ASK FOR INJUNCTION.
Next Monday. Sep. 29th, was
the day advertised by O.e sheriff
as the time when the property,
known as the Geo. S. Coe land-,
was to be sold for delinquent
taxes. Yesterday, the Oregon
Pacific Colonization Company,
through its attorneys. Weather
ford & Wyatt. and E. E Wilson,
filed papers in "the clerk's office
to restrain the sheriff from selling
the lands included in the adver
tisement, which this company
recently purchased from the
Coast Land and Live Stock Co
In asking: for this injunction the
plaintiff alleges iregnlarity in
the aessment and procedure,
and the matter may bi heard at
the November term of court.
Meantime there may be no sale
of anv of the property until the
court" decides in the matter; and
if it should find for the plaintiff,
of course the sheriff will make
no sale.
The plaintiff further alleges
that the county court of Benton
county had no authority to issue
the warrant commanding the
sheriff to make sales ot the prop
erty, and that the warrant is null
and void.
"That the said sale if one
should be made would be void,
but would cast a cloud upon tht
title of these olaintiffs in and to
said lands and by reason thereof
plaintiff would be greatly injured
and the sale of their lands pre
vented; and that plaintiff has no
plain, speedy remedy at law."
Wherefore, plaintiff asks for an
iniunction aeainst the defendant,
directing: him to desist from the
sale of the said premises or any
part thereof, under or by virtue
of warrants issued for the years
i8o: to iooo. inclusive; and that
permanent iniunction be made
for said years, and asks for costs
and disbursements.
The matter will probably be
acted uoon immediately, and a
temporary injunction granted un
til the matter can be heard.

Went Through the Fire.
Graves Robinson, -son of Capt.
G. A. Robinson of this city, ar
rived home from Elma, Wash.
Tuesday. He left Corvallis last
spring to go to that section,
where he has a brother, Franklin
Robinson. He reports having
had some thrilling experiences
in that section during the great
forest fire that swept that part of
the country recently.
Graves was out with a survey,
ing party and was obliged to get
out of the forest hurriedly in or
der to save his life. He and his
party managed to reach an In
dian reservation, which proved
to be a place ot safety. They
found the Indians greatly excited
over the terrible condition ot af
fairs. The "medicine man" ol
the tribe was agoing through all
sorts of holy hokus-pokus and
declaring that the world was
coming to an end; that the Great
Spirit had sent a fire to consume
the world and all of the people.
Here Graves -and his companions
remained in safety until the fire
ha4 run its course.
When the party reached Ray's
mill, where Franklin Robinson
resides, they found that every
thing around the mill had been
destroyed by the flames. It was
only by heroic efforts that the
men at the mill had been able to
get the women and children to a
prairie about three-quarters of a
mile from the mill. In order to
reach this point they were oblig
ed several times to literally pass
through the flames.
In order to save the mill,
Franklin Robinson was wrapped
up in gunny sacks and sent to
the roof of the structure, where
he plied the hose. The engineer
remained at the engine and oper
ated the pumps. Perhaps it was
foolhardy, but in this manner
they saved the mill and it was
the only one saved in that sec
tion. But few men remained
near the mill with Franklin and
the engineer.
Graves relates that the streams
of that section were full of dead
animals, deer, bear and other
reatures of the forest, that had
been driven into the water by
the flames. Cinders and ashes
were carried miles from tha fire
and itrewn on the ground and
beaches to a depth of several
inches.
Golbmbla Conference.
The sessions of Columbia Con
ference came to a close the first
of the week. The conference
was cf great interest to many of;
our people and the sessions were j
marked by able addresses - and
discussions. Bishop Duncan, of j
Spartenburg, S. C, was the pre-!
siding officer; and Dr. .W. E.
Vaughn, editor of the Pacific
Christian Advocate, of San Fran
cisco, Dr. J. Hammond, general
secretary of education, of Nash
ville, Tenn., and Dr. W. T.
Lambreth, general missionary
secretary, of Nashville, Aenn.,
.. 3 j :
ana many otner noiea ucviuts
were in attendance.
Various addresses and discus
sions, relating to the church and
its work disclosed the lact tnat
during the past year there had
been a healthy increase in tne
membership of the M. E. church,
S
South. It was fouud that tne
districts represented at Columbia
conference were in an unusually
good condition financially.
I
E. L. Fitch was re-appointed
presiding elder of Willamette
district; Rev. W. B. Smith, who
has filled the pulpit in the M. Ii.
church, South, of this city, dur
ing past year, was appointed to
supply the pulpit at Junction
City; Rev. Tohn Reaves was-appointed
to fill the vacancy made
by Rev. Smith's removal.
