HERE WAS A MAN.
Of the long;
list of illustrious
names tnat stud me pages oi j
the his'ory of the Republic, none !
shines with purer lustre than that
of William McKinley. For
more than thirty years he stood
in the fierce light that beats upon
the path of public life, and it but
served to enhance his virtues and
Illuminate the beauty of his
character. His fame will grow
with the years.
A statute ot the late President
is to be erected in the city of
SDrinpfield. Massachusetts, and
there has been much discussion
as to where it :shall be placed.
In a recent sermon, on "Man and
His Mission," delivered in that
city, Rev. Howard Mudie, re
ferring, to this matter, said:
Where shall his statue be put
in this city of Springfield. Par
don me if as a on of Britain, !
make bold to say : Let it be put
in the most conspicuous place
and upon the most trodden street
in all the city, the place where
busy men of business shall in
passing to and fro, from home to
counter and from mart to mart
behold him who was in very deed
the incarnation of honor and
right. Let it be put where the
wayfarer passing along his way
shall still behold the beloved lace
of the great and good President,
who soueht to make life for his
own people and for other? pure
and true and helpful. Let it be
put where children can . readily
behold it, so that seeing him
they may come to love what he
loved, the things that make for
righteous, prosperous citizenship.
Put it where it shall be seen by
men of all sorts and conditions,
whether men want to see it or no.
And every man will want to see
it whatever be his political bent',
save some very little men who
seek to make themselves big by
the cheap notoriety that comes
from belittling the world's truly
great men. Put it where the
public man aud the private citi
zen shall be campelled to behold
the face and form of one of
God's great, true, noble hearted
gentlemen.
Was Tired of Life.
In a fit of despondency, Vera
, Ridenour swallowed a quantity
of carbolic acid and died in ter
rible agony at her nome at Big
Elk last Monday evening. News
of the unfortunate affair was
brought to this city early Tues
day morning by Mr. January,
who came here to secure a coffin
for the unfortunate girl. The
poison was taken at 5 o'clock in
the afternoon and death did not
result until three hours later.
Members of the family discov
ered, her condition when it was
too late to save her life. Save a
note, in which she stated that she
was tired of life, -no explanation
can be made for her rash act.
Vera was the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. William Ridenour and
she was born in this county in
1885. Attractive in appearance,
and possessing a winning person
ity she had many friehds. She
graduated . from the Corvallis
Public School last Jine, and her
teachers speak of her as a bright
and studious pupil. By her
schoolmates she was loved for
her cheerful disposition. ' Be
cause she was so light of heart,
her suicide seems the more diffi
cult to understand.
While attending school she re
sided at the home of Mr. and
-. Mrs. Samuel King. It was her
fondest desire to remain here
with the 'friends she had made
during her school days, and she
secured employment at the .Cbip
manrestaurant and prepared to
spend the summer in Corvallis.
But her parents insisted that she
she should come to her home at
Big Elk. She dutifully obeyed,
although the sacrifice of pleasure
here cost her many bitter tears.
She told Mrs. Chipman and Mrs.
King that life in the mountains
was almost unendurable to her,
and that she would be of age
shortly and would return to town.
It is believed that she brooded
over fancied wrongs, and in a fit
of melancholy decided to end
what seemed misery to her.
The funeral occurred at Big
Elk Wednesday. - Besides her
parents other surviving relatives
are: Mrs; Riley Youn, 01 Cor
rallis; Mrs; U: G. Berry and
-Mrs. 'Lamar, of Peoria; a brother
in Portland, and a brother and
sister at Big Elk.

Important Contest Case.
A contest of more thau usual i or
importance was begun m luc
land office at Oregon City last
Monday. It is of t'spccial local
interest becau.-o the e.tryniui j
belong in this ticiIib uh-'od, mul
the land benr conttsku lu sin
this count). The Oregouuu
says :
"Important is the contest be
cause an entire rection of heavily
timbered land located near Cor
vallis, Benton county, is involv
ed. It is estimated that the sec
tion contains 1 6.000.000 feet of
finctiuiber. There are lour entry-
men, each having hied upon a
quarter section, and there are as
many contestants on the ground
that the entrynien abandoned
and did not prove up properly on
the land.
"All four cases are being
hotly, contested, several attorneys
being employed on either side
Hedges & Galloway appear for
the contestants, while W. D
Fenton and K. A. Miller are
counsel for the entrvmen. who
are Charles W. Spaulding, Lil
liau E. Spaulding. Edna M.
Spaulding and Charles A. Spauld
ing. The fact that Mr. Penton
is associated with the case in de
fense of the original eutrymen
gives rise to the suspicion that
the Southern Pacific Company is
interested in vhe land, and the
further fact that the railroad com
pany owns two adjoining sections
strengthens this belief."
The entrynien deny that the
Southern Pacific Company is in
any way interested in the laud in
question. There is about 20,
000,000 feet of timber on the con
tested section, which is located
20 miles southwest of this city.
Two entries are now being con
tested at Oregon City. The
other cases will be heard at the
county clerk's office in this city
about the middle of next mauth.
Council Notes.
The city council met in spec
ial session "July 24-th and trans
acted the following business:
The sewer committee reported
that they had secured the right
of way through block 18, N. B
and P. Averys addition, the
property of Glara Beach, for the
sum of $20; and that they had
given her an order on the police
judge for the amount to be ap
plied to her first assessment
The report was adopted, and
the council passed .a resolution
ratifying the action of the com
mittee. It seems that there is
no alley through the property in
question, and the city must pay
for right .of way in such in
stances, or prosecute a suit to
condemn the property.
The act of the council in let
ting contract to John Ingle for
construction of a sewer through
block 5 j original town of Marys
ville, was recinded.
The council ; passed an ordi
nance ordering the constructing
of a sewer, through blocks 18 and
19, N. B. and P. Averys addi
tion. .-. ' . ' -
" The matter of constructing a
sewer through blocks 4 and 5,
original town of - Marysville, was
referred to the sewer committee.
Upon motion the mayor ap
pointed a committee . of three,
with P. Avery as chairman, to
confer with the water company
with reference to rates. 1
The police judge was instruct
ed to give the water company
legal notice of the action of the
council at its meeting July 13th,
regarding the rate the city shall
pay, for water. . - :
A motion carried to allow the
water company the rates paid by
Portland for flushing sewers, dur
ing the summer months. ,
