COWARDS AND MURDERERS.
Outbreaks of mob violence are
becoming so frequent in the East
ern and Souttiern states, that the
whole country is aroused and the
press of all sections is asking,
"Where will it end?" There is
a disposition to lay the blame for
these acts of anarchy upon the
negro, and in many instances
the pulpit has offered palliation
for the crimes of the mob. He
who takes this attitude is devoid
of civic common sense, and is
guilty of giving encouragement
to the enemies of society.
The mob that howls in derision
at the ofSceis of the law, de
stroys the property of the state,
and drags a defenseless wretch to
the stake, is not composed ot out
raged citizens compelled by the
law's delay to mete out justice,
but it is a band of cowardly mur
derers, taking advantage of op-
oortunitv to satisfy their lust for
devilishness. They are notaveng
ers, but beasts drunk with license.
Hostility toward the negro is not
what inspires them to acts of law
, lessness; their leaders hate the
law and all who represent it.
At Danville, HI., a few days
ago a mob of would-be lynchers
was frustrated by the plucky
sheriff in its attack upon the jail,
behind the bars of which a cring
ing blackman begged for protec
tion. The sheriff sent deputies
into the ; city to warn the mob
that he would protect the jail
even though blood should flow.
The warning was not heeded, and
the mob was soon howling like
wolves. Even after the attack
upon the jail had been in pro
gress for fifteen minutes the sher
in refused to snoot or do more
than anmonish the leaders of the
mdb.
When his wife came to his side
armed with a rifle and said she
was determined to aid in the de
fense, the sheriff acted with stern
effect, and even this action was
not had until two shots had been
fired at him and his wife and two
deputies, who stood beside him

"He's only bluffing," came the
yell, and another shot sought to
murder him. He then shot at the
feet of the mob, and when they
had secured the battering ram
with which to beat down the
jail, he fired at the hands that
held the instrument which later
broke the doors.
This is the story of the shoot
ing told by those who witnessed
the tragic affair.

that mob, and the man who sup-

murders a president or kills

This blot On Mr. Osboi ne is
unfortunate. Few men gifted as
he have ever come within our
midst. He was a man with
matchless vocal powers, and was
far above the average in culture,
intellect and eloquence. The
fact that he still retains the garb
of a minister, in the eyes of the
world, enlarges the oflense, and
does an irreparable injury to the
cause of right which he would
fain represent.
