TUESDAY, JULY 7, 1913.
IOWA REPUBLICANS.
The Iowa republicans li.-ive
eld their state conventio , pub
ihed their platform and named
leir candidates. If any one
hoped to see factional strife
mark the proceedings of the con
vention he has been disappointed.
If any teared there would be
such strife he has seen how
groundless his feais have been.
The proceedings were most har
monious. With one exception
the candidates were nominated
by acclamation.
It was hoped by the enemies of
protection that there would be a
fierce contest over the tariff plank
ofoLr Dlatiorm. but there was
4 i
not It declares for full and ade
quate protectioa and for revision
of schedules when revision be
comes necessary. This is all
that the most ultra-protectionist
desires. The principle of pro
tection will be maintained. The
friends of protection will give the
tariff all needed revision, when
ever and wherever the changing
conditions of trade render duties
either too high or too low.
The policy of reciprocity is en
dorsed "as the natural comple-
, ment of protection." It builds up
foreign trade and finds an outlet
for our surplus.
The plank on trusts declares
"that they shall be so regulated
and controlled as to prevent mo
nopoly, promote competition and
in the fullest measure subserve
and advance the public good." .
Without reservation the eHtire
administration of President Roose
velt is commended and his nom
ination as his own successor is
desired. .' . .
Altogether the platform can
not fail to receive the hearty ap
proval of republicans everywhere.
It is a calm, considerate and
judicious statement of republi
can principles and purposes.
It is often asserted that plat
forms mean nothing; they are
intended only to gain votes and
should not be taken seriously.
This is not true of the republi
can party's platforms. The par
ty has always had well defined
principles and policies.. It has
- always had the courage to state
these in clear unmistakable
terms. The timid and the, trim
mer have had small influence in
formulating its statement of prin
ciples and purposes. This is one
of the strong elements of the
party's popularity, it means
what it says and stands by its
utterances.
It is certain that Iowa republi
cans forsake no party principle.
It is equally certain that they
have no new principle nor doubt
ful policy to thrust upon the par
ty. When their delegates come
to the next national conven
tion they will be found in per
fect accord with their associates
from all the other states.
So far as the republican party
is concerned its principles and
policies have been tried and. ap
proved. Our wonderful material
development, our industrial in
dependence and our financial
prosperity record the wisdom and
the beneficence of republican ad
ministration. With its candi
date for president already selected
by the people its principles and
polices will mark the conduct of
the governrhent for years to
come.

THE NEW PLAN.
Saperlntellditit Detltnan's Ides of Gradu
at ion Exercise for Country Schools
Proves a Great Success.
The new plan adopted by Su
perintendent Denman of holding
regular graduation exercises for
pupils in the country proved to
be a ereat success. The first of
these exercises . was held at Bell-
June 30th. The large Grange
hall was too small to accommodate
all who attended, and many stood
in the aisles. The members o:
the class included Claire Starr,
Bertha Coon, Clyde Starr, Belle
Edwards, Earl Edwards, Josie
Benham, of Dist No. 23; Hovey
Belknap, Orr Kyle, Carrie Bel
knap, of Dist. No. 06: Cora
Hawley and Pearl Hammer, o
Dist. No. 26; IdaZierolf ot Dist.
No. ;o; Tempy Ingram, Edith
Martin. Eva Martin, of Dist.
No. 25.
The program was as follows
Music, Bellountain band; Invo
cation, Rev. Skidmore: Saluta
tory, Bertha Coon; Recitation
Tempy Ingram; Essay, Grace
Starr; Solo, "Klanging ot the
Forge," Mr. J. R. Pruett; Reci-
1 ration, Eva Martin; Essay, Ida
Zierolf; Recitation, Pearl Ham
mer, Song, Quartette; Edith
Martin; Recitation, Cora Haw
ley; Solo, "Turn Key," Mrs. vJ.
Edwards; Recitation, Claire
Starr; Class Prophesy, Hovey
Belknap; Valedictory, Belle Ed
wards; Address-to Class, Mr. M.
M. Waltz; Song, Quartette, Pre
sentation of Diplomas, C. I.
Starr, Supt. Polk County; Music,
Bellfountain Band.
All pupils taking part in the
exercises gave a good account of
themselves. The valedictory of
Miss Edwards will appear in a
later issue of the Gazette,
The solos by Mr. Pruett and Mrs.
Edwards were sung in good
voice. The song by Gretta,
Floyd, 'and Hazel Bristow won
hearty applause. Txie quartette,
consisting of Mrs. J. H. Ed
wards, Mrs. Waltz, Messrs. Wil
bur Starr and Pruett. furnished
some excellent selections. Mr.
M. M. Waltz in his address to
the class gave some practical and
useful suggestions. He said the
class had learned to think for
themselves. That some prob
lems of lrfe would only be solv
ed step by step. Every member
is the architect of his own future.
Supt. C. h. Starr, of Polk
county, proved himself to be a
forceful and interesting speaker.
His words were full of inspira
tion and timely advice to the
class. He congratulated the
class uppn their successful work,
and the citizens of this section
of the county for the interest and
enthusiasm which they were giv
ing their schools. He said that
these exercises for boys and
girls of rural schools was the
only case in Oregon where a su
perintendent had taken up the
work in this fitting manner.
Supt. Starr threw into his ad
dress the same life and interest
which he is putting in the
schools of his county..
Much was added , to the suc
cess of the exercises by decora
tion's which were made by the
class. At the close of the regu
lar program an ice cream soci
able was given by the BelKoun
tain band which proved a grand
success.

