NOT E- ASILY CONDONED.
It is qui' ie improbable the mon- j
archial governments of Europe i
will qui;tly condone the crime
of those who plotted and execut
ed the assassination of the late
king and queen of Servia. It is
an offense against monarchy
and a menace to the life of mon
archs. It is of little consequence
that the form of the Servian gov
ernment has not been changed.
There is a strong current of dc
mocracy in the Servian capital
which encouraged this revolution
animated by the hope that the
new government would be more
liberal. Servia is a constitution
al monarchy, the constitution
having: been grafted by the de
posed and murdered king in the
Spring of 1882. Of the legislative
body, which is chosen for three
years, the people elect three
fourths and the king chooses one
fourth cf the members. There
are other liberal provisions in the
constitution which, if properly
regarded, should give the people
liberal government. I lie popu
lation numbers about two mil
lion, but the masses are ignorant,
fanatical and rather turbulent.
Assassination of rulers is a
crime so hideous and repulsive to
all civilized peoples that tke na
tions most nearly concerned in
Servian affairs cannot disregard
this offense. These are Russia
and Austria. They cannot do
less than insist upon the punish
ment of those who planned and
executed the bloody deed. They
may draw Turkey into conflict
with them. This would almost
surely lead to a general European J
war, and certainly result in the
dismemberment of Turkey. Ser
via might be permitted to settle
her own aftairs after her own
manner, even though she brought
the reproach of the nations upon
herself", but Russia cannot permit
this for a measure of such re
proach would fall upon her; be
sides which Russ;a Is ready and
eager to strengthen her position
in the Balkans. Any action
which might hasten the dismem
berment of Turkey would com
mend itself to Russa for she with
out doubt hopes to reap substan
tial benefit upon the disruption of
the Ottoman empire.
Baccalaureate Exercises.
Baccalaureate"" exercises at Ag-
ricultural College Sunday mom-
ing, attracted an audience that
filled the gallery and main floor
of the large armory. The morn
ing was bright and balmy, and
all who attended the exercises
were in a mood to appreciate the
able sermon preached by Rev.
Allen Wilson, of Indianapolis,
and the excellent music by the
choir.
The armory was appropriately
decorated with evergreens and
conservatory flowers and, plants.
From the huge central rafters
hung a banner of gold with the
word "Welcome" inscribed upon
it in letters of purple. Stream
ers of purple and gold floated to
the four corners of the room and
draped the railing of the gallery.
The stage was a bower of ev
ergreen and flowers above which
two large American flags were
draped, and streamers of the Na
tional colors were every where. in
evidence.
Promptly at 10:30 o'clock the
graduating class entered preceded
by the faculty, ministers of the
city, and the choir.
Rev. Wilson took for his theme
"The Image of God," and
preached an eloquent sermon re
plete with practical ideas and
good sense. His text was from
Genesis: "And God Created Man
in His Own Image; in the Image
ot God Created He Him." He
impressed upon the class that
while they had finished their pre
paration for the battle of life,
they had just reached the place
where the value of this prepara
tion would be put to the test.
He warned each one to be prac
tical; to know his or her limita
tion and not aim too high. "It
is fool's play," said he, "to fire
at a target with a 22-pistol, that
can only be reached with a 13
inch gun." Men are not equal
in ability to do the same thing.
To succeed, one must devote his
energies to one line of. endeavor;
select a vocation and become oro
ficient in it. Do not undertake
what is beyond you. Do not be
gin what you have neither the
capacity nor the power to com
plete. The ages are filled with
the examples of unfinished work.
If you have anything worth
saying, say it Do not imagine
that silence alone -will pass ior
wisdom. If you are "a fool the
world will find it out. You have
no more light to hoard up talent
or information than you have to
hoard up gold. "A thought
miser is as bad as a gold miser."
The Play a Success
A surfeit of amusements during
the week did not prevent the
local theatrical company from
playing to a good house, Satur
day night. The. debate at the
College and the announcement
that the public wedding would
certainly take place fit the Carni
val, attracted a great many, but
"My Friend Fron India" is a
play to Conjure with, and the
Onera House was well filled.
The play was produced here
about three vears aeo with a
strong cast, but Saturday night's
performance suffered nothing by
comparison in the estimation of
those who witnessed both per
formances. Only a week was
spent in rehearsal, and as this
was the first appearance of several
members of the cast, some lack of
preparation was noticeable. All
who were present, however, ex-
press themselves weu pieasea
with the entertainment, and as
this was the end sought by those
upon the stage, the performance
may be put down as a success.

DR. DARRIM'S TREATMENT.
Startliae Illustration, of What can be
Accomplished by Electricity.
(Albany Herald.)
The philosophy of his treatment may
be briefly stated thus : Force is spirit in
motion. Vital force is organic motion
or the proper movement of organized
particles as they pass to and from the
human system. Disease, in a word, is
obstruction the result of an impaired
tital force, and it is at least accompauied
if not caused, by deranged organic mo
tion. These arrangements can only be
effected bv calling in the aid of the e!ec
tro-magnetic or vital forces, which ar
n orl iri oil Airro r- 1 hanrraa filr
j powerful ia lhis influence, that "persons
who have many years suffered, have
been restored to health in an almost in
credible space of time. Dr. Darrin
system will not restore a lost member of
the body, or perform other impossibili
ties, but it will, ia a majority of cases,
give relief where other remedies have
failed. The practice is based on the
most strict laws of science, and is in har
mony with sill natural laws. Physicians
of every practice not oidy acknowledge
this power, but receive thn treatment for
themselves and their families, as well as
recommend the treatment to their pa
tients. CAN HEAR A WllisrEll.
To the Editor:
I came to Salem with my daughter,
April 28, i902, to consult Dr. Darrin con
cerning her deafness. After a thorough
examination the doctor took the case un
der treatment, and in one operation and
with the use of electricity, restored' her
hearing, much to our surprise and grati
fication. I was so much pleased with
her cure that I placed myself under the
doctor's care. He has cured an almost
total deafness of one ear, with which I
had beeH afflicted for twenty-three years,
lean be referred to by letter or in per
son, and will gladly answer al questions.

and Poultry Medicine unloads the
bowels and stira np the torpid liver.
It cures every malady or stock if
taken in time. Secure a 25-cent can
of Black-Draught Stock and Poultry
Medicine and it will pav fo; itself ten
times over. Horses work better. Cows
give more milk. Hogs gain flesh.
And hens lay more eggs. It solves the
problem of making as much blood,
flesh and energy as possible out of
the smallest amount of food con
sumed. Buy a can from your dealer.
