IE CBRMIIS GHETTL
FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 1902.
TONGUE STRONGLY ENDORSED.
Even the inot ardent supjKTt
ers of Mr. Tongue were surpiied
at the size of his majority in thi
county. Two ears ago he le
ceived but 31 votes more than
Bernard Daly in Benton count'. ,
and his majority this year over J.
K. Weatheriord is 198. Mr.
Tongue could ask for no highrr
endorsement; the people ot Ben
ton county rouid give no better
evidence of appieciation of his
servict-s and confidence in his
ability.
While it was known that Mr.
Tongue bad pained in populari
ty and his coiue m congress
met with etneial approval, it
was belitvtd that Mr. Weather
ford would be given a compli
mentary vote here and in Linn
county. He is an estimabie
gentleman, and possesses marked
ability. For years be has lived
in this vicinity. He is a gradu
ate of the State. Agricultural col
lege, and is now president of the
board of regents of that institu
tion. In his speech at the court
houseiat the close of the cam
paign, he assured republicans
that he was for retention of the
Philippine Islands until a perma
nent government was established,
and if, when this had been ac
complished, the people of the
United States shall declare bv
their ballots in favor of perma
nently holding that territory, he
will cheerfully acquiescr.
But the people were for Mr
Tongrue and nothing: could win
them from him.
The 'initiative and referen
dum" amendment to the state
constitution carried by an over
whelming majority in Eenton
county, as it probably did in the
state. It now remains to be seen
what use will be made of this
opportunity to "make or break"
legislation by those who voted
for the amendment.
The new legislature, leaving
out the senator from Linn county
where Kelly and Miller are tied,
will be 72 republicans to 17 dem
ocrats on joint ballot. In the
senate are 24 republicans and
five democrats, and in the house
48 republicans and 12 democrats
The election of Geo. H. Wil
liams to be mayor of Portland is
gratifying to people generally
throughout the state. Me is
Oregon's "grand old man," and
a keen interest was taken in his
contest with Mr. Inman.
The prohibition vote for Hi
ram Gould for congress from this
district was 103 in Benton coun
ty. In 1896 that party polled 23
votes; in the spring of iqoo, 98;
and for Wooley for president the
same year, 81.
The socialist vote in this coun
ty for supreme judge,- an office
conceeded to bring out the full
party strength, was 130.

Brain-Food Nonsense.
Another ridiculous food fat has been
i branded by the most competent authori
ties. They have dispelled the silly
notion that one kind of focd is needed
for brain, another for muscles, and still
another for bones. A correct diet will
not only nourish a particular part of the
body, but it will sustain every otherpart.
Yet, however good your food may te,
its nutriment is destroyed by indigestion
or dyspepsia. You must prepare for
their appearance or prevent their coming
by taking regular doses of Green's
KAugnst Flower, the favorite medicine of
the healthy millions. A few doses aids
digestion, stimulates the liver to healthy
action, purifies the blood, and makes
you feel buoyant and vigorous. You
