FBI PAY, OCT. 10,1902.
POLITICAL CHICANERY.
It is discreditable to both po
litical parlies in Pennsylvania,
contemptible in Gov. Stone and
humiliating to her patriotic peo
ple that selfish partisanship and
poll iica i iDinguc
preveated a settlement of the
miners' strike but have intensi
fied its conditions.
It ha long been apparent that
the main contention is the rec
ognition by the operators of the
Miners' Union. So soon as -it
became plainly probable that the
mines could be operated by non
union miners, but for the lawless
Violence of the strikers which
the civil authorities could not
quell, the governor should have
pnt a foice of troops in the field
alequate to protect life and
property and enforce obedience
to the laws. The state at an
ejormous expense maintains a
finely equipped, well disciplined
and most efficiently organized
National Guard of above 10,000
men. Not one-third of this force
was placed on duty. Until forc
ed by public sentiment and the
critical condhion which have
arisen he did not call out an ade
quate force to give protection to
the men desirine to work. In
vain the operators declare that if
their men were protected they
could and would operate their
works. Governor Stone chose to
nlav small oolitics. He wishes
to succeed Senator Penrose. Sen
ator Quay is believed to be op
posed to Stone's ambition and
the legislative nominations
throughout the state do not favor
the governor's ambitious scneme
Out of a spirit of petty revenge
he has been doing all he may
dare to discredit the republican
party in the state. Naturally
enoueh the opposition party
sees nossible advantage to itself
in intensifying and prolonging
the struggle.
The mine operators have offer
ed all they reasonably should.
They will deal directly with any
of their men claiming a griev
ance, and failiag to adjust it will
submit to the arbitration of the
court of common pleas for the
district in which the mine is lo
cated. Nothing- can be fairer
and more practicable ., than this,
but since it does not recognize
the Miners' Union the labor
leaders refuse to accept it.
Intriguing politicians encour
age them to hold out. The ig
norant miners are not susceptible
to moral force jiot plainly backed
by compelling physical force.
- The exercise "of this would be for
their good, but the party bosses
are not considering the welfare
of the oierators, the- miners nor
the people.
This is the' problem as present
ed to the consideration of the
President It is an ugly, intri
cate and delicate situation. There
is not now the shadow of just
contention remaining. The
public welfare is now the para
mount consideration. Already
shivering thousands appeal for a
speedy settlement and resump
tion of work. Public sentiment
has compelled Gov. Stone to act.
The state will now force obedi
ence to the laws and restore or
der, or failing in this the strong
er hand of the United States will
be laid upon the lawless.
Possibly it was this which in
duced Gov. Stone to put the en
tire force of state troops in the
field.
In a day or so we shall know
if the mines can be operated.
We believe they can and will be,
and that it will be long before
another strike is entered upon.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack hall epect Saturday
and Sunday with Folk county relatives.
Jack states that he is somewhat alarmed
since the appearance in & recent OazBtte
of an article concerning his ability, or in
ability, as a hog doctor. He fears bein
sued for mal-practice and intends study
ing up on "hogology" with a view to ob
taining his "sheepskin."
As in other parts of the county, crops
hereabouts were very disappointing this
year, and instead of having a pocketful
f "twenties" to show for his year's la
bor, th,e farmer has barely enough cash
this fall to "square up.'' ,
Ideal weather the past fen- weeks has
enabled the rancher to do the odd jobs
about his place that always accumulate
just after harvest, and which have to be
disposed of before plowing begins.
Instead of selling potatoes this fall,
most of the farmers of this locality will
have to buy at least a part of their win
ter supply. The crop is small and the
size of the spuds is likewise decidedly
small. Muldoon.

Sick stock or poultry should not
eat cheap stock food any more than
sick persons should expect to be
cored by food. When your stock
