AT KIEL.
The reception which the Ger
man government and people ga e
to our little squadron of war ves
sels commanded by Admiral Cot
ton is pleasing evidence that Ger
many will need to have a very
grave cause for it before she e n
gages in war with us. The Ger
man ruler and intelligent Ger
mans have come to a better un
derstanding of the great Ameri
can republic. They see that our
purposes are those of peace. We
seek war with none. It is plair
ly our policy to lead the nations
in whatever things may elevate
mankind. We desire that mn
everywhere shall become more
intelligent, more prosperous, free
and happy.
We are of the same racial
stirps as the Germans and actu
ated by ideals and purposes as
high, as noble as any entertained
by them. They see these things,
and see also that our greatness is
also material. We are in all
things the greatest people on
earth. We are not conscious
of our own power. We know
and we would have the world
know that our purposes are right
and of highest benefit to man
kind. It back of these the na
tions see more of energy, cour
age and material greatness than
we are accustomed to contem
plate, it is well for them, well
for us.
Kiel is the most important
harbor of Germany. Its ap

proaches, as well as the city it
The city has a history running
tnrougn a period ot more tnan
650 years, yet it is quite possible
that it never ' witnessed an event
of greater promise of good to men
than the reception to our fleet re
ceived in her spacious harbor.
These scenes of royal welcome
will 'be repeated at Portsmouth,
England. Our vessels will an
chor in the inner harbor, a privi
lege never before granted the
war vessels of any people. Here
is England's most important
naval station, and here, too, to
the history of quite 700 years will
be added a new chapter presaging
peace and amity between the
two mightiest nations on earth,
speaking the same language and
pursuing the same high purposes.
The world will be benefited by
these international courtesies.
Of themselves they are of sec
ondary importance, but they
seem to be part of a divine
scheme for cementing these three
peoples into closer relations and
and more perfect unity of pur
pose to advance the cause of
human right and righteousness.
Hammond Says, Extend C. & E.
. A. B. Hammond, in a Port
land interview said: "The way
for Portland to get a railroad into
interior Oregon is to go ahead
and extend the Corvallis & East
ern. If you do that you wont
have to wait for Harriman's veri
form appendix to get well. Your
citizens are pursuing a mistaken
policy. They cannot expect that
Harriman will put his money in
here and allow you to sandbag
him when he's done. Nor would
I put in money and be sandbagg
ed, either. You people make a
mistake if you think he is going
to permit you to holdup the
country through him.
See here: I will make traffic ar
rangements with any company
that will connect with the Cor
vallis & Eastern. Or, I will sell
the' road. It has the easiest
grade of any route into Eastern
Oregon. It will reach that coun
try by a two per cent grade,
The Columbia Southern route
cannot be compared with the
Santiam at all. Ask the engin
eers; they know. Ask Kennedy
of the O. R. & N.'; he knows.
The Corvallis & Eastern has 143
miles of track. By means of
spurs it will open to Portland
great areas of new coun try. You
Portland people can use it to get
into the Siletz country, besides
runninjr over the Cascades into
Eastern Oregon.
"Why extend the Columbia
- Southern? Ic has already reach
ed the limit of its productive
country. It does very well as a
spur or feeder, but as a rond for
getting into the interior it is the
poorest of any."
Casterline has a Rival.
Every inventor of some useful
device, or dicoverer of scientific
secrets of value o the human
Tace, has to face a pretender who
claims to have prior rights Edi-1
;o, Roetgen, Marconi, and all
the others have had this experi
ence. Now B. J. Casterline is
confronted by one Zachriah Tay
lor Clark, a resident of Portland,
who claims to have the exclusive
right to emplov a chemical pro
cess for the hardening "f iron and
steel.
The Claik-Xeill process is
known as the Electro Tempering
and Toughening Compound, and
Mr. Clark, who has purchased
the rights of his former partner,
Neill, declares that if Casterline
does not at once cease infringe
ment upon his rights he will
carry the matter into the courts.
"I do not accuse Mr. Caster
line of willfully appropriating
my discovery to his own ends,"
Z. T. Clark said last Tuesday,
"but I hereby warn him that he
must accord to mc my rights. I
worked for 20 years to perfect
the steel-hardening process and I
do not propose to have the work
of a lifetime go for nothing.
"I am at present in communi
cation with a firm that is to put
my invention on the market, and
within a reasonable time expect
to realize an independent fortune.
I worked hard at the discovery
and have scraped and scimped
and almost starved since it was
perfected in the effort to bring
about its acceptance by some
company with a sufficient amount
of capital to cause it to bring
returns. Mr. Casterline must
cease his use of my invention."
Mr. Clark says that once in the
past he had an experience similar
to what he terms "the Casterline
affair." H. B. Depoy, an Indi
ana man, annouueed his discov
ery of a steel-hardening process
and sought to obtain a patent
upon the same. Clark appeared
and contested his claim and De
poy was compelled' to retire de-
feated from the field

All readers of this paper are by this

truthfulness. They have received relief
at the haads of the great benefactor, Dr.

THE LANDLORD
IS GOING TO RAISE YOUR RENT
He has been wanting to for a long time and now that the Fair is
coming he has a good excuse for doing so and he is going to do it.
YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY IT. Nineteen cents a dav will pay for a
$1000.00 home Thirtv eight cents a dav will pay for a $2oOO.OO home,
JOIN THE FRATERNAL ORDER. You buy any home or farm you
want. You pick it out yourself. We will pay for.it. No inteiest. You
simply pay $1000 00 for a $1000.00 home. Could anything be easier? You
ar paying more than that now for rent. What is the use of helping the
rich to get richer. Did you ever see a millionaire who made his money by
days labor? You never did nor you never will. You must invest your
money in order to make anything. You must combine and co-operate
with others'if you are to make money without the hardest kind of knocks.
The laboring classes are getting in worse condition every day. Now this
is a call from laboring men to laboring men to combine. Don't be a mug
wump. Don't be superstitious. It is by the use of their brains that
Capital succeeds in holding you where yon are. With the little money
that most of us have we can do nothing. In order to fight Capital with
their own weapons WE MUST COMBINE. J. Pierpont Morgan has some
fine ideas. We can pat them in practice as well as he. can. Don't put it
off. Act immediately. Every rent payer, or man who wants to better his
condition; every man who pays interest must be enrolled in our Fraternal
Order by the last of this month. If you have to wait when you come up to
be enrolled that is all right. It will pay yon to do it. If you cannot come
in fill out the following application and mail it to us :
Order of Fraternal Home Buyers,
Portland, Oregon.
Gentlemen :
I wish to become a member of your Order and secure a home on
your plan provided I find nothing objectionable in the plan on reading
over your literature. Please hold the lowest number open on your books
for me and send me further particulars.
Very sincerely yours,
This will suffice to hold the matter open for you until you can come
in person or until we can write you further particulars of our plan. It
does not obligate you to anything. The only thing the application does is
to hold the lowest number open for you until you can investigate. You are
sure to become a member as soon as you understand, and it will pay you
to send in the application if you cannot come immediately as we cannot
place everyone in their homes at once and our motto is "first come, first
served." Our offices are open until 6:30 p. m. each evening to accommo
date those who cannot come to be enrolled during the day. Remember
this is an organization of laboring men for laboring men and if vou become
one of us you have a voice in the transaction of the business. Our object is
to stop your rent bill, lift your mortgage, or to offer you an investment that
will net you more than your labor. Let us repeat, don't be superstitious.
It coBts nothing to investigate and if you cannot come immediately send
in the application and this announement is your authority to reclaim the '
same if you don't find everything satisfactory.