IS GOING TO RAJSE YOUR RENT
He has been wanting to for a long time and now that the Fair is
coming he has a good excuse for iloing so arsd he is going to doit.
YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY IT. Nineteen cents a day will pay for a
$1000.00 home Thirty eight cents a dav will pay for a $2u00.Ol home.
JOIN THE FRATERNAL ORDER. You buy any home or farm you
want. Yon pick it out yourself. We will pay for it. No inteiest. You
simply pay $1000.00 for a $1000.00 home. Could anything be easier? Yon
ar paying more than that now for rent. What is the use of helping the
rich to get richer. Did you ever see a millionaire who made his money by
days labor? You never did nor you never will. You must invest your
money in order to make anything. You must combine and co-operate
with other if you are to mak e money without the hardest kind of knocks.
The laboring classes are getting in worse condition every day. Now this
is a call from laboring men to laboring men to combine. Don't be a mug
wump. Doat be superstitious. It is by the use of their brains that
Capital succeeds in holding you where yon are. With the little money
that most of us have we can do nothing. In order to fijiht Capital witn
their own weapons WE MUST COMBINE. J. Pierpont Morgan has some
fine ideas. We can put them ia practice as well as he can. Don't put it
off. Act immediately. r Every rent payer, or man who wants to better his
condition; every man who pays interest must be enrolled in our Fraternal
Order by tfce last of this month. If jou have to wait when you come up to
be enrolled that is all right. It will pay you to do it. If you cannot come

Order of Fraternal Home Buyers, .

Gentlemen:
I wish to become a member of your Order and secure a home on
your plan provided I find nothing objectionable in the plan on reading
over your literature. Please hold the lowest number open on your books
for me and send me further particulars.
Very sincerely yours,
f
This will suffice to hold the matter open for you until you can come
- in person or until we can write you further particulars of our plan. It
does not obligate you to anything. The only thing the application does is
to hold the lowest number open for you uvtil you cab investigate. You are
sure to become a member as soon as you understand, and it will pay you
to send in the application if you cannot come immediately as we cannot
place everyone in their homes at once and our motto is '"first come, first
served."" Our offices are open until 6:30 p. m.each evening to accommo-
date those who cannot come to be enrolled during the day. Remember"
this is an organization of laboring men for laboring men and if vou become
one of us you have a voice in the transaction of the business. Our object is
to stop your rent bill, lift your mortgage, or to offer you an investment that
will net you more than your labor. Let us repeat, don't be superstitious.
It costs nothing to investigate and if you cannot come immediately send
in the application and this announement is your authority to reclaim the
same if you dqn't find everything satisfactory.
