justice
Brewer says the leader of a lynch
ing party is a murderer, and if
he can be so taken, convicted
and punished as such, a long
step will be taken toward the
suppression of the epidemic.
Men like Senator Tillman should
be suppressed, and Northern or
ganizations ought to cease invit
ing him to address them, for he
publicly approves the horrors o
the hangings and burnings by
the mobs, and tells his Northern
auditors that he hopes the good
work will go on. The growth o
this mob spirit is a national peril
against which the press, the pul
pit, the ,bar and educational in
stitutioas should enter an em
phatic protest, and continue it
until public sentiment has reach
ed the point where it overcomes
any such demonstrations as are
now epidemic. Stern measures
are needed to suppress the crime

In the name of justice.
Let Justice Brewer's idea be
carried out with relentless energy
in a lew cases and the trouble
will cease.

A Mote Doctor Who Will Not Hide His
Llcfct A Wonderful Man.
Albany Herald, Jane 26 :
Dr. Darrin has been at the Revere
- House the past two months as a special
lit. During his visit here the doctor has
Men the most talked of professional
man who ever visited our city. This has
b8en largely the result of the fact that,
while he is a regular physician, and a
graduate of the moat reputable schools,
ne has dropped . that of professional
ethics which dictate that a regular phys
iciaa shall not advertise his okill to the
world, and thus give the masses an op
portunity to get the benefit of his su
perior ability. -There seem a to be more
and more professional men in this en
lightened age who refuse to hide their
light under a bushel, all on account of a
false idea that if they make their talents
known to the world by use of printers
ink they must lose their standing in their
chosen profession.
Dr. Darrin is a good example of what
free thinking, independent American
citizen can do if he will not be a slave to
a Code of ethics that is largely dictated
by narrow selfishness. He has advertia
d hia skill for years, after having had
extensive practice in New York, London,
Paris and other metropolitan centers,
ana it is no secret that he has made
money very freely. This need not argue
that he has not given value received, as
far as it can be done by any skilled phys
ician. This money, which is the result
of his skill in medicine as well as adver
Using, he turns to good uses. He spends
fortunes in travel, having made the tour
of the world, and visited all the coun
tries of interest on the map. This travel
has probably enabled him to learn much
In a professional way, out at all events
he has had the enjoyment of it, and paid
for it with his own money.
Daring his stay in Salem and Albany
he has effected many cures, or at least
the voluntary statement of his patients
published in all the papers so indicate.
These persons are known to the public,
and the fact that their statements are

tunity to investigate the cases for them
selves. One case w here a young man

such results, and give others similarly

is the public sorely needs the best skill
that all the doctor can muster, aod
ought not to be deprived ot it by a silly
cade of ethics.
