A REAC1I0N.
For several years the best skill
ed workmen in each of those arts
fwimnnc skilled labor nave re
luctantly, consented to a general
federation of all labor organizi-
ticm They have urged that the
quians, prganwed by their own
Particular craft should net bs
weed to submit their methods
Of practicing that craft to the
Judgment possibly to the whims
Of men of all other crafts. They
have argued with' more or less
parsistency that each trade was
wholly competent to look alter
its own inteiests and best quali
fied to do so. They favored
the unionizing of all labor but
opposed the federation of all
unions.
Thisdid not suit the purpose
of the organizers of labor.
Their purpose has been to bring
all workmen into their own
proper unions, then to fuse these
into one powerful, all controlling
organization. They have not
wholly accomplished this but
have approximated very nearly
to it, so nearly, indeed, that when
men in one craft have some dif
ference with their employers
which is not at once adjusted, and
not unfrequently adjusted on lines
laid down by those having no
practical knowledge of that craft,
a general strike of all craftsmen
is ordered.
The wrong done here is two
fold. It forces men who have no
grievance whatever, men who
are perfectly contented with the
conditions ot their employment,
to abandon work and waste
months, often, in idleness as a
mark of approval and sympathy
in a contest in which they have
not even a remote interest.
Sympathy is a noble sentiment,
but when it entails loss and hard
ship upon those who express it
and carries no sort of benefit to
others it ceases to be genuine
Sympathy and becomes profound
foolishness.
The general public, too, must
suffer all manner ot inconven
ience, deprivation, hardship and
loss until some trivial difference
existing somewhere in the labor
world is settled.
, It if plain that the power labor
gives to a few leaders has been
used tyrannically, mischievously,
recklessly. It has practiced
shameful wrongs upon both the
honest, intelligent workman and
his dependent ones, and upon the
public in general. '
The boycott and the sympa
thetic strikes, apart from the
violence resorted to by strikers,
are having a reflex action which is
bound to result in a modification
of the labor union. It cannot
meet the approval ot right think
ing men as now conducted. The
great public and hundreds of its
own membership now constitute
the tribunal to which organized
labor must make appeal. There
is nothing more certain than la
bor must do equity before public
sentiment will heed its plea for
equity. It is this unerring pub
lic sense of justice and right
Which will compel a readjust
ment of the duties, powers and
relation of labor unions not only
as related to employers, but to
each other and to the public at
large.
Improved Telephone Service.
The Pacific States Telephone
and Telegraph Company will
commence immediately the work
of rebuilding their Corvallis ex-
Change.
Over thirty new subscribers
have been secured, a list of these
will be published in our next
issue.
A line will be built connecting
Mr. Woodcock's two farms North
west of town and ten other sub
scribers living in this locality
with the city exchange. The
company now has control of Mr.
Fischer's line between Corvallis
and Peoria and 'will open a pub
lic ofiice at that point. It is the
intention of the company to ex
tend this line into Dusty and
Monroe, thus giving these points
direct service with Corvallis.
Twenty-five subscribers have
been secured in Philomath and
and exchange will be started
there.
A rate of 15 cents for switch
ing between Corvallis and Philo
math has been secured and ar
rangements are being made with
the Benton County Lumber Co.
and the Alsea Telephone Co.,
whereby their, lines will connect
with the lines of the Pacific
States Telephone and Telegraph
Co. at Philomath. By this
means subscribers ' in Alsea will
have free switching with Philo
math and for 15 cents connection
with the Corvallis exchange of
225 subscribers besides having
the advantage of being able to
talk direct to any long distance
point.
A Night of Fun
Everything indicates that a
crowded house will greet the per
formance of "My Friend trom
India," at the Opera House to
raonoW night, The play iaac
knowledgtd to be the beat force'
comedy evef stagedj and the fact
that it is produced for the bene
fit of athletics at the College will
attract many who have seen the
play before. Queen Inez and her
suite will hofaor the performers
with their presence, and those
who wish to experience the pleas
ure of sitting with royalty will
have an opportunity.
The cast has been rehearsing
faithfully and a pleasant even
ing's c-ntertainment is assured all
who attend.
To those not familiar with the
plot of the play this short synop
sis will show the possibilities for
fun makiag:
Erastus Underholt, a retired
pork-packer, leaves Kansas City
with his family and goes to New
York with the avowed puipose to
pet his two daughters into socie
ty. When the play open?, they
are about to return to their old
home discouraged and disgusted
at their failure to gain admittance
to the circle of the 400, after
making desperate efforts for three
years,
Underholt's son, Charlts, has
been out on a sptee and awakes
late in the morning to find a man
in bed with him whom he has
never seen before. In the strang
er's pocket he finds a copy of the
"Light of Asia," and, struck
with a brilliant idea, he deter
mines to palm his uninvited guest
off on Underholt, senior, as an
Indian pundit, to explain his late
'arrival home. His father takes
the bait, but sees in the "pundit"
an opportunity to lure society to
his home. Shaver's efforts to
escape and Underholt's efforts to
prevent him furnish unlimited
amusement.

Cared By Dr. Darrin,
(Albany Democrat.)
PobtijAnd, Ok. I hold it to be a duty
as well as a pleasure to make known,
through the press, that which of all other
things is most essentia, viz; the way to
cure pain and sickness. I was confined
to my room with sciatic rheumatism,
kidney trouble, infatuation of neck of
bladder, general indisposition. Could
not sleep more than an hour at a time.
All means I tried proved unavailing.
I was prompted to visit Dr. Darrin
through the advice of my friends, who
had been cured by him, though I must
say that I had little faith that electricity
would enre me. I came to the doctor on
crutches. Two weeks' treatment has
cured me, so I have thrown a nay my
crutches, and my other complaints have
all disappearod, so I can take command
of my engine. I will answer all ques
tions by letter or in person at 490 Com
mercial street, East Portland.

1 havt had occasion to use
your
Black-Draught Stock and Poultry Medi
cine and am pleased to tay that I never
used anything for stock that gave half as
good satisfaction. I heartily recom
mend it to all owners of stock.
J. B. BELSHER, St. Louis. Ma
Sick stock or poultry should not
eat cheap stock food any more than
sick persons should expect to be
cared by food. When your stock
and poultry are sick give them.med
icine. Don't stuff them with worth
less stock foods. Unload the bowels
and stir up the torpid liver and the
animal will b& cured, if it be possi
ble to cure it. Black-Draught Stock
and Poultry Medicine rmloads the
bowels and stirs up the torpid liver.
It cures every malady of stock if
taken in time. Secure a 25-cent can
of Black-Draught Stock and Poultry
Medicine and it will pay f o? itsolf ten
times over. Horses work better. Cows
give more milk. Hogs gain flesh.
And hens lay more eggs. It solves the
problem of making as much blood,
flesh and energy as possible out of
smallest amount of food con-
