THE CORVALUS GAZETTE,
TUESDAY, MAY i2, 1903.
IN PARTY HARMONY-.
Mr Reames says neither party
tan abandon the Philippines.
We think this is trne, for public
sentiment has now so firmly crys-
talized around the republican
purpose, expressed immediately
we acquired possession of those
islands of retaining them that no
party could survive the public
odium of abandonment.
But Mr. Reames is not able to
give authoritative declaration of
his party's purpose. The only
authorative statement of demo
cratic purpose on this subject is
the last national platform cf that
party. . This declared in favor of.
abandoning the Philippines, per
mitting the Fi ippinos to govern
themselves as best they might,
or, as a democratic statesman
phrased it "go to the devil."
We are justified in sa ing that
abandonment of the islands is
the democaatic purpose and that
Mr. Reames, who is a democrat
if anything, is in harmony with
his tartv. .
But the democratic candi late
is in favor of unrestricted free
trade with the Philippines. On
this ooint he has no advantage
over any one of Oregon's mem
" bers of congress in either branch
and none whatever over Mr. Her
mann. The commercial spirit of
tne Northwest desires free trade
with the PhilioDines. The ma
jority in congress deemed this in
expedient at present, but made a
large reduction in tariff rates in
favor, of insular commerce.
The republican policy will ulti
mately give free trade with the
islands bv retaining them and
j -
bringing them into closer rela
tions with us. The policy of
abandonment carreis us far in the
other direction, would indeed
take the control of Philippine
trade quite out of our hands.
It is easily seen how illogically
our democratic candidate reasons,
forced to it because as a good
democrat he must 'stand on
the national platform of his party
and as a successful candidate he
must secure republican votes.
We are not concerne'd as to his
securing republican support. , He
is a democrat in harmony with
bis party and will not be permit
ted to assume any different char
acter.

Shows Coming Saturday.
:- Saturday is circus day and the
country lass and ber beau will be
in town early" to enjoy with the
city folks a gala" day of pleas
ure and amusement. Norris &
Rowe's Big Shows will be here.
Since the days our childhood cir
cus, when old Dan Rice was the
brightest shining star in the con
stellation of arenic celebrities, it
has been' the usage of traveling
shows to give a street parade and
although Norris & Rowe have
nothing of the old school "flavor"
about their shows, but a thor
oughly up to date aggregation,
they still adhere to the- old cus
tom and give a grand parade
each - morning at 11 o'clock.
The principal reason for continu
ing the old custom is that while
they, are giving their thousands
of patrons a free treat they are,
by displaying their magnificent
animals and equipage, advertis
ing their splendid performances
and showing the wonderful
growth of their aggregation since
its former visit. The show is too
well known to require a detailed
description, suffice it to say they
always bring a multitude of new
acts and novel features which are
equally enjoyable - to old and
young. '
